The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a cordless handheld vacuum designed for spot cleaning. It comes with a turbo brush upholstery tool that features a self-cleaning brushroll to help tackle hair wraps while you clean, as well as a crevice tool and a hard-bristled brush. This bagless vacuum uses a small cyclone filter, though it's not HEPA rated.

There are multiple variants of this vacuum, each with different accessories and power levels. See the Differences Between Variants section for more details.

Our Verdict

5.6
House

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ isn't designed for cleaning a large house on its own. It's only suitable for spot cleaning due to its low runtime and small suction area. If you restrict its use to this limited purpose, this vacuum works great on both hard floors and carpets, regardless of debris size. However, pet hair pickup is mediocre since the turbo brush's agitation isn't high enough to remove fine hair embedded into carpet and upholstery. The worst aspect of this vacuum is that it leads to poor air quality, as its cyclone filter fails to retain dust and instead blows it out into the room. Additionally, emptying the dirt compartment distributes even more dust.

Pros
  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
Cons
  • Not suitable as a primary vacuum in a home.

  • Short runtime.

  • Turbo brush struggles with pet hair on carpet and fabric.
  • Ineffective filtration results in poor air quality.

  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust, which settles back down onto surfaces.

5.5
Small Apartment

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ isn't designed for cleaning an entire apartment. For spot cleaning, it offers excellent mobility for reaching messes, as well as impressive bare floor pickup. Carpet pickup is very effective, thanks to the large turbo brush opening, which captures medium and large debris. When you're done cleaning, it's small enough to store anywhere, though it doesn't come with any tool storage or wall mount. Pet hair pickup is only passable, with most fine hairs left behind owing to weak agitation. You'll have to work quickly to clean due to the poor runtime, but you may be more concerned with the negative impact on air quality, given its terrible filter and messy emptying.

Pros
  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
  • Small and easy to store.

Cons
  • Not suitable as a primary vacuum in an apartment.

  • Short runtime.

  • Turbo brush struggles with pet hair on carpet and fabric.
  • Ineffective filtration results in poor air quality.

  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust, which settles back down onto surfaces.

8.1
Stairs

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is great for stairs. This extremely lightweight, handheld vacuum offers impressive hard floor pickup and very good carpet pickup. Its cordless design also ensures a virtually unlimited range, as long as it has sufficient battery life and room left in its dirt compartment. However, you'll find that it doesn't perform as well on pet hair, as it leaves most embedded hair behind due to the poor agitation of the turbo brush. It also has an awful filter, which blows dust out into the air and back onto your stairs.

Pros
  • Lightweight.

  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
  • Cordless design so you don't need to be near an outlet.

Cons
  • Turbo brush struggles with pet hair on carpet and fabric.
  • Ineffective filtration results in poor air quality.

8.1
Cars

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is great for cars. This highly portable handheld does a good job of cleaning low-pile carpet due to its high suction and comes with a couple of tools and brushes to help you clean. Since it's cordless, you don't have to worry about finding a power outlet and can clean until the battery is depleted or the dirt compartment is full. It's fairly well built, decently easy to maintain, and won't take up much space at all when you're done and need to store it away. Unfortunately, its turbo brush is largely ineffective on pet hair (if you have pets in the car).

Pros
  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
  • Cordless design so you don't need to be near an outlet.

Cons
  • Turbo brush struggles with pet hair on carpet and fabric.
8.1
Bare Floor Pickup

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is decent for bare floors. It can pick up a mix of debris types on this surface when fitted with its turbo brush tool without a problem, as long as you keep the vacuum at a shallow angle. It offers satisfactory performance for cracks and crevices, as it seals tightly against surfaces and develops high suction. However, the filter clogs up with fine debris quite quickly, degrading performance.

Pros
  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
  • Cleans fine material out of shallow and medium-depth cracks.

Cons
  • Filter clogs with fine material very quickly when cleaning cracks.

7.8
Carpet Pickup

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ delivers very good carpet pickup overall. High-pile carpet pickup is great since the turbo brush opening is large enough to draw in medium and large debris, and the agitation is just enough to pick up most fine debris. This vacuum also delivers very good low-pile pickup performance, leaving behind only some deeply embedded fine material.

