Best Cordless Vacuums For Hardwood Floors

A cordless vacuum makes it easy to stay on top of everyday messes on hardwood floors, letting you quickly clean your space without being tethered to an outlet. The best cordless vacuums for hardwood floors pick up fine dust and pet hair that settles into the grooves of wood planks without scratching or damaging the wood itself.

We've tested over 110 vacuums, and below are our recommendations for the best cordless vacuums for hardwood floors based on their hard floor cleaning performance, battery life, air quality, and portability.

Here's a quick rundown of what to look for using our lab testing and scoring:

  • Battery Life: Look for a 60+ minutes max runtime (measured on low power) to clean apartments and small homes on a single charge.
  • Air Quality: Look for a Particle Filtration score of 8+ for effective dust and allergen control. Most cordless vacuums are bagless and release dust when the dustbin is emptied, so empty them outdoors if possible.
  • Portability: Under 5 lbs is lightweight, 5 to 7 lbs is average, 7+ lbs is heavy.
  • Roller Type: Soft rollers are best for hardwood floors because they glide over the surface without scratching it.

Check out our buyer's guide at the bottom of the article for more details.

  1. Best Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless vacuum for hardwood floors we've tested, and it's ideal for anyone who wants the absolute best cleaning performance, regardless of the price. Its soft roller floorhead pairs strong suction with a gentle roller to pull up nearly everything in a single pass without scratching the surface, and a built-in laser light helps illuminate particles that you wouldn't otherwise notice. The vacuum's Auto mode automatically detects the surface type and adjusts suction power accordingly as you move around your home. On hardwood floors specifically, you rarely need more than ECO mode, which stretches battery life to a full 75 minutes and covers most homes without a recharge. At just under six and a half pounds, it's manageable enough to carry between floors, and to vacuum hardwood stairs.

Pet hair removal is one of its strongest suits, and its near-perfect filtration system keeps fine dust in the bin rather than recirculating it into your living space. If your home has a mix of hardwood and carpet, the included multi-surface brushroll floorhead handles rugs and high-pile carpet exceptionally well. The one notable drawback is that emptying the dustbin tends to kick up a cloud of dust, so it's best to do it outdoors or away from your main living area. That being said, the same is true for all bagless vacuums.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is the best cordless vacuum for hardwood floors if portability is a priority. It's lightweight at just over five pounds, and its dedicated soft roller floorhead delivers the same hard floor pickup as our top pick, the Dyson V15 Detect, picking up fine dust and larger debris in a single pass without scratching the surface. Despite its trimmed-down size and weight, it still offers a wide variety of features. Like the V15, it also automatically adjusts suction based on the surface type and amount of debris, and includes a built-in laser light to help reveal fine debris and pet hair that would otherwise be easy to miss. The battery lasts up to an hour on Eco mode, which is long enough to clean the hardwood floors in a larger home.

There's also a built-in particle sensor that gives you a real-time estimate of the allergen quantities it's picking up. The downside, however, is that it can't compete with the V15's top-tier performance on carpets, so if you have a mix of rugs and hard floors, the V15 might be worth the higher price. Also, given the vacuum's small size, its dirt compartment is tiny and needs frequent emptying.

  3. Best Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H is a solid mid-range option for anyone who values durability and maneuverability over portability. Its twin-roller floorhead picks up debris on hard floors as well as the Dysons, and it has a similar system that automatically boosts suction when it detects higher concentrations of dirt, so you don't have to manually adjust settings as you clean. It has a HEPA filter that contains fine particles and allergens while you clean, though the bagless system means that these particles can be reintroduced into the air when you empty it. At nearly nine pounds, it's noticeably heavier than both Dyson picks on this list, but its build quality feels much more robust.

The flexible wand is a practical advantage that makes it easier to reach under furniture without having to crouch. On the downside, the self-cleaning brushroll can still get tangled with long hairs, making it a pain to clean. Its odor-neutralization feature uses a replaceable cartridge that emits a detergent-like scent as you clean. However, this scent can become somewhat overwhelming if you leave the cartridge at its maximum intensity and clean your home multiple times per week.

