The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max is a compact tower-style air purifier designed for small to medium-sized spaces, such as bedrooms, home offices, dorm rooms, and living rooms. It uses Blueair's HEPASilent filtration system, which combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration within a single cylindrical filter to capture airborne particles. The filter also includes an activated carbon layer intended to help reduce common household odors. A built-in air quality sensor monitors particle levels and automatically adjusts fan speed, and the purifier supports Wi-Fi connectivity for control via the Blueair smartphone app. Like many Blueair models, it also offers interchangeable fabric pre-filters in a variety of colors, allowing you to better match the purifier to your room's decor.

Our Verdict

7.4
Pets

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max is a decent choice for pet owners looking to improve air quality in a bedroom, home office, or other small- to medium-sized room. It can help reduce airborne pet dander, fur, and dust before they have a chance to accumulate, and it's very quiet while running, even at higher fan speeds, so you don't need to worry about startling noise-sensitive pets. The built-in air quality sensor, Auto Mode, and companion app also allow it to respond automatically to changing conditions and make adjustments without requiring much day-to-day attention. That said, if you have multiple shedding cats or dogs, or you're trying to clean the air in a large open living space, its lower airflow means it won't reduce airborne particles as quickly as a larger purifier.

Pros
  • App expands functionality and provides remote monitoring.

  • Exceptionally quiet operation at lower fan speeds makes it unobstrusive to run continuously.

Cons
  • Maximum clean air delivery rate is insufficient for bigger spaces.

8.3
Bedroom

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max is a great fit for bedrooms, particularly small- to medium-sized ones, where its particle filtration is most effective. Its compact footprint makes it easy to place on a nightstand, dresser, or shelf without crowding your space, and its exceptional noise performance means you can leave it running overnight without it becoming a distraction. For added convenience, it also includes a dedicated Night Mode that lowers the fan speed and turns off the display lights to help minimize disruptions while you sleep. The built-in air quality sensor, Auto Mode, and companion app further enhance usability, letting you monitor air quality, adjust settings, create schedules, or turn the purifier on before bed without getting out of bed. That said, its airflow isn't suited to bigger spaces, so larger primary bedrooms may take longer to reach the same level of air quality improvement.

Pros
  • App expands functionality and provides remote monitoring.

  • Exceptionally quiet operation at lower fan speeds makes it unobstrusive to run continuously.

  • Compact footprint.

  • Quiet operation with dedicated night mode.

Cons
  • Maximum clean air delivery rate is insufficient for bigger spaces.

7.0
Particle Filtration Rate

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max has a decent particle filtration rate, removing airborne particles at a reasonable pace in small- to medium-sized spaces. It can effectively maintain air quality in rooms of this size, but its lower airflow means it won't clean the air as quickly as larger purifiers. In bigger or more open spaces, it will struggle to keep up, particularly at lower fan settings where airflow is reduced in favor of quieter operation.

    Popular Air Purifier Comparisons

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max serves as the entry point to Blueair's i Max lineup, prioritizing a smaller footprint and quieter operation over the higher airflow offered by larger models in the series. It sits in a similar niche to the Levoit Core 300S, with both offering a comparable feature set and room coverage, though the Blueair 511i Max runs quieter at lower fan speeds while the Levoit delivers slightly stronger particle filtration and a wider range of specialty replacement filters. The Blueair is also positioned similarly to the Dyson HushJet, with both serving as the smallest air purifiers in their respective manufacturers' lineups. However, the Dyson is a considerably more expensive product despite offering a broadly similar feature set and overall air-cleaning performance. As a result, the Blueair is the more compelling value option for small- and medium-sized rooms. That focus on compactness and quiet operation does come at a cost, however, and larger spaces are better served by higher-output alternatives like the Winix C610.

    Levoit Core 300S

    Track

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max is the better pick over the Levoit Core 300S if you want a compact purifier that can clean the air more quickly without becoming intrusive. Both models are built for small- to medium-sized rooms and share a similar feature set, including app connectivity, air quality monitoring, and automatic fan adjustment, but they approach performance a little differently. The Blueair prioritizes higher airflow and lower noise at maximum fan speed, so you can push it harder when particle levels rise without it becoming as noticeable in the room. The Levoit, on the other hand, holds onto more of its filtration performance at quieter settings, which means you don't have to increase fan speed as often to keep up. It also offers a wider selection of specialty replacement filters and more to work with in terms of onboard controls.

    Dyson HushJet

    Track

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max and the Dyson Hushjet are very similarly performing air purifiers overall. The Blueair's main appeal is that it delivers a very similar feature set and overall experience at a more accessible price, while the Dyson's quieter operation gives it a narrow edge for those who prioritize that above all else. Both are compact, app-enabled models and the smallest in their respective manufacturers' lineups, with a cylindrical 360-degree filter design suited to bedrooms, home offices, and other smaller spaces. The Blueair is the more compact of the two, taking up less space on nearby furniture. Both are whisper-quiet at lower fan settings, though the Dyson holds a slight edge in noise performance. The Blueair, meanwhile, offers slightly higher airflow at maximum fan speed. For most people, however, the overall differences are minor.