Pros
  • Picks up most large and medium-sized debris.
  • Enough agitation to pick up most fine debris on carpets.

Cons
  • Leaves some deeply embedded fine material in low-pile carpets.

5.3
Pet Hair Pickup

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ delivers disappointing performance in picking up pet hair. The turbo brush lacks the agitation necessary to lift pet hair out of carpets and furniture, leaving embedded hair behind and requiring several extra passes.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Turbo brush struggles with pet hair on carpet and fabric.
  • Requires many passes.

3.1
Air Quality

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ has a very negative impact on air quality. Its cyclone filter does an awful job of keeping dust particles in the dirt compartment and blows out dust in high concentrations all over the room. Emptying this bagless vacuum is a messy process, and it's challenging to contain the plume of dust it releases when emptied, which can scatter around even more dust. It would be best to empty it outdoors if possible.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Ineffective filtration results in poor air quality.

  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust, which settles back down onto surfaces.

    Popular Vacuum Comparisons

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a well-built handheld vacuum. Unlike many other handhelds like the Black+Decker 16V MAX dustbuster Cordless Hand Vacuum, it has great performance on carpet. Its oval shape contains a much larger dirt compartment than the cylindrical Shark Wandvac. However, it has a short battery life and a long recharge time. Its greatest flaw is its terrible filter, though finding a handheld with a HEPA filter isn't easy. If you suffer from allergies, it's best to use a regular HEPA-equipped vacuum in handheld mode, like the Dyson V8, which is available in a "Car+Boat" handheld configuration.

Check out our recommendations for the best handheld vacuums, the best handheld vacuums for pet hair, and the best vacuums for pet hair.

    BISSELL AeroSlim/TurboSlim

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a better handheld vacuum for cleaning pet hair than the BISSELL AeroSlim/TurboSlim. The Shark is easier to maintain, has a larger dirt compartment, and comes with a turbo brush with a self-cleaning brushroll. It also has a significantly better performance on all surface types. However, some users may prefer the BISSELL's smaller size. This vacuum also has better battery performance, is easier to store, and has virtually no recurring costs.

    Shark WANDVAC

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a better handheld vacuum than the Shark WANDVAC. The UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is easier to maintain, it has a larger dirt compartment, and its battery life lasts longer. It also comes with a turbo brush with a self-cleaning brushroll to take care of hair wraps. Its performance on all surface types outperforms the WANDVAC. However, the WANDVAC has virtually no recurring costs, and it's easier to store.

Black+Decker 16V MAX dustbuster Cordless Hand Vacuum

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is better than the Black+Decker 16V MAX dustbuster Cordless Hand Vacuum. The Shark has fewer parts that need regular cleaning, takes less time to recharge while offering a similar overall battery life, comes with a turbo brush attachment, and is significantly more effective in clearing debris on low- and high-pile carpets. Meanwhile, the Black+Decker incurs lower recurring costs, has a larger dustbin, and delivers better performance on hard surfaces.

    Black+Decker dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Pet

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a better handheld vacuum for cleaning pet hair than the Black+Decker dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Pet. The Shark is better built, is easier to maintain, and has fewer recurring costs. It comes with an upholstery tool as well as a hard bristle brush, and it has a better overall performance on all surface types. However, the Black+Decker has a better battery performance and a larger dirt compartment.

    Debris Pickup
    8.5
    Hard Floor Pickup

This vacuum does an excellent job of dealing with debris on hard floors when used with its turbo brush. However, you need to keep the vacuum at a fairly shallow angle so that this attachment can collect larger debris, like rice or cereal.

    8.0
    High-Pile Carpet Pickup

This vacuum does a good job of cleaning high-pile carpet. Its turbo brush tool provides a good level of surface agitation for this surface type, enabling it to clear away medium- to large-sized debris, like rice or cereal. However, its relatively weak suction motor means it can leave behind material that has been thoroughly worked into the carpet fibers.

