The Vitamix Alta Pro is a full-size blender. This Costco-exclusive model sits just below Vitamix's premium Ascent series in terms of features. Its design is very similar to the Vitamix Ascent X2, with a 2-part lid, tamper, and removable tamper holder, but it comes with a 64-ounce jar instead of the 48-ounce jars that come with the Ascent X-series models. It's not compatible with Self-Detect jars that automatically adjust the blade speed based on the jar's size and shape.
Our Verdict
The Vitamix Alta Pro is an excellent multi-purpose blender. It truly shines when blending full batches because of its large jar. Whether you're making smoothies for the whole family or meal prepping puréed soups, it produces remarkably smooth results. It's impressive for both hot and cold applications, whether quickly processing ice cubes into snow-like crushed or heating and blending soups directly in the jar to save you time and cleanup. This blender handles thick blends like nut butter or hummus, but the wide jar spreads ingredients to the sides, requiring frequent scraping and tampering. Cleaning requires some attention, too. The lid and tamper holder are particularly tricky to clean thoroughly, especially after using sticky ingredients like nut butter.
Blends large batches of fibrous ingredients smoothly.

Can hot blend.
Large 64-ounce jar capacity.
Difficult to process small batches of fibrous ingredients.
Making nut butter is laborious.
The Vitamix Alta Pro can make excellent single-serve smoothies, but the 64-ounce jar really isn't designed for it. Ingredients shoot up the sides instead of circulating near the blades, so you'll need to stop several times to scrape everything back down. While the final result is smooth with no visible bits, you end up working harder than you should have to for a single serving. The larger lid collects more residue during blending, making clean-up trickier.

The Vitamix Alta Pro is outstanding for making large batches of smoothies. If you hit the automatic smoothie preset, you'll have silky-smooth results with no visible bits of leafy greens in under a minute. Whether you're batch-prepping smoothies for the week or making breakfast for the family, this blender handles it effortlessly. Cleanup is straightforward with the self-cleaning program, though if residue gets into the lid or tamper holder, it can be tricky to clean thoroughly.

The Vitamix Alta Pro is fantastic for crushing ice. The 64-ounce jar makes quick work of ice cubes, producing perfect snow-like crushed ice or smooth frozen drinks. You can fit a dozen cubes at once and crush them in under a minute with just a few pulses. There's no dedicated ice crushing program, but the pulse function works extremely well.

The Vitamix Alta Pro is incredible for making soups. The hot blending feature creates enough friction to heat ingredients while blending them into a silky-smooth purée without having to transfer them into a pot. The 64-ounce capacity handles family-sized portions or weekly meal prep in one go. The automatic Hot Soup program takes care of the timing for you, delivering excellent results whether you're making butternut squash soup or creamy tomato bisque. The downside is that the lid and tamper holder can collect residue that's tricky to clean.

The Vitamix Alta Pro is excellent for professional use. The 64-ounce jar and the 1440W motor handle demanding tasks like making back-to-back smoothies, frozen cocktails, or daily soup specials. However, there are some drawbacks for professional settings. If you're making thick blends like nut butters, hummus, or other dense spreads, this blender requires you to scrape down the sides and use the tamper a lot. Cleaning between uses can also be time-consuming, so it isn't ideal to use during a lunch or dinner rush. This is particularly true of the tamper holder, which collects residue that's difficult to remove completely.

