Love listening to music on the go? A small Bluetooth speaker may be the right choice for you. We already have a list of the best portable Bluetooth speakers we've tested, which includes some heartier, heftier models, many of which come with built-in handles for easier transport. However, this list focuses on smaller and more compact models, including some of the best mini speakers on the market. With a portable design, some of these speakers easily slide into your pocket or handbag to listen wherever you go; some even weigh less than a pound. Even with wired designs, a smaller footprint can save you valuable counter space in areas like the kitchen, which can get cluttered easily. Plus, they tend to be more wallet-friendly than larger picks on the market, and with improving technologies, you can still get a great sound for a bargain price.

We've tested over 180 speakers, and below, you'll find our recommendations for the best small speakers with Bluetooth. If you're interested, check out our recommendations for the best-sounding Bluetooth speakers and the best waterproof Bluetooth speakers.

  1. Best Small Bluetooth Speaker

Early Black Friday Deal: The Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4 has dropped in price by $40 at Amazon.com.
    SEE DEAL

The best small Bluetooth speaker we've tested is the Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4. It's a little larger than some of the other speakers on this list, but it's still small enough to toss in a purse, and we think the slightly larger size is worth the benefits this speaker brings. To begin with, it offers good sound, with a balanced frequency response in the mid-range that ensures voices and instruments sound detailed and accurate. It supports stereo playback, and its 360-degree design means your audio sounds similar regardless of your listening angle, so you can place this speaker wherever is most convenient without worrying too much about sound quality.

This speaker also boasts a superb build quality: it's rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, and even floats in water, so it'll withstand a drop in the pool or a shower in the rain. It's also built to withstand impacts, so even a drop on a harder surface shouldn't damage it too much. It features a built-in hook and is available in various colors and styles, lasting over 13 hours on a single charge, which should get you through a full day at the park. If it's still just a touch too large for you, check out our picks further down the page.

  2. Best Budget Small Bluetooth Speaker

If you're shopping on a budget, or the Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4 is a little bigger than what you're looking for, check out the Sony SRS-XB100. It's the best mini Bluetooth speaker in the budget range we've tested. Like the Ultimate Ears, it also features a 360-degree design, allowing you to place it in the center of a table and ensure everyone hears high-quality sound. However, unlike the Ultimate Ears, it downmixes stereo content to mono, which is fairly standard in the world of small speakers. The Sony has a fairly flat sound profile from the mids up through the treble, but there's a hefty boost in the high-bass range, which you'll either love or hate. It can make voices sound a bit muddy, but it also adds warmth to basslines, which is nice since tiny speakers like this are somewhat bass-shy. Fans of EDM looking for a small speaker might find this sound perfect for their needs.

This speaker even has a mic, so you can use your phone's voice assistant with it, although you'll want to be pretty close to the speaker for the mic to hear you clearly. Fortunately, this speaker is lightweight enough to carry in one hand, and its detachable strap makes it easy to clip onto a bag or backpack, so you never need to be far away from it. Plus, since it's rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, it can withstand some exposure to the elements when you bring it outside. This speaker is the next generation of the Sony SRS-XB13, and it comes with a big improvement in battery life. You can now listen to your favorite tracks for well over 20 hours without interruption.

  3. Best Cheap Small Bluetooth Speaker

If every penny counts, then the Anker Soundcore Select 4 Go is the place to look. You can find it on sale for as low as $20, making this one of the best bargains in the Bluetooth speaker world. Like the others on our list, the Anker has a small and compact build, making it great for listening on the go. It also comes in various colors to match your style, and the built-in hook lets you attach it to a bag or backpack. It's even rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, which is great for the price. But its 10-hour battery life is only half that of the Sony SRS-XB100, and there's no microphone, so you can't use it with a voice assistant. But if you don't need those features, the Anker offers excellent value.

Out of the box, it boasts a well-balanced sound that reproduces both dialogue and instruments accurately and with plenty of clarity. Of course, being a small speaker, you don't get floor-shaking bass out of it, but there's enough high-bass present to keep the basslines in your favorite disco tunes audible. The most commonly used controls are present on the speaker's control strip, including volume and play/pause buttons. It even comes with a companion app to let you customize the speaker's sound, which is a real bonus for a speaker of this size, and not something the more expensive picks on this l

  4. Best Small Smart Bluetooth Speaker

Early Black Friday Deal: The Sonos Roam 2 has dropped in price by $40 at Amazon.com.
    SEE DEAL

As far as small smart speakers go, the Sonos Roam 2 is the best we've tested. This smart Bluetooth speaker boasts a portable design with many cool features to make the most of your listening experience on the go. As with many of the manufacturer's top-of-the-line models, you can connect the speaker to other Sonos devices to spread audio throughout your home or backyard. The TruePlay room correction feature automatically adjusts the speaker's output based on your room's unique acoustics. Thanks to built-in Alexa and Sonos Assistant support, you can enjoy hands-free control right from the comfort of your couch.

