The SEBO Airbelt D4 is a high-end canister vacuum. It has a wide variety of convenience features, including a rocker switch that allows you to fine-tune its suction power, an onboard tool storage compartment, and an auto-retracting power cord. Depending on the variant, it includes a straight-suction Parquet Brush, an ET-1 powerhead, a crevice tool, a dusting brush, and an upholstery nozzle. This bagged vacuum is also equipped with a three-stage filter.

Our Verdict

8.9
House

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is an excellent option for cleaning a house. This corded canister vacuum has amazing build quality and delivers great pickup performance on bare floors, even pulling in medium and large debris once you remove the front floor brush bristles. Should you have shedding pets, this vacuum offers outstanding performance on pet hair. Almost all this dust, debris, and dander stays out of the air and in the dirtbag due to the effective filter, and this dirt largely remains in the bag when you dispose of it. However, picking up medium and large debris on carpets isn't a strong suit of the low-mounted powerhead, though it works fairly well on fine material.

Pros
  • Excellent build quality.
  • Great performance on bare floors.

  • Superb pet hair cleaning capability.
  • Effective filtration system.

Cons
  • Low powerhead front opening struggles with medium and large debris on carpets.

8.2
Small Apartment

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is a great choice for cleaning a small apartment. It won't blow dust over your living areas since it has a good filter, and disposing of the full dirtbag keeps dust well-contained. In terms of performance, it's great on bare floors and good on fine material on carpets, though the powerhead struggles with medium and large debris on carpets. If you have pets, it'll pick up nearly every strand of even deeply embedded pet hair. Though this is a large vacuum, storing it in a closet is easy since it has onboard tool storage, an auto-retracting power cord, and the wand clips to the underside of the canister.

Pros
  • Great performance on bare floors.

  • Superb pet hair cleaning capability.
  • Effective filtration system.

  • Easy to store, includes onboard tool storage.

Cons
  • Low powerhead front opening struggles with medium and large debris on carpets.

6.7
Stairs

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is adequate for vacuuming stairs, provided you don't mind lugging this very heavy vacuum up and down stairs. While this is a corded canister model, its long power cord easily extends over even long staircases. The straight-suction Parquet Brush is great on bare stair treads, and the powerhead or upholstery tool is effective on fine material and pet hair on carpeted stairs, though these tools are too low to clear medium and large debris. You don't have to be concerned about blowing dust into the air and back onto your stairs; the filter system keeps most dirt and debris well-contained.

Pros
  • Great performance on bare floors.

  • Superb pet hair cleaning capability.
  • Effective filtration system.

  • Long operating range.
Cons
  • Heavy canister body.
  • Stiff vacuum hose.
  • Low powerhead front opening struggles with medium and large debris on carpets.

7.1
Cars

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is a decent choice for vacuuming the inside of your car. The power cord and hose are so long that you won't need an extension cord, but you'll find this canister vacuum very heavy to move out to the garage or driveway. On the bright side, it's very well built, so you don't need to worry about moving it around your garage or driveway. A crevice tool, an upholstery tool, and an extension wand help you put this vacuum's high suction to good use cleaning your car, and it makes short work of pet hair on upholstery, though it's missing a turbo brush. When you're done cleaning, you can store the tools in the canister, and the vacuum's maintenance needs are minimal. You can just clip the wand to the underside of the canister and store it vertically in a closet or corner.

Pros
  • Excellent build quality.
  • Superb pet hair cleaning capability.
  • Long operating range.
  • Easy to store, includes onboard tool storage.

Cons
  • Heavy canister body.
  • Stiff vacuum hose.
  • No turbo brush.
  • Low front opening on upholstery brush pushes around medium and large debris.

8.2
Bare Floor Pickup

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is great for bare floors. When you use it with its parquet tool, it can handle all sorts of debris, though you may need to lift the floorhead and make multiple passes or remove the front brush strip on the head to deal with larger debris. It also does an amazing job of clearing messes in cracks.

Pros
  • Great performance on bare floors.

  • Very effective on debris in cracks.

Cons
  • Parquet floorhead sits too low for most medium and large debris.

6.3
Carpet Pickup

The SEBO Airbelt D4 delivers acceptable performance on carpets. While it picks up fine debris fairly well, especially on low-pile carpets, its low-mounted floorhead struggles with medium and large debris. Maneuvering the large floorhead around to pick up material in edges and corners is difficult, so it leaves some of this debris behind.

Pros
  • Works well on fine material in low-pile carpets.

Cons
  • Low powerhead front opening struggles with medium and large debris on carpets.

9.0
Pet Hair Pickup

The SEBO Airbelt D4 offers remarkable performance when picking up pet hair. Its ET-1 powerhead clears away nearly every last strand from carpet in one pass. On furniture, the upholstery tool picks up every single hair, though it is a bit difficult to move this tool due to the resistance of its hard-bristle brush.

Pros
  • Superb pet hair cleaning capability.
  • Great performance removing pet hair from furniture using the upholstery tool.

