UHD Blu-rays

4k Movies: 123
4k TV Shows: 0
4k Videos: 1
Bit rate: 108-128 mbps

UHD Blu-rays were released at the beginning of 2016. Where streaming 4k content has limitations based on bit rate, connection speed, and bandwidth caps, you just need to grab a UHD Blu-ray and pop it into a UHD Blu-ray player to start enjoying higher-resolution content.

They are only playable with UHD Blu-ray players, which use lasers of a different wavelength than regular Blu-ray players. You also need a TV that complies with HDCP 2.2 to watch UHD Blu-rays in UHD; watching UHD Blu-rays on a TV that doesn't will result in the movies being played in 1080p.

Sample of available titles:

Movies

  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  • Life of Pi
  • Kingsman
  • Pan

  • Sicario
  • Maze Runner
  • Wild
  • Fantastic Four
  • The Peanuts Movie

  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Expendables 3
  • Ender's Game
  • Exodus
  • Hancock

The full list can be found here.

Streaming/Subscription Options

Like any other stream, these options use your internet connection to deliver content to you. 4k streams will require much more bandwidth than regular HD, so make sure you have both a good enough connection speed and a high enough bandwidth cap to stream 4k content.

Note: In an effort to keep bandwidth costs down, the bit rates for 4k streaming content are low – 1080p Blu-rays have higher bit rates. This means that while the resolution is there, the streams have less information, and so they are not very high quality.

YouTube (Free)

4k Movies: 0
4k TV Shows: 0
4k Videos: Thousands
Bit rate: 16 mbps

It's all videos uploaded by regular users, but by sheer amount of 4k content, nothing has YouTube beat for now. If you're looking for a way to test out a new 4k TV's capabilities, this is a great place to start.

Youtube also recently added HDR, it's available on Chromecast Ultra and select Samsung HDR TVs

Here are a few 4k videos to get you started.

Here are some HDR Channels and videos to test out that functionality.

Pricing is a little steep - you can expect to pay about $30 to purchase a movie in UHD (around the same as a UHD Blu-ray), and around $10 to rent - but is more or less in line with the other UHD VOD services. It also ties in with Ultraviolet.

Sample of available titles:

Operating alongside the Sony Pictures Store, movies are available for purchase through the service for around $30 - about the cost of a UHD Blu-ray. Currently, only Sony titles are available. This option is a little steep compared to some of the other options out there, but if you have a Sony UHD TV and want to own digital copies of the UHD and HDR movies you watch, this could be a good fit for you.

You are also able to access your Ultraviolet titles through Ultra, and repurchase 1080p content you have through the Sony Pictures Store at a discount.

Sample of available titles:

  • The Walk (HDR)

  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (HDR)

If you buy a 4K smart Blu-ray player, will the upscaling be better, since the Blu-ray player is doing it? So TVs like the P series, which have soft upscaling, might look better?
It will depend on the player. Some might be better at upscaling, some might be worse.

I bought 3 of the Samsung UHD video pack SHP-ZA10K, can I use these to download more 4k videos to? I'm using one of the drives to watch videos that came with it on my new Samsung 8500.
Yes, via M-Go.

In response to the Direct TV option: The HDMI cable does not matter, as no 4k content comes from the HDMI. The 4K content comes from the hard drive, over the network and to the built-in RVU on 2014 and 2015 Samsung TVs. The RVU does require something like $5 - $10 a month subscription, as the RVU is seen as another DirecTV box/TV. No subscription just for 4K itself.
Thanks for writing in with that info!

I see some of the videos available as 4k content and wonder how remastered "vintage" video would compare to the viewer hardware's upscaled video. For example, movies like Top Gun, Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump are listed as available in 4k. Really? Is it analogue film redigitized at 4k? Some fancy remastering? Or is it simply "pre-upscaled" like a 4k TV would do?
That's a great question. According to Sony's website, it would appear that some studios are working to create genuine remasters, transferring older movies from film to 4k digital files.
That doesn't mean this is true for all 4k content - some might just be pre-upscaled. On the whole, it's likely that either of those possibilities would be better (or at least equal to) good hardware upscaling.
Keep in mind that the platform on which you watch 4k video will also play a part in determining quality. Because of low bit-rates (video information), 4k streams from Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube are considered by many to be worse than 1080p Blu-ray, but UHD Blu-ray will be much higher-quality, with a much higher bit-rate.

Will this info be applicable on the Roku 4 when it comes out?
Yes, it should be accurate for any of the apps available on Roku 4.

Hi, do I need special hdmi 2.0 cable to get 4k content from DirecTV? I have the appropriate Genie HR-44 but wondering if 4k content is by subscription only, from DirecTV, or can I just go to "Genie Recommends" as DirecTV website advises. But do I need 4k hdmi cable or not? Thank you.
With a DirecTV subscription you can rent 4k movies individually. No need for special cables to watch DirecTV 4k content. A cable like this one will be good but if you already have an hdmi cable, good chances are that it will already work perfectly. Just turn on the 'Genie Recommends' feature to access available 4k movies for rent.

I cannot find a list of UHD movies on new format discs for UHD Players?
There is a list of UHD movies available here.