This speaker features a few upgrades from the previous iteration, the Sonos Roam/Roam SL. The controls have been expanded, so there's now a dedicated Bluetooth button, and Sonos Assistant support has been added, which helps this speaker integrate seamlessly into an existing Sonos ecosystem. All models are rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, so they're protected against some light exposure to the elements. The manufacturer says they're drop-resistant. Weighing in at less than a pound, this feature-packed speaker is lightweight and easy to carry, and it's a great way to enjoy your favorite tunes wherever you go.

  5. Best Cheap Smart Speaker For Home

Early Black Friday Deal: The Amazon Echo Pop is on sale for 45% at Amazon.com.
    SEE DEAL

While most of our picks have focused on portable, wireless designs, there are definitely some advantages to having a wired home speaker. Home speakers, like the Amazon Echo Pop, usually come with nifty features like Alexa voice assistant support and Wi-Fi capabilities to help them integrate with the other devices in your home ecosystem. Since there's no battery, this speaker can also offer smart voice assistant capabilities for a bargain price. And there's no need to worry about it taking up more space than our other picks, either. Despite its wired design, the Amazon has a very small footprint that makes it a great choice for parts of your house that can easily get cluttered, like the kitchen.

Since it's quite a bit smaller than the Sonos Roam 2, it can't offer as much mid-bass output, but there's enough high-bass to ensure you can at least hear the basslines in your favourite Daft Punk tunes, even if you can't feel them. Plus, the Amazon has a balanced mid-range that's well-suited to music and podcasts. Unlike the Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4, the Amazon's semi-spherical design means that it doesn't have the best directivity, so you'll want to position it facing you. It's not particularly loud, either, and it's obviously limited to Amazon's Alexa. If you prefer to use Google Assistant for all your voice assistant needs, it's worth considering the Google Nest Mini. Its pebble-shaped design offers better directivity, and it has more intuitive controls. On the other hand, it's even quieter than the Amazon speaker, and its mic struggles to pick up your voice in noisier environments.

Notable Mentions

  • Bose SoundLink Micro:

The Bose SoundLink Micro is another small Bluetooth speaker with a great build quality that's ideal for listening to music on the go, especially if you love a signature Bose sound. But it downmixes your audio to mono, unlike the Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4.

  • JBL Clip 5: As its name implies, the JBL Clip 5 is a small Bluetooth speaker with a built-in carabiner hook to attach to your bag. Some may prefer this design over the fabric hooks common with our top picks, though this speaker's battery life isn't quite as impressive as similarly priced picks like the Sony SRS-XB100. However, it comes with useful features like Bluetooth multi-device pairing and an EQ and presets in the app. See our review
  • Tribit Stormbox Micro 2:

The Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 is an interesting alternative to a couple of speakers on this list. In terms of overall size, the Tribit resembles the Sony SRS-XB100, but is more expensive. That said, the Tribit has a special trick up its sleeve: the ability to act as a battery pack, which might be handy if you need to charge your phone while out and about.

  • Minirig 4:

The Minirig 4 is a very small speaker. It's about the size of the Sony SRS-XB100 but manages to get extremely loud for its small size, reaching up to 94dB at its maximum volume. However, it's much more expensive than the Sony, and its battery lasts half as long. Still, if you need a big volume in a tiny package, this is a great place to start your search.

  • JBL Go 4:

The JBL Go 4 is a positively tiny Bluetooth speaker that's a good alternative to the Anker Soundcore Select 4 Go for anyone looking for a jacket-pocket-friendly Bluetooth speaker. The JBL is two-thirds the volume of the Anker and puts out a similarly balanced sound. Of course, its tiny size brings compromises, like a shorter battery life and more compression at high volumes than the Anker.

Our recommendations above are what we think are currently the best Bluetooth speakers for portability. We factor in the price (cheaper speakers win over pricier ones if the difference isn't worth it), feedback from our visitors, and availability (no speakers that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).
