The Miele Boost CX1 is a high-end bagless canister vacuum from Miele. It's part of Miele's small line-up of bagless canister vacuums and features a 1200W motor with a bagless filter design. The vacuum features HEPA filtration, an auto cord retractor, and four adjustable suction power settings. Depending on the variant you choose, this model can be fitted with floorheads made for particular surface types.

There are several variants that come with different accessories, and some are region-specific. See the available options in the Differences Between Variants section.

Our Verdict

8.4
House

The Miele Boost CX1 is an impressive option for a house. Since it's corded, you don't have to worry about runtime, regardless of the size of your house. This is a very well-built canister vacuum, and despite its bagless design, its HEPA filter works just about perfectly in containing all particles, preventing poor air quality and dust scatter. While the pet hair and fine material pickup performance is great on a variety of surfaces, the low-mounted floorhead tends to push around medium- and large-sized materials. Since this is a bagless vacuum, emptying it in the open releases a cloud of dust that can impact air quality and deposit dust throughout your living space as it settles. Therefore, it's best to empty it outdoors if possible.

Pros
  • HEPA filter seals in nearly every dust particle.

  • Great build quality.

  • Easily picks up fine material.

  • Great pet hair pickup.

Cons
  • Struggles with medium and large debris.

  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust.

8.0
Small Apartment

The Miele Boost CX1 is a great option for a small apartment. Its outstanding HEPA filter ensures that you won't create poor air quality in your apartment or blow dust around, since it seals in nearly every particle. This vacuum is compact for a canister model, making it ideal for confined spaces, thanks to its small wand and floorhead. It packs away neatly into a compact space, and you can store its tools on the wand using an included adapter. In terms of pickup, it's great for pet hair and fine materials on most surfaces, but its floorheads tend to push around medium- and large-sized materials. Try to empty it outdoors if possible, as this creates a cloud of dust that impacts air quality and scatters dust around.

Pros
  • HEPA filter seals in nearly every dust particle.

  • Easily picks up fine material.

  • Includes adapter for storing tools right on the wand.

  • Great pet hair pickup.

Cons
  • Struggles with medium and large debris.

  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust.

6.4
Stairs

The Miele Boost CX1 is suitable for use on stairs, provided you're comfortable carrying a heavy vacuum around. It features a long power cord, allowing you to reach an outlet. While it clears away medium and large debris, its high suction means it easily picks up fine material, and it's great at removing pet hair. The HEPA filter seals in particles almost perfectly when vacuuming stairs, so you don't have to worry about poor air quality or blowing dust everywhere. However, the vacuum's bagless construction means that you'll create a cloud of dust when you empty it, so it's best not to do this in a stairwell.

Pros
  • HEPA filter seals in nearly every dust particle.

  • Great pet hair pickup.

Cons
  • Struggles with medium and large debris.

  • Heavy.

7.3
Cars

The Miele Boost CX1 does a decent job cleaning cars. Its power cord is long enough to use this very well-built vacuum in the driveway or garage. You can use its extension wand with either the crevice tool or upholstery tool, although it lacks a small turbo brush. Its high suction will easily clean automotive fabrics, and it's extremely effective on pet hair. When you're done, it's easy to put away in a compact configuration, but there are a lot of parts to clean first.

Pros
  • Great build quality.

  • High suction.

  • Great pet hair pickup.

Cons
  • Lots of parts to clean and maintain.

  • No small turbo brush.

6.2
Bare Floor Pickup

The Miele Boost CX1 offers passable performance on bare floors. However, it does a poor job picking up medium or large debris on floors, as it tends to plow these around. Its high suction makes it much better for fine debris, though, especially when it's caught in your floors' cracks and crevices.

Pros
  • Easily picks up fine material.

  • Easily lifts fine debris from cracks and crevices.

Cons
  • Struggles with medium and large debris.

6.3
Carpet Pickup

The Miele Boost CX1 delivers acceptable performance on carpets. Its floorheads handle even deeply embedded fine material well, but each has its issues with medium and large debris. On high-pile carpets, the turbo brush tends to scatter medium and large debris around and trap it, which eventually gets deposited back onto the carpet. On low-pile carpets, the straight suction floorhead leaves some medium and large material behind. The straight suction floorhead is difficult to move against carpet since the vacuum's high suction makes it pull very strongly against the floor.

Pros
  • Easily picks up fine material.

Cons
  • Struggles with medium and large debris.

8.0
Pet Hair Pickup

The Miele Boost CX1 offers great pet hair pickup performance. The turbo brush floorhead is good at removing pet hair from carpets, even picking up embedded strands. However, the brush has an inactive zone for the belt, which leaves a strip of pet hair untouched. The upholstery tool on upholstered furniture is superb at removing pet hair, clearing everything in a single pass or two.