    Winix C610

    Track

The Winix C610 is the better overall choice than the Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max. While both offer app connectivity, automatic fan adjustment, air quality monitoring, and cylindrical filter designs, the Winix delivers substantially stronger air-cleaning performance. Its higher CADR allows it to maintain air quality more effectively in medium-sized rooms and larger living spaces where the Blueair begins to reach its limits. Despite its stronger performance, the Winix remains compact enough for a bedroom corner or beside furniture, though it is still noticeably larger than the Blueair. The 511i Max's main advantage is noise performance; it stays quieter across its fan range and is less disruptive at maximum speed. However, if air-cleaning performance is the priority, the Winix's higher airflow and broader room coverage make it the clear winner.

    • Blue: Excellent
    • Green: Good
    • Yellow: Moderate
    • Orange: Polluted
    • Red: Very Polluted

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max keeps things simple with a two-button control scheme and dedicated indicators for Auto Mode, Night Mode, fan speed, Wi-Fi status, and filter replacement. Auto Mode automatically adjusts fan speed based on current air quality conditions, while Night Mode drops to the lowest fan speed and turns off all display lights for undisturbed sleep. There is no physical remote, but the Blueair app covers the rest, giving you access to air quality monitoring, scheduling, timers, and remote control via your smartphone. Display brightness can also be adjusted manually outside of Night Mode, including turning it off completely. A filter replacement indicator lets you know when it is time to swap out the main filter.

    Filter Configuration
    Filtration Layers
    3 Stage
    Activated Carbon
    Sheet

The Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max uses a three-stage physical filtration system made up of a washable fabric pre-filter, a combined particle filter, and an activated carbon layer intended to help reduce household odors and other airborne pollutants. Blueair markets this as a four-stage system, but the fourth stage refers to its HEPASilent technology, which combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration rather than adding a separate physical filter layer. Unlike some competing purifiers that use dedicated HEPA filters, Blueair's filter is not HEPA-certified, though the company claims it can capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns.

The fabric pre-filter wraps around the exterior of the unit and is designed to catch larger debris before it reaches the main filter. Blueair recommends vacuuming it regularly and washing it as needed, following the care instructions on the fabric tag. The main Particle + Carbon filter is not washable and will need to be replaced over time, with Blueair estimating a lifespan of up to nine months depending on fan speed, usage, and air quality conditions. In addition to the standard filter, Blueair also offers SmokeBlock and AllergenBlock replacement options, allowing users to tailor the purifier toward smoke, odors, or allergen-focused filtration. Replacement filters for the Blueair 511i Max can be purchased directly from Blueair.

Like many compact purifiers, the Blueair uses a relatively thin activated carbon layer rather than a dense bed of carbon pellets, which limits its ability to absorb odors and gaseous pollutants compared to models with larger carbon filters. It is worth keeping in mind that activated carbon filters generally need a significant amount of carbon material to have a meaningful impact on odors and gaseous contaminants. You can read more about that in our air purifier performance research.

    Performance
    7.0
    Particle Filtration Rate
    Measured PM1.0 CADR
    255 m³/hr (150 CFM)
Recommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed
    21.8 m² (234 ft²)

This unit's particle filtration rate is decent, and it's capable of steadily reducing airborne particles and maintaining good air quality in small- to medium-sized rooms during everyday use. It's a natural fit for bedrooms, home offices, nurseries, and smaller living areas. It can still improve air quality in larger rooms, but it will take longer to bring particle levels down and fully cycle the air. This is especially noticeable after activities that increase particle levels, such as changing bedsheets, brushing a pet, or tracking outdoor allergens into the home.

    5.7
    Low-Noise Particle Filtration Rate
    Measured PM1.0 CADR
    99 m³/hr (59 CFM)
    Fan Speed Used
    Speed 2
    Recommended Room Size
    8.5 m² (91 ft²)

The low-noise particle filtration rate on the Blueair 511i Max is disappointing. While the purifier stays exceptionally quiet at its lower settings, effective coverage drops to roughly 40% of what it can achieve at maximum fan speed, making it best suited to very small spaces like a nursery, compact bedroom, or small home office. In larger rooms, airborne particles will take considerably longer to clear, particularly after activities that stir up dust, pet dander, or outdoor allergens. Keeping up with air quality in medium-sized spaces will mean bumping up the fan speed, which brings faster particle removal but higher noise.

    9.0
    Noise
    Noise @ Lowest Fan Speed
    30.8dBA
    Noise @ Highest Fan Speed
    53.9dBA

This air purifier operates very quietly. At its lower fan settings, operating noise fades into the background of a quiet room, making it easy to leave running throughout the day or overnight without drawing attention to itself. Even at its highest fan speed, noise levels remain well controlled and are unlikely to overpower nearby conversations, TV audio, or other everyday activities. As a result, you don't have to choose between quieter operation and stronger air-cleaning performance as often as you might with many competing purifiers.
