Keeping large rooms free of dust and pollutants can be challenging: no matter how much you clean, you still find yourself wiping dust off shelves and tables. It's probably worth investing in an air purifier in situations like these. The most important factor to consider when choosing a large room air purifier is overall coverage, handily defined as its clean air delivery rate (CADR). That isn't to say other factors aren't important. Overall particle filtration performance is obviously crucial, but smart features like particle sensors and Wi-Fi connectivity can make for a more hands-off ownership experience where you won't necessarily have to babysit the device as it operates.
We've tested more than 50 air purifiers, and below are our recommendations for the best air purifiers for large rooms based on our test results. Here are the most important things to look for:
- Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): Larger rooms demand a higher degree of airflow from your air purifier: look for units with a CADR exceeding 320 m3/hr (188.3 CFM). If you want an idea of how well-suited an air purifier is to your given room, take a look at our room sizing tool.
- Features: Air quality sensors and built-in Wi-Fi minimize the amount of necessary babysitting, which is helpful if you plan on running your air purifier while you're away from home.
- Footprint: Even in a bigger space, an air purifier that doesn't take up unnecessary room is a benefit, as it gives you more flexibility in terms of where to place the unit.

Best Large Room Air Purifier For Most People
Pets8.4Bedroom8.3Particle Filtration Rate8.4Measured PM1.0 CADR500 m³/hr (294 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed42.7 m² (459 ft²)The best large room air purifier for most people that we've tested is the Winix C909. This unit, available primarily from Costco retailers, strikes a good blend of performance, price, and overall features. At its highest fan speed, its clean air delivery rate (CADR) of nearly 300 CFM is enough to clear the air in rooms exceeding 450 ft2 (41.8 m2), making it a good option for dealing with dust, pollen, and other airborne particles in bigger living areas or apartments. It's also relatively quiet at this speed, which is useful if you have it set up near a TV or in a kitchen. Still, if you want even less disturbance, for overnight use in bigger primary suites, its performance at lower, quieter fan speeds remains impressive. The main downside here is the C909's bulk, which can make it a bit of a challenge to fit in more cluttered corners.
This unit's filtration system is pretty standard, comprising a pre-filter, main allergen filter, and activated carbon sheet for odor reduction, along with Winix's proprietary PlasmaWave particle ionization system, which is advertised to neutralize airborne particles. Like most similar systems, it emits a small amount of ozone while in operation, though quantities are certified to fall within safe limits. All the same, if you'd rather not deal with it, you can disable the system, and doing so has little overall impact on performance. The C909 also features an air quality sensor that allows it to automatically adjust its fan speed in real time, though you can also operate it manually using the on-board controls or via the Winix Smart smartphone app.

Best Large Room Air Purifier
Pets9.1Bedroom9.0Particle Filtration Rate9.1Measured PM1.0 CADR729 m³/hr (429 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed62.2 m² (670 ft²)If you're willing to spend more on an air purifier in exchange for a more subtle design and even more coverage, than the Blueair Blue Signature Large is the best air purifier for large rooms we've tested, thanks to its remarkably high performance and quiet operation. This high-end unit has a squat profile that occupies a fair amount of space, but on the flip side, its chic design and flat top effectively allow it to blend in as a modern end table, unlike the function-first Winix C909. In terms of performance, it has a high enough max clean air delivery rate (CADR) to operate effectively within large, open-concept living areas or larger basements. While it can be a little distracting at its max fan speed, it can still provide a good level of air quality when dropping fan speeds to a whisper-quiet volume. You can pair this unit with your smartphone to change settings while you're away from home or, thanks to its laser particle sensor, get a fairly accurate estimate of air quality.
This unit's HEPASilent filtration system consists of a pre-filter for bigger motes of dust, a particle filter for dealing with airborne pollutants, and activated carbon and mineral layers for reducing odors. It also has a particle ionization system, which works a little differently than some other ionizers. Instead of releasing negative ions that bond to particles and cause them to be drawn to one another, whereupon they fall out of the air and onto the ground (where you can dust them away later), the Blueair works by drawing particles to its electrostatically charged filter layer, so there's less need for cleanup on your end. That said, like most ionizer systems, it also produces ozone. While its ozone production is AHAM-certified to fall within safe limits, the main issue is that this system can't be disabled and could represent a potential dealbreaker for those who suffer from acute ozone sensitivity, which isn't the case with the aforementioned Winix.

Best Mid-Range Large Room Air Purifier
Pets8.4Bedroom7.8Particle Filtration Rate8.8Measured PM1.0 CADR617 m³/hr (363 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed52.7 m² (567 ft²)If the Blueair Blue Signature Large's always-on ionizer is a dealbreaker, check out the Levoit Core 600S. There are a few compromises next to the pricier Blueair: while the Levoit's max CADR is impressively high, and generally sufficient for bigger spaces, it still lags behind the Blueair in this respect, taking just under 20% more time to lower particle quantities to the same level in an equivalently sized room. It also runs a little louder at both its maximum and minimum fan speeds, though it won't be too obtrusive if you run it in this setting while sleeping. It does have a slightly narrower footprint, though, unlike the Blueair, it can't be used as a piece of functional furniture and won't blend into your home's decor as seamlessly.
The Levoit is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing you to pair the device with your smartphone and view an estimate of air quality, change the fan speed setting, or see filter change alerts through the VeSync companion app. Beyond that, the 600S also features Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integration, so you can control it using voice commands.