Pros
  • Good pet hair pickup from carpet.

  • Fantastic performance picking up pet hair from furniture fabric.

Cons
  • Inactive area on the turbo brush floorhead leaves a strip of untouched pet hair.

8.1
Air Quality

The Miele Boost CX1 has no impact on air quality during operation. Its bagless HEPA filter does an outstanding job of keeping dust particles contained as you vacuum. You don't need to worry about low air quality or dust settling around the room while this vacuum is in operation. Unfortunately, emptying this bagless vacuum creates a cloud of dust, which will impact air quality and scatter dust around your living space. If possible, empty this outdoors.

Pros
  • HEPA filter seals in nearly every dust particle.

Cons
  • Emptying creates a cloud of dust.

    Popular Vacuum Comparisons

The Miele Boost CX1 is a high-end bagless canister vacuum that shares many of the same internals and components with Miele's well-known bagged canister vacuums. It shares the 1200W motor with Miele Classic C1 and Miele Complete C3, and since it also shares floorheads with Miele's other models, the Boost CX1's performance is similar. The design of Miele's straight-suction and turbo floorheads places them too low to the floor to effectively vacuum up all medium and large materials, but their high suction makes them ideal for fine debris and cracks.

The Boost CX1 lacks a powerhead and can't be upgraded, so its performance in picking up pet hair with its air-powered turbo brush floorhead isn't quite as good as the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog with its powerhead. The Boost CX1's bagless design should lower recurring costs since you don't have to buy dirtbags, but unfortunately, the Boost CX1's yearly-replaceable filter actually costs more than a year's supply of dirtbags for the Classic C1. Comparing this Miele bagless canister vacuum to the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal, a Dyson bagless canister, the Dyson has a powered floorhead, offers better debris pickup overall, and has no recurring costs because it uses a permanent filter; however, it isn't as well-built as the Miele. And stacked up against a flagship bagged canister vacuum, the SEBO Airbelt D4, you'll find the SEBO has better debris pickup, is slightly better built, has a much longer cord and hose, but the bagged design has a higher recurring cost than the Miele.

If you're looking for alternative options, consider our recommendations for the best canister vacuums, the best bagless vacuums, or the best vacuums with good suction.

    Dyson V15 Detect

The Dyson V15 Detect and the Miele Boost CX1 are very different vacuums; their only common feature is that they're both bagless. The Dyson performs much better overall, though. It's a little easier to maintain and has zero recurring cost. However, the Miele is a canister vacuum, which has a significantly larger dirt compartment, and it also boasts higher build quality than the Dyson.

    Miele Classic C1

The Miele Classic C1 is a better vacuum than the Miele Boost CX1. Since they both use the same motor and floorhead, performance is similar, but the Classic C1 is easier to maintain. Its dirtbag contains all the dust, so you won't have to clean parts. Recurring costs should be lower on the Boost CX1 because it's bagless, but it uses a replaceable filter that's more expensive than the C1's dirtbags.

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal [Animal Pro, Multi Floor]

The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal is a slightly better vacuum overall than the Miele Boost CX1. It performs slightly better on every floor surface, is much easier to maintain, and has zero recurring costs versus the Miele vacuum's expensive replaceable filter. The Miele is much better built, though.

    Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra

The Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is a better vacuum than the Miele Boost CX1. It performs better on every floor surface, is easier to maintain, and has virtually no recurring cost. However, since it's a large, heavy upright, it's less portable and more difficult to maneuver than the Miele canister, and Dyson also can't match Miele's build quality.

    Debris Pickup
    5.0
    Hard Floor Pickup

The Miele Boost CX1 delivers disappointing performance on hard floors. It picks up fine material but plows a lot of medium and large debris forward and releases a lot of retained debris when you pull it back.

Miele recommends the straight-suction AllTeQ universal floorhead for hard floors and advises against using the TurboTeQ turbo brush floorhead due to the potential for scratching. The Parquet Twister tool included with the Miele Boost CX1 Parquet delivers similar results, plowing even more debris forward while retaining a bit less material.

    6.0
    High-Pile Carpet Pickup

This vacuum delivers mediocre performance on high-pile carpets when using the TurboTeQ turbo brush floorhead, which Miele recommends for this purpose. It picks up most of the fine debris but retains a significant amount of medium debris that is thrown out of the floorhead by the spinning brushroll. Material also gets stuck in the floorhead between cleanings and gets released over time.

The universal straight-suction floorhead is very difficult to move on carpet, as it pulls strongly against the carpet. It doesn't perform much better, with more fine debris left behind, especially at the edges.