Popular Blender Comparisons
The Vitamix Alta Pro is a high-end full-size blender that's a Costco-exclusive alternative to Vitamix's Ascent series. It has a design that's almost identical to the Vitamix Ascent X2, with similar controls and layout. However, it comes with a larger 64-ounce jar instead of the X2's 48-ounce jar. Unlike the Ascent series blenders, it doesn't have the Self-Detect feature, which means it can't automatically adjust settings based on the jar type. However, this makes the Alta Pro compatible with a wider range of Vitamix jars, including ones that aren't Self-Detect compatible. The build quality is good, though the plastic motor base feels slightly cheaper than the Vitamix Ascent X2. It also produces more noise than other models in the Ascent line, especially compared with the Vitamix Ascent X5.
The Alta Pro is best suited for users who want top-of-the-line Vitamix performance but don't need smart features. If you regularly blend large batches for meal prep or entertaining, the 64-ounce jar is a major advantage. The minor build quality compromises and the lack of Self-Detect aren't dealbreakers for most users, especially considering the broader jar compatibility. However, if you frequently make single-serve smoothies, a model that comes with a personal-sized jar like the Breville the Super Q BBL920 would be a better pick.

The Vitamix Alta Pro and the Vitamix 5200 are closely matched blenders with distinct trade-offs. They both have 64-ounce jars, but the 5200's narrower design keeps ingredients closer to the blades, making it the better choice if you often make small batches and thick spreads. The Alta Pro offers three automatic blending programs, which is convenient if you like preset options, while the 5200 keeps it simple with just a speed dial. The 5200 also has a much longer power cord with storage underneath the base, and it's easier to clean overall, though it's not dishwasher-safe. Choose the 5200 if you value simplicity and often blend smaller amounts, or opt for the Alta Pro if you prefer automated presets.
The Vitamix Alta Pro and the Vitamix Venturist Pro offer similar performance, but their features cater to different needs. If you like using presets and don't want to use an app, opt for the Alta Pro. Alta Pro users can simply turn a dial on the front panel to choose an automatic blending program, whereas the Venturist Pro requires you to use an app to do so. Otherwise, both blenders come with a similar 64-ounce jar design that's great for making large batches, but struggles when processing small batches of ingredients.
The Vitamix Alta Pro and the Vitamix Ascent X2 are similar high-end blenders that have different strengths depending on your needs. If you make smoothies or soups for the whole family or meal prep in large batches, the Alta Pro is the better choice because of its larger 64-ounce jar. However, if you often blend single-serving smoothies or make nut butter, the X2's narrower, 48-ounce jar keeps ingredients closer to the blades so you don't have to scrape down the sides. Finally, the X2 also has slightly better build quality and runs quieter.
The Vitamix Propel 750 and the Vitamix Alta Pro are both high-end blenders with wide 64-ounce jars. The 750 is the better option if you frequently blend small batches. Despite the jar designs being similar, it blends small servings and nut butter more easily than the Alta Pro. The 750 offers more automatic programs, letting you blend spreads and frozen desserts with ease. If you’re sensitive to noise, however, opt for the Alta Pro, which is quieter.
Test Results
The Vitamix Alta Pro is a large, full-sized blender with dimensions similar to those of the models in the Vitamix Ascent series. With the tamper holder installed, the width is 10.6".
The Vitamix Alta Pro feels very well-built. The motor base is mostly plastic with a black, glossy finish that doesn't show fingerprints easily. While its construction appears almost identical to the Vitamix Ascent X2, the base feels slightly cheaper in comparison. It's noticeably lighter and feels less solid overall. That said, this is still a premium-feeling blender, and the differences are really only apparent relative to other Vitamix models.
The classic Vitamix dial and switch design provides good tactile feedback. The dial has a textured surface for grip and a silver accent ring, and the switches feel sturdy and responsive. You can easily remove the speed dial and centering pad for cleaning. Unfortunately, there's no cord storage underneath the blender, making it less convenient to keep cords tucked away. On the positive side, the rubber handle cover stays in place securely, fixing an issue from earlier Ascent series jars where it would slip off.
One thing to note is that the Alta Pro comes with a 10-year limited warranty, whereas some other models come with a comprehensive full warranty.