  4. Best Budget Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

The Shark Cordless Pet IX141 is the best budget option on this list, and it's worth considering if you want strong bare floor pickup without spending much. Its bristled brushroll picks up a wide range of debris on hard floors, matching the performance of all three pricier picks here. Battery life tops out at 38 minutes, which covers smaller spaces but falls short for larger homes. At just over seven pounds, it's on the heavier side for a cordless vacuum, so it can be tiring to maneuver over longer sessions. The most significant limitation, though, is filtration: unlike the more expensive picks on our list, this vacuum does a poor job of trapping fine dust and allergens, blowing particles back out into the air as you clean. If anyone in your home has allergies or respiratory sensitivities, that's a hard thing to overlook.

On the plus side, its large dustbin means you won't need to empty it as often as some pricier options, and it's one of the quieter vacuums at this price. Pet hair pickup on carpet is outstanding, clearing almost every strand in a single pass, putting it ahead of both the V12 and the Stratos on that front. There's no automatic power adjustment, though, and the brushroll isn't removable, making it harder to clean.

  5. Best Cheap Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

If you want to spend as little as possible and still get a vacuum with a proper HEPA filter, the Wyze Cordless Vacuum S is worth a look, though it's important to go in with realistic expectations. Hard floor pickup can't match that of any of our other picks, largely because the brushroll tends to scatter larger debris rather than directing it toward the suction inlet, and dirt can get trapped in the floorhead and fall back onto the floor when you lift it. That said, its filtration is genuinely impressive for the price, trapping nearly all fine particles during operation so they don't end up back in the air you're breathing. It's also one of the lightest cordless vacuums on the market, making it easy to carry between rooms or up stairs.

Like the Shark Cordless Pet IX141, it uses a bristled brushroll rather than a soft roller. Both brushrolls are gentle enough not to scratch hardwood floors, but where the Shark Pet's bristles are stiffer and more aggressive, the Wyze's are softer and less effective at directing debris toward the suction inlet. At this price point, it's not surprising that it doesn't have any features like an automatic power adjustment system or an odor-masking cartridge. The small dustbin will need frequent emptying. It's best thought of as a lightweight daily touch-up vacuum rather than a workhorse for whole-home cleaning.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cordless Vacuum For Hardwood Floors

A few factors determine which cordless vacuum is best for your home. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind as you shop:

Battery Life

Consider the size of your space and how long it typically takes to vacuum. Manufacturer runtime claims reflect the battery life at the lowest power setting, so expect a shorter battery life in practice when using higher power levels.

Two metrics matter most:

  • Max Runtime: Aim for 60 minutes or higher, which is enough to clean most apartments and smaller homes on a single charge.
  • Recharge Time: Cheaper models can take three to four hours to fully charge, leaving you stuck waiting between cleaning sessions.

Weight and Storage

A heavier vacuum can be tiring to carry up stairs or maneuver if you have mobility constraints.

  • Anything under 5 lbs is lightweight
  • 5 to 7 lbs is average
  • Over 7 lbs is on the heavier side.

A wall-mounted charging dock also keeps the vacuum off the floor and out of the way, which particularly matters in smaller spaces.

Air Quality

We measure air quality using two separate tests:

  • Particle Filtration: How well the vacuum traps fine particles during cleaning. Many premium cordless vacuums use HEPA-rated filters within a sealed system, which keeps dust from leaking back into the air as you clean. Look for a score of 8.0 or higher, especially if anyone in your home suffers from allergies.
  • Air Quality During Emptying: Cordless vacuums are typically bagless, so emptying the dustbin releases dust into the air. Just keep in mind that even high-filtration cordless vacuums score poorly on emptying, so plan to empty the bin outdoors.

Roller Type

There are three main roller types to choose from:

  • Soft rollers are gentler on bare floors and excellent at picking up fine debris and pet hair, but are less effective on carpet.
  • Bristled brushroll handles carpet and pet hair more aggressively, but can struggle to pick up larger debris on bare floors.
  • Dual rollers combine both into a single floorhead, offering the most versatility on multi-surface homes.