Best Lower Mid-Range Large Room Air Purifier
Pets7.9Bedroom7.7Particle Filtration Rate8.0Measured PM1.0 CADR414 m³/hr (243 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed35.3 m² (380 ft²)The Coway Airmega 200M is a more affordable means of keeping the air in larger spaces clean and fresh. Its max CADR is certainly nothing to sneeze at, though it does fall short of the bigger, more expensive units we recommend. Still, it should be suitable for the biggest of bedrooms or offices, and likely enough for most living rooms and dining areas. Unlike the Levoit Core 600S, this unit lacks Wi-Fi connectivity, which isn't likely to be a deal-breaker for most, but worth keeping in mind if you're searching for a hands-free ownership experience. Do note that there is a built-in particle sensor, though, which allows the Coway to automatically adjust its fan speed setting based on air quality, handy for overnight operation.
Unlike the Levoit, this air purifier also features an ionizer system, which can help reduce dust buildup. This system is more conventional than that of the Blueair Blue Signature Large, and it works by causing airborne pollutants to clump together and fall out of the air, where they can be vacuumed or dusted away later. Unlike the Blueair, you can turn the ionizer off if you're particularly sensitive to ozone.

Best Budget Large Room Air Purifier
Pets8.2Bedroom8.4Particle Filtration Rate8.1Measured PM1.0 CADR439 m³/hr (258 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed37.5 m² (404 ft²)The best budget large room air purifier we've tested is the Winix 5530. This relatively affordable unit offers impressive performance for the price, being able to clear the air in spaces up to roughly 404 ft² (37.5 m²) at its highest fan speed full power; while this is less than high-end units like the Blueair Blue Signature Large, it's still enough for most living rooms or dining areas. It also performs well at quieter fan speeds, still covering rooms up to about 190 ft² (17.7 m²), so it's easy to leave running in the background in bedrooms or home offices, though the pricier Coway Airmega 200M does even better in this respect. It's also relatively feature-rich, with smartphone connectivity, an air quality sensor mode, and a display that turns off in its 'Sleep' mode to minimize distractions.
Like the Coway and Winix C909, this unit features a three-stage filtration system teamed with a particle ionizer, which is meant to neutralize airborne particles. As with most other similarly equipped units, this PlasmaWave system produces a small amount of ozone, which is certified to fall within safe limits. That being said, if you or someone else in your household has a particular sensitivity to ozone, and you aren't willing to take the chance, you can turn it off, and doing so doesn't have a massive impact on performance.

Best DIY Large Room Air Purifier
Pets7.7Bedroom4.3Particle Filtration Rate9.5Measured PM1.0 CADR943 m³/hr (555 CFM)See all our test resultsRecommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed80.5 m² (867 ft²)If you need an air purifier for a large space that isn't being lived in, like a workshop or an unfinished basement, consider building your own Corsi-Rosenthal Box. Following this guide, we made our own using a 3M Filtrete air filter set and a Lasko 20-inch box fan. This homemade option lacks quality-of-life features compared to devices like the Blueair Blue Signature Large. There's no particle sensor, Wi-Fi connectivity, or odor-absorbing carbon filter. The latter omission isn't a big deal since most air purifiers with carbon filters that we've tested don't contain enough of the material to deal with even moderate levels of volatile compounds effectively. The large box fan is rather noisy, too. To reduce noise and energy consumption, some users have iterated on the design using multiple compact PC fans instead of a single large box fan to draw in air. However, we haven't built such a unit and can't verify if it'll perform similarly.
This basic iteration of a Corsi-Rosenthal Box handily outperforms most other consumer air purifiers on the market, with a sky-high clean air delivery rate and exceptional particle filtration. However, you'll need to dispose of the filters at the end of their useful lifetime. Depending on how often you use the unit, that can be as little as three months, which means it incurs a higher financial and time investment in the long run compared to most conventional consumer units.

What to Consider When Buying A Large Room Air Purifier
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) And Coverage
Generally speaking, when considering an air purifier for large room use, it's best to measure the size of your own space, so you don't end up with too little performance for your needs. If you're looking at our reviews to help make that choice, pay close attention to the 'Particle Filtration Rate' test, particularly the 'Recommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed' field.
- 180-220 ft2: Very large primary bedrooms, or smaller living rooms.
- 250-350 ft2: Medium-sized living or dining room.
- 375-450 ft2: Large living rooms, or open-concept combined living and dining areas
- 500-650 ft2: Whole studio apartments.
- 700-950 ft2: Smaller open-concept basements
- 1000 ft2 or more: Medium-sized basements.
Performance at lower, quieter fan speeds typically isn't as important in this particular use case, as larger rooms typically give you the latitude to keep your air purifier further away from you. That said, it's still worth paying attention to the same metric within the 'Low-Noise Particle Filtration Rate' test if you plan on setting up your air purifier in a TV room or dining area, where you'd plan on entertaining guests with less disruption.
Features
There are a few features that are especially nice to have if you're shopping for a bedroom air purifier:
-
Air Quality Sensor Auto Mode
- This allows the air purifier to automatically adjust its fan speed setting in real time, without forcing you to fiddle with its onboard controls or a remote control, which is handy if air quality in your home takes a dive while you're asleep or away from home.
-
Remote Control/App
- An included remote control or a smartphone companion app also allows you to operate the unit without having to walk over to it.
- Display Off Functionality
- This feature isn't strictly necessary, but can be handy if you have your air purifier set up in a home theater and would like to avoid any bright indicator lights taking up some of your attention.