Cons
None
7.7
Air Quality

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is good for air quality. When you're using the vacuum, a new dirtbag contains most of the dust. You can expect performance to improve after a few vacuuming sessions, when dust blocks the pores in the dirtbag. The dirtbag contains most of the dust when you empty the vacuum, but a little dust that coats the surface of the dirtbag and the dirtbag seal gets released when you move the dirtbag and close the seal.

Pros
  • Effective filtration system.

  • Dirtbag contains most of the dust when you seal the flap and remove it.

Cons
  • Underperforms relative to other premium bagged canister vacuums.

    Popular Vacuum Comparisons

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is a premium canister vacuum that trades blows with the best models on the market. It stands out for its excellent debris pickup performance on bare floors, which, coupled with solid air filtration and strong pet hair pickup, makes it a natural choice for any pet owner with sensitivity to dander. It also uses larger dirtbags, incurs lower recurring costs, and has a much longer operating range than competing canister vacuums on the market, like the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog. Unfortunately, this is quite a heavy model, so it isn't quite as maneuverable as smaller canister models like the Miele Boost CX1 or a high-end cordless option like the Dyson V15 Detect. Of course, those bagless models come with their own tradeoffs; the Dyson uses a lower-power motor, has a smaller dirt capacity, and feels relatively cheaply built. Meanwhile, the Boost and Detect's bagless designs result in dust clouds whenever you empty them. Overall, due to its power, performance, and superior filtration, the SEBO Airbelt D4 is an easy recommendation for people with larger homes, pets, or allergies.

If you're looking for alternatives, check out our list of recommendations for the best canister vacuums, the best HEPA vacuums, and the best vacuums for hardwood floors.

    Miele Complete C3 Alize

The Miele Complete C3 Alize and the SEBO Airbelt D4 each have their advantages, meaning one might suit you better than the other, depending on your needs. The Miele weighs less, is easier to maneuver, makes less noise, and delivers slightly better crack-cleaning performance. Meanwhile, the SEBO incurs much lower recurring costs thanks to its larger dirtbag and longer-lasting filters, has a much longer cleaning range, and gives you a wider range of adjustability when changing its suction power level.

Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is superior to the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog in most aspects. The SEBO incurs lower costs of ownership, thanks to its use of larger dustbags and longer-lasting filters. It also has a longer range than the Miele, and it does a better job of sealing in fine allergens, at least when the C3 isn't fitted with its higher-end HEPA AirClean filter. All that being said, the Miele is noticeably easier to maneuver in tight spots by virtue of its smaller and lighter canister body. On the topic of attachments, only the SEBO's Parquet tool has a set of removable front bristles, which allow it to clean larger debris without "snowplowing" debris forward. That said, the two vacuum's powerheads are more evenly matched, with the Miele's SEB 228 head having one additional height setting, but the SEBO's ET-1 head being easier to maintain.

    Miele Classic C1

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is better than the Miele Classic C1 for most uses. The SEBO is better built, incurs lower recurring costs, uses much larger dirtbags, and has a significantly longer operating range. Its power rocker switch also gives you a more precise level of control in adjusting suction power compared to the Miele vacuum's power level presets. Unlike the Miele, the SEBO also features a three-stage filtration system that includes a HEPA filter. Conversely, the Miele is smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable.

    NaceCare HVR 200 Henry

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is better than the NaceCare HVR 200 Henry. The SEBO is easier to store, has a longer operating range, has a more advanced three-stage filtration system, weighs a little less, and delivers better performance on bare floors and carpets. Meanwhile, the NaceCare uses even larger dirtbags that don't need to be replaced as often, and this model is a little more maneuverable.

    Debris Pickup
    8.0
    Hard Floor Pickup

This vacuum does a great job of cleaning hard floors when used with its Parquet floor brush. In its default configuration, the floorhead sits a little too close to the ground to comfortably pass over larger debris and instead pushes them around. Thankfully, you can remove the front bristles, allowing the head to pass over bigger material without forcing you to lift the head.

    6.0
    High-Pile Carpet Pickup

This vacuum delivers passable performance on high-pile carpet when used with the ET-1 powerhead. The attachment's bulky size means that some large and medium-sized material, like rice or cereal, might be left near corners and along walls. You'll need to make a second pass to fully clear away finer material that's been worked deep into carpet fibers. It's also worth noting that a small amount of debris can get stuck in the floorhead and fall out once the vacuum is shut off.

    6.5
    Low-Pile Carpet Pickup

This vacuum offers okay performance on low-pile carpet with the ET-1 powerhead. It easily clears away fine debris like sand that’s been worked into this surface type, and a single back-and-forth pass will clear the majority of larger debris like rice or cereal.

    9.5
    Pet Hair Pickup

This vacuum does an exceptional job of dealing with pet hair on low-pile carpet. A single back-and-forth pass with the ET-1 powerhead will clear all but the most stubbornly-embedded strands of hair on carpet, to the point where anything remaining is virtually unnoticeable.