    7.5
    Low-Pile Carpet Pickup

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ has good performance on low-pile carpet when used with its turbo brush tool. The attachment's suction inlet is large enough to accommodate material like rice or cereal. It's also capable of dealing with the majority of fine material like sand worked into carpet fibers, though a small amount can be left behind.

    6.0
    Pet Hair Pickup

This vacuum does a mediocre job of dealing with pet hair on low-pile carpet. Its turbo brush tool simply doesn't provide enough surface agitation to remove hair that's been thoroughly worked into carpet fibers, and you'll likely need to make several passes to deal with everything.

    4.0
    Pet Hair Furniture Performance
    Sofa Pickup Post Test

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ does a poor job of cleaning debris on fabric furniture. Its Self-Clean Motorized Pet Brush tool is remarkably ineffective in dealing with pet hair, leaving most of it behind. Using it with its hard bristle brush results in only marginal improvement. Pet hair gets collected in the tool's bristles instead of being sucked into its dustbin, forcing you to remove any leftover strands by hand.

    7.0
    Cracks
    Wood Cracks Post Test

This vacuum does a decent job of cleaning crevices. The small suction inlet seals pretty tightly against flat surfaces, and it has little trouble dealing with messes in shallow and medium-depth cracks.

It's worth noting that the vacuum's suction performance was heavily degraded after we used it for this test: its filter was almost completely clogged with baking soda, the type of debris used to evaluate crevice-cleaning performance. If you plan to clean a similar type of debris with this vacuum, be prepared to thoroughly clean its filter right afterward.

    Handheld

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a well-built handheld vacuum. It's made entirely out of plastic, but it feels mostly durable. While the dustbin feels sturdy, the dust cup has a flimsy plastic frame with a cloth attached, which feels a little cheap. However, this vacuum is very easy to assemble.

This vacuum has a mediocre dirt compartment. It has a smaller capacity than alternatives, like the Hoover ONEPWR Cordless Hand Vacuum, and lacks a cover to prevent debris from spilling out. This can be more problematic when the compartment nears its maximum capacity, and you must keep it upright while holding it in your hand. It also doesn't have a maximum fill line to indicate when it's full.

It features a power indicator light that flashes when the battery is low on charge.

    User Maintenance

This vacuum is easy to maintain.

    • Dust cup: This part can be emptied by clicking the button located near the vacuum head and can be removed entirely by pressing the button on the bottom of its body. Since this compartment is quite small, you may need to empty it quite often. You can tap it against your garbage to dislodge debris or rinse it with water for a more thorough clean.
    • Dust cup filter: You can remove this part by pulling it from the dust cup by its plastic frame. The manufacturer suggests tapping this filter to dislodge dirt and debris from the cloth. You should also rinse the filter with water every three months.

All parts that can be cleaned with water should be left to dry for at least 24 hours before reassembly.

This vacuum has decent maneuverability. It's not meant to clean large areas, but it's still lightweight and portable enough to tackle small messes. The crevice and turbo brush can also clean furniture. If you want to clean larger areas, consider the CH963AMZ/CH964AMZ variants, which can be used as a compact stick vacuum since they come with an extension wand and a floorhead intended for use on bare floors.

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ does an awful job of sealing in dust particles. Before you even load it with debris, it releases dust from previous cleaning sessions at fairly high concentrations. In operation, it doesn't take long before the cyclone filter blows very high concentrations of particles out into the room. These impact air quality and settle throughout the area you have just cleaned.

    4.0
    Air Quality During Emptying

Like with almost all bagless vacuums, emptying this one negatively impacts air quality. Even emptying this vacuum deep within a garbage container will result in a plume of dust escaping up into the air and settling down over surfaces. You should empty bagless vacuums outdoors or well away from living areas.

Like many other handheld models, this vacuum delivers great suction performance. It has little to do with the power of its motor and more to do with the fact that its suction inlet can seal very tightly against the surface it rests against.

    4.6
    Airflow
    Maximum Hose Airflow
    27.0 CFM (0.8 m³/min)

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+'s airflow performance is poor overall, although it outperforms other handheld options like the Shark WANDVAC. Still, its small suction motor simply isn't powerful enough to move large quantities of air and debris into its dustbin.