You can see a comparison of the Alta Pro with the Vitamix Ascent X2, the Vitamix Ascent X3, the Vitamix Ascent X4, and the Vitamix Ascent X5 side by side in this photo.
This blender comes with a larger and wider 64-ounce jar than its Ascent series siblings, which have 48-ounce jars. However, its wider base makes it less efficient at blending small batches compared to narrower jars.
You can easily remove the center lid plug by turning it, letting you add ingredients or use the tamper while the blender is running. The lid plug holds 1.6-ounce (50 ml) of water, but it lacks measurement lines, so you can't use it to measure liquids precisely.
The powder cord is long enough to reach a kitchen outlet, but it's shorter than the cords found on older models like the Vitamix 5200. There isn't any cord storage under the unit, so there's no convenient place to wrap up the cord when storing the blender.
The Vitamix Alta Pro is excellent for processing small batches of fibrous ingredients, but it takes some effort. The result is very smooth, with no visible kale bits and a texture that isn't too airy. But the blending process takes over two minutes and requires multiple rounds of stopping and scraping. Because of the jar's wider base, small batches shoot up the sides instead of staying near the blades, so you'll need to scrape down both the walls of the jar and the lid several times. The tamper isn't particularly helpful for this task since the ingredients splash up rather than getting stuck. If you often make single-serve smoothies, a blender with a narrower jar or a personal jar attachment would be more convenient.
This blender is outstanding for processing large quantities of fibrous ingredients. The wider jar works much better at full capacity because ingredients circulate properly and stay near the blades rather than splashing up the sides. Using just one cycle of the smoothie preset produces very smooth results with no visible kale bits in under a minute.
This blender does an exceptional job of crushing ice. While there's no dedicated ice crushing program, the process is very easy and produces consistent results. The Alta Pro's large and wide 64-ounce jar easily fits 12 ice cubes, and just a few pulses produce snow-like crushed ice in less than a minute. Smaller Ascent series models like the Vitamix Ascent X2 require you to start at mid speed and ramp up to stop cubes from getting stuck under the blades.
This blender produces outstanding nut butter that's smooth and oily with only tiny grains, although the process is quite a poor experience. It takes significantly longer than other Vitamix blenders and requires a lot of scraping and tamper usage. You'll need to use lower to medium-high speeds as the 64-ounce jar's wide base causes nuts to spread out to the sides instead of funneling them toward the blades like on Ascent series models' narrower 48-ounce jars. Making a larger batch can help force ingredients toward the center.
The Vitamix Alta Pro's noise levels are decent. Its lighter base and use of cheaper-feeling plastics produce a more hollow sound profile than its siblings in the Ascent series, resulting in louder operation overall. If you're looking for a quieter model, the Vitamix Ascent X5 would be a better pick.
This blender has a wide range of speed settings. Unlike the Ascent series models, it lacks the Self-Detect feature, so it doesn't automatically adjust speed based on the jar being used. However, the Vitamix Alta Pro is compatible with a wider range of Vitamix jars. Blenders with Self-Detect can only be used with Self-Detect jars, which limits your options if you already own older Vitamix jars that you'd like to use.
The front panel features a pulse switch, a power switch, and a central speed dial. The stepless speed dial features numbers from 1 to 10 and lets you adjust speed smoothly. There’s tactile feedback when you switch between the automatic programs. It includes a basic LED display that shows the timer, which is useful for tracking how long you've been blending or seeing how much time is left on your blending program. There's also an on/off switch at the back of the motor base.
It has three automatic blending programs that run through preset speed patterns optimized for each task. The hot blending capability means the Hot Soup program can heat ingredients while blending.
- Self Cleaning: 35 seconds
- Smoothies: 50 seconds
- Hot Soup: 5 minutes 45 seconds
Cleaning this blender is an okay experience. Running a self-cleaning cycle with soap and water helps remove most residue, but you'll still need to manually clean some areas.
Like the Ascent models, the tamper holder is particularly tricky to clean thoroughly. Sticky ingredients like nut butter get lodged inside, and it's very difficult to remove all the residue, even with a brush or sponge. The lid is also larger and deeper than those on Ascent blenders, so it collects more residue. This makes cleaning it more tedious, though not necessarily harder; you'll just need to wipe and rinse it more.