Turning the suction level down means the brushroll throws around less retained material since it's air-driven and spinning more slowly, but leaves behind more fine material.

    6.5
    Low-Pile Carpet Pickup

The Miele Boost CX1 offers adequate performance picking up debris from low-pile carpet using its recommended universal straight-suction floorhead. It picks up most fine material but leaves some medium and large debris behind and traps material in its floorhead.

The TurboTeQ turbo brush floorhead performs a little worse, leaving behind more fine and medium debris, but picking up more large material. However, it's easier to move on carpet because the suction doesn't strongly pull the floorhead into the carpet as much as it does with the straight-suction AllTeQ universal floorhead.

    7.5
    Pet Hair Pickup

The vacuum offers good performance picking up pet hair from carpet with its TurboTeQ turbo brush floorhead. The brushroll does a good job of detaching pet hair from carpet, lifting all of it from the surface and most of the embedded hair as well. However, the brushroll is driven by a belt to the right of center, resulting in an inactive zone and necessitating an extra pass.

The floorhead retains debris from previous cleaning sessions and redeposits it. It's extremely difficult to disassemble and clean the floorhead completely.

Miele recommends the straight suction universal floorhead for heavily soiled carpets, with the suction power level set to maximum. This suction makes it very difficult to move the floorhead on carpet, leading to poor results.

    Pet Hair Furniture Performance
    Sofa Pickup Post Test

The Miele Boost CX1 delivers outstanding performance when picking up pet hair from furniture with its upholstery tool. All pet hair is picked up, though some gets caught in the tool and redeposited, requiring an additional pass.

    Cracks
    Wood Cracks Post Test

The vacuum is superb at cleaning fine debris from cracks using its straight-suction AllTeQ floorhead, sucking up nearly all fine debris from cracks of any orientation or depth. We raised the floorhead to the Hard Floor setting, following Miele's recommendation for hardwood floors. You can achieve even better performance with the floorhead at the lower Carpet height setting, as it seals more tightly to the floor. However, Miele warns that you may scratch more delicate flooring at this setting.

    User Maintenance

This vacuum is reasonably easy to maintain, though its multi-stage filter increases the number of components that need maintenance.

You can easily cut any hair wrapped around the TurboTeQ brushroll with scissors, following a groove down the brushroll. There's also a small door to clean the air turbine powering the brushroll, but unfortunately, you can't remove the brushroll. It's very difficult and time-consuming to disassemble and clean the floorhead, which can lead to debris getting stuck inside the floorhead body. This old material can fall back out onto the floor during cleaning sessions.

The filters are much easier to clean. You can easily remove the filter frame, pre-filter, foam filter, and pleated paper filter, and clean them when required. You should replace the exhaust filter once a year or when the timestrip indicator turns red. You can also replace the thread lifter on the AllTeQ universal floorhead when it wears out by prying it off with a screwdriver or similar tool.

Complete maintenance details can be found in the user manual on Miele's website.

Since the Miele Boost CX1 is bagless, there are fewer parts to replace than a bagged vacuum like the Miele Classic C1.

You'll only need to replace the exhaust filter, which can be purchased from Miele's website. The Cat & Dog variant comes with a HEPA filter, while the base variant comes with a Hygiene AirClean Filter. You can use either filter on both variants.

This filter should be replaced every 50 hours of operation or about once a year. The HEPA filter comes with a timestrip showing its remaining life. Our time strip arrived detached and activated, and couldn't be reattached.

    Maneuverability
    Alternative Configuration

The Miele Boost CX1 has impressive maneuverability. The power cord and hose are long enough to allow you to easily clean an average-sized room without needing to move to a different outlet. The universal floorhead's wheels move very freely, and the slim floorhead makes it easy to maneuver into every position. The TurboTeQ floorhead works well on loose tasseled rugs and doesn't catch on the tassels.

The soft-bristle brush and upholstery tool are easy to attach and work well on tables, shelves, and furniture fabric. Unfortunately, you can't move the floorhead very far under low furniture because the head won't stay flat, breaking the suction. You'll also find that the TurboTeQ head doesn't have a lot of torque, and the brushroll frequently stops spinning on loose carpets.

This vacuum's filtration performance is superb. It won't have any impact on air quality because the HEPA filter contains nearly all particles as the vacuum operates. It releases so few particles during warm-up and operation that they're hard to measure.

    4.0
    Air Quality During Emptying

Like nearly all bagless vacuums, the Miele Boost CX1 negatively impacts air quality when you empty it. Even if you empty it deep into a garbage bag, it'll still be impossible to contain all the dust. We recommend you empty a bagless vacuum outdoors or in a space sealed off from living areas, like a garage.
