If you ever find yourself fighting for toaster space in the morning, it may be time to upgrade to a 4-slice model. These higher-capacity toasters can be a great help if everyone in your house eats toast in the morning or if you like to host brunch and stacks of fresh toast are on the menu. The best toasters produce consistently toasted bread, regardless of the spot you're using and the number of batches you make in a row. They should also offer a variety of settings that produce different results, so you can get the results you want with your choice of bread (or bagel).

We've tested 20 toasters; these are our recommendations for the best four-slice toasters for most people. If you're looking for another type of toaster, check out our recommendations for the overall best toasters. If you could use even more capacity than these 4-slice toasters can offer, you might be interested in a toaster oven instead.

How We Test Toasters
How We Test Toasters

We've put our 20 toasters through the wringer to help you make a confident buying decision. But how do we do it? It starts with buying the products ourselves, just like you. We take it a step further with our lab, where we measure a variety of characteristics, like toasting evenness, so that a prospective toaster's performance doesn't come as a shock. You can even compare models and results, making it easy to find the right toaster for your needs.

  1. Best 4-Slice Toaster

The best 4-slice toaster we've tested is the Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster. While you can get a similar or better toasting performance with a cheaper option below, its design and extra features make it worth considering if you're in the market for a higher-end model. It has four slots that are slightly wider, deeper, and longer than many toasters, including the cheaper picks below. They easily fit bagels, thickly sliced bread, and taller slices. Its aluminum body gives it a premium look and sturdy feel, and it has an incredible toasting range, so you can get golden-brown results in one cycle with sandwich bread as well as denser items.

Its cycle countdown indicators let you know when your toast will be ready. You can use 'Lift and Look' to lift the slots and check on your toast without interrupting the toasting cycle, and the 'A Bit More' button to add some time to the end of a cycle. It has buttons to lift and raise the slots instead of levers. However, while it toasts bread decently evenly, some slots produce somewhat darker toast than others.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range 4-Slice Toaster

If your household likes to throw long slices of bread into the breakfast rotation, consider the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster. This upper-mid range model is the long-slot version of the Breville Die-Cast 4-Slice Smart Toaster, so it takes up more counter and storage space than our top pick. That said, you get all the same features with both of these models, including presets for bagels and frozen items, a cancel cycle button, as well as 'Lift and Look' and 'A Bit More' functions.

It doesn't brown bread quite as evenly as the 4-slot version, and you may notice that one side of the bread gets toasted a little more. You may also need to adjust the shade setting if you're making multiple batches, since it's not the most consistent batch after batch. That said, it offers an outstanding toasting range, as its five shade settings can make anything from barely done to charred toast. You can also use the slider control to make smaller adjustments.

  3. Best Mid-Range 4-Slice Toaster

If you don't care much about higher-end features like cycle countdown indicators, you can spend much less without sacrificing performance. In the mid-range, the Black+Decker 4-Slice Toaster TR4900SSD is the best 4-slice toaster we've tested. It has no presets aside from standard ones for bagels and frozen items like waffles. However, it toasts much more evenly than the previous picks, producing similar results in each slot and on both sides of the bread, and also performs much more consistently batch after batch.

It has a fantastic toasting range, so you can use the presets to produce anything from lightly toasted to charred sandwich bread in a single cycle, and you won't have to run an extra cycle to toast denser breads properly. The dials let you make small adjustments to the shade setting, so you're not limited to the seven marked settings.

  4. Best Budget 4-Slice Toaster

If you want something that looks nice for a budget-friendly price, you might prefer the Beautiful 4-Slice Toaster with Touch-Activated Display. This budget-friendly model from Drew Barrymore's kitchenware brand 'Beautiful by Drew' is sold by the brand at Walmart and can be either around the same price or cheaper than the Black+Decker 4-Slice Toaster TR4900SSD, depending on where you find that model. It has a more minimalist look, with controls that light up only when the toaster is on, and it comes in several pastel colors, instead of the usual stainless or black plastic options. Unlike many cheaper toasters, it also includes cycle countdown indicators.

Like the previous pick, it does a fantastic job of evenly toasting bread and produces impressively consistent results batch after batch. However, it has a much smaller toasting range. There are only seven shade settings, which tend to either over-toast or under-toast plain white sandwich bread. However, if you usually eat denser homemade or bakery breads, or anything else that takes a little longer to toast, like bagels, you can use one of the higher settings to get golden-brown results in one cycle.

  5. Best Cheap 4-Slice Toaster

The best cheap 4-slice toaster we've tested is the Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster. This toaster is only slightly cheaper than the Beautiful 4-Slice Toaster with Touch-Activated Display, but you might prefer the lighter, smaller design if you plan to store your toaster in a cupboard after breakfast. Its slots are also shallower when lifted, which makes it easier to grab small items like English muffins or frozen waffles.

It does a good job of evenly toasting bread and has dials that let you make small adjustments to the shade setting. However, you might need to run a couple of cycles to properly toast denser breads, especially if the toaster isn't already warm. On the other hand, you'll need to adjust the shade setting for consistent results if you're making several batches.
