Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately no luck. AppleTV 4k recognized the S551F as 4k HDR10+/DV compatible, but the FireTV OS crashed persistently. This was with a HDMI 2.1 cable and enabling 2.0 speeds on the TV. A massive flaw, as this TV is advertised as capable of HDR10+ and DV. Have returned and switched to a Hisense U7. Wow. Google TV OS is light years better, and the Hisense just looks better. If you’re considering buying this TV for a dorm room, it’s a good deal, but if you’d like to utilize those features like HDR10+ / DV, this is not the one.
I am extremely unsatisfied with the FireTV OS as well, in all regards.
I will not use it for anything.
Can you explain how to do this? S551F, and anytime I try to play HDR or Dolby Vision content via AppleTV, it seems the FireTV OS just crashes. I imagine being locked to HDMI 1.4 would explain it, but I see no options regarding changing this.
On the FireTV version, while on the desired input:
Press the “Gear” button on remote (top right below power button)
Select “Picture” option.
Scroll to the very bottom and select “Advanced Settings”
Scroll to the very bottom and select “HDMI Input Mode”
Change setting to “Mode 2 (2.0)”
I turned Game Master on but I can’t seem to change the fps at 1080p/1440p to 120hz on my PC. VRR is on in Windows and GPU drivers, VSync is off, and the Game Master overlay has HDR, ALLM, and VRR on, but FPS is always capped at 60 regardless of resolution.
No issues with text at all though
I was able to do it by creating a new resolution mode for the monitor, but the results were extremely unsatisfying.
For anyone trying to use this screen as a monitor, it will not output 4:4:4 chroma @60hz by default in PC mode, it is locked in 30hz 4:4:4 chroma or 60hz 4:2:0 chroma due to limiting itself to HDMI 1.4 under its auto-detection.
You need to go into the settings and change the HDMI mode manually to HDMI 2.0. This is true for the S551F (FireTV), S551G (AndroidTV), and S555 (Roku) versions of this set.
This may only be an issue with Nvidia GPUs but not confirmed.
@rtings please update the inputs and PC Monitor section to reflect this necessity.
I’m having and issue with PC Mode that’s different from having bgr subpixel, lines going through text, etc. I am getting some extreme over sharpening when ever I use a PC over hdmi. I’ve tried different PCs, different cables, I can’t find any sharpness settings in the menu when in PC Mode. I have an older TCL 55r625 and it does not have this over sharpening problem. I also have Samsung TV and a computer monitor, and none them exhibit this problem. Is this user error or is there no way adjust sharpness while in PC mode with HDMI input? Thanks in advance if anyone kindly responds! i have the 43 inch model 43Q651G.
I think I have the same issue as you above. Its definitely this screen. Comparing it back to back same source as a S551 its extremely apparent, I’ve tried everything to solve it and there’s nothing I could do. Blacks sections surrounded by browns in the source easily decipherable on other screens show up as just black blotches on this Q651.
Definitely a terrible screen to use as a monitor, I highly recommend sending it back and grabbing the S551.
Purchased to use as a monitor, text is light blue striped through and cant be fully solved with Cleartype. Which is annoying enough but thats not the worst of it.
The worst part is the screen has this weird granularity/dithering/contrast issue with colors and busy/textured scenes. Comparing the Win10 high resolution spotlight mountain photo(normalized with the same file) in Chile side by side with a TCL 43S551 (a supposedly low tier screen) the difference is stark. Even after two calibrations I cant get the colors or contrast right or the hillsides to not look almost artifacted and weirdly blown out, browns showing up as black. There is also a bit of a flicker to it that doesn’t exist on the S551. Its appearent in the above scenes but especially so if you look at lines of light colored text on a dark background, the text around where you’re looking ‘dances’ around. There’s some sort of subpixel judder or low hz backlight flickering that you cant get rid of.
It’s almost like there’s some sort of processing going on but the picture settings are extremely limited in the menus, especially in Game or PC mode. Tried different HDMI cables, swapped sources between the sets. I’ve been round and round with settings to no avail with this thing and will be returning it for the S551.
I bought this set with high hopes and really wanted it to be good, because it looked so good on paper for the money, but the 43S551 is a MUCH better monitor by a long shot, for less money. Long term use of this set as a monitor would cause serious eye strain. It’s high rating as a PC monitor on Rtings needs to be reevaluated.
I have comparative photos between the two screens but cant post here.

@rtings Have you guys tried gaming on this TV?

Just trust me, skip the Q651 and get the S551.