    8.0
    Pet Hair Furniture Performance
    Sofa Pickup Post Test

Using its upholstery tool, this vacuum does a great job dealing with pet hair on furniture. Unlike many comparable upholstery tools, this attachment has small bristled brushes instead of lint strips to help collect debris, making it harder to push around on fabric surfaces.

    8.5
    Cracks
    Wood Cracks Post Test

This vacuum is excellent at cleaning debris from cracks. When using its floorhead, it easily cleans debris in shallow and medium-depth cracks, though debris wedged in especially deep crevices can get left behind. You should use its crevice tool if you want to completely clear all debris in deeper cracks.

    Vacuum Type
    Canister

This vacuum feels amazingly well-built. The canister body is dense, high-grade plastic, encircled by a cloth-covered air cushion to help protect your walls and furniture if you ever bump into them. Its durable rubber wheels are mounted on casters and roll very smoothly. Its telescopic wand is mainly polished aluminum and features a handle with a rubberized grip. There is one notable area of concern, as the hinge for the bag compartment door makes a noticeable cracking noise when opened.

The vacuum is very easy to take apart and reassemble for routine maintenance, and swapping tools and attachments is fairly simple. The hose can be very hard to remove from the body.

According to the manufacturer, you only need to swap in a new dirtbag every six to 12 months. The small indicator window, located just behind the hose connection port, turns orange when the bag is filled or if there's a blockage.

    User Maintenance

The vacuum is impressively easy to maintain.

    • Dirtbag: The dirtbag is located under the top cover of the vacuum and can be simply pulled free of its slot. The dirtbag has a cap to keep in dust when disposing of it. You should replace the dirtbag once it's full.
    • Parquet Brush Floorhead: This variant of the vacuum uses a non-motorized floorhead with no moving components, which makes it easier to clean. The lint strips at either end of the suction inlet are there to collect most smaller debris, and you can easily replace them. You can change the brush strips by removing the yellow cap on the side of the floorhead with a screwdriver and then pulling it free, allowing you to insert a replacement.
    • Filters: The pre-motor microfilter is under the lid of the dirtbag compartment, while the exhaust filter wraps around a frame underneath the canister body, seen here. These filters don't need washing, and you should replace them after 10 to 20 dirtbag replacements.

    Filter Part Number8191AM
    HEPA Filter Part Number8191AM

This vacuum incurs fairly low recurring costs.

    • Dirtbag: The dirtbag should be replaced once it's filled, which the manufacturer estimates should be every six to 12 months, depending on how frequently the vacuum is used.
    • Filters: The pre-motor microfilter and post-motor exhaust filter should be replaced after you've swapped out 10 to 20 dirtbags.
    • Parquet Floorhead Brush Strips: You'll need to replace the parquet tool's brush strips once they're visibly worn—the manufacturer specifies that it's time to replace them once they take on the appearance of a "worn toothbrush." Brush strips are sold in packs of one or two.

You can find all replacement brushes and replacement bags and filters on SEBO's website.

This vacuum has quite a few convenience options. The "+" and "-" suction control buttons adjust suction power in minor increments instead of corresponding to a small number of preset settings. This wide range of adjustability allows you to fine-tune suction power to various surfaces. Unlike the Miele Complete C3 Alize, the suction control buttons are on the handle instead of the canister body, making it easier to change settings on the fly. A mechanical indicator behind the hose attachment port turns orange if the dirtbag is full or if the vacuum is clogged. There's also a thermal cut-out switch that turns off the motor if the vacuum is overheating due to a blockage or some other mechanical issue.

The vacuum is reasonably portable. Its body is quite heavy, especially compared to smaller canister vacuums like the Miele Classic C1. However, it does have a built-in carrying handle that makes it easier to pick up and move from room to room. Its wand also feels fairly lightweight in your hand, so it isn't too fatiguing to use for extended periods.

    Maneuverability
    Alternative Configuration

The SEBO Airbelt D4 has good maneuverability. The floorhead is very easy to maneuver on bare floors thanks to its smoothly rolling wheels, wide range of articulation, and low-profile design, making it easy to clean under tables and chairs. However, the grippy wheels on the floorhead can make pushing the vacuum around on shag-pile carpeting hard, even when it's set to its lowest suction power level. The canister body isn't too hard to pull around. Unfortunately, its hose is very stiff, making it hard to maneuver in cluttered areas, especially compared to alternatives like the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog. Swapping out attachments is quick and simple, and the onboard storage compartment places the included tools within easy reach.

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is good for air quality during operation. Its dirtbag and well-sealed construction trap particles fairly well.

Note that these readings are with a new dirtbag, and a dirtbag after several cleaning sessions will perform better. Particles block up pores and channels in the bag as you use the vacuum, so after a few uses, the bag will trap particles much more effectively.

    8.0
    Air Quality During Emptying

Sealing and disposing of the dirtbag only releases a small amount of dust. A new dirtbag doesn't seal perfectly, so there's a thin coating of dust on the dirtbag, in the interior of the canister, and on the dirtbag's sealing flap. Lifting the dirtbag out of the canister and closing the flap releases some of this dust, but it's not a large amount.
