The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX is an air purifier intended for large to medium-sized rooms. Its headline feature is the eponymous 'NeverChange' filter system, which the manufacturer claims can last up to 5 years without replacement, reducing ownership costs and easing maintenance requirements. It also has an odor-neutralizing cartridge that emits a detergent-like scent. This air purifier features the brand's Clean Sense IQ system, which monitors air quality in real time and adjusts the fan speed accordingly.

Our Verdict

7.5
Pets

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX is a good option for pet owners. It does a good job capturing the finest of airborne particles, like pet dander. It has a replaceable cartridge that emits a detergent-like scent to mask pet odors as it operates, though it's worth noting that this scent can become overwhelming quickly. Unfortunately, this air purifier is pretty loud, especially at higher settings.

Pros
  • Filter system won't need to be replaced often.
  • Automatic fan speed adjustment feature.
  • CADR is sufficient for medium-sized spaces.

Cons
  • Quite loud at higher fan speeds.
7.3
Bedroom

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX is only decent for use in bedrooms. It's somewhat bulky and louder than many alternatives, especially at higher fan speeds. Thankfully, you can easily turn off its display, so there won't be any bright lights you need to cover up when trying to get some rest.

Pros
  • Filter system won't need to be replaced often.
  • Automatic fan speed adjustment feature.
  • CADR is sufficient for medium-sized spaces.

Cons
  • Quite loud at higher fan speeds.
  • No remote operation.
7.6
Particle Filtration Rate

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302 has a good particle filtration rate. It'll need to run at its max fan speed setting constantly for it to clear especially big spaces all by itself, like an entire open-concept apartment. With that said, it's well-suited for slightly smaller areas like living rooms, dining areas, or larger bedrooms and offices.

Pros
  • CADR is sufficient for medium-sized spaces.

Cons
  • Quite loud at higher fan speeds.

    1.  Updated Feb 11, 2026:

We've updated the text in this review to reflect new tests added with version 1.1 of our test bench.

    2.  Updated Feb 11, 2026: Version 1.1 of our air purifier testing methodology provides a more representative summary of unit performance, with a revised Particle Filtration Rate test conducted in a better-sealed environment and a more reliable means of generating consistently sized particulate matter. We've also included a parameter for the machine's maximum recommended room size. For a more detailed breakdown of the changes made, see our full changelog.
    3.  Updated Nov 04, 2025: Version 1.0.2 of our Air Purifier Test Bench rectifies calculation errors in our existing Particle Filtration Rate test to provide more representative results of some units. For a more detailed breakdown of the changes made, see our full changelog.
    4.  Updated Nov 21, 2024:

Added the Shark UA1450 variant to the Differences Between Variants section of the review.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

There are three variants of this air purifier, though they differ only in color: the HP301 (Gray), HP302 (White), and HP305 (Black). There's also the Costco-specific UA1450 variant, which comes with two odor-neutralizing cartridges and a remote control. We tested the HP302 (White) model; you can see its label.

Let us know in the comments if you come across another variant.

    Popular Air Purifier Comparisons

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX is a mid-range air purifier with unique features. This model offers lower ownership costs than most of its peers, thanks to its exceptionally long-lasting filter system. Its Clean Sense IQ particle detection system and corresponding automatic fan speed adjustment aren't as unique a selling point, as many other alternatives offer similar functionality. Still, it's certainly a welcome addition nonetheless. Unfortunately, it's quite loud, and there's no way to operate the device remotely other than with a remote control sold separately.

While not included with the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX itself, Shark also sells a remote control that lets you operate the air purifier without having to get up close to it. You can purchase this remote here.

There are three display brightness levels you can cycle through by tapping the 'Light' icon: fully off, mid brightness, and full brightness.

The indicator light surrounding the central display changes color depending on the estimate of current air quality:

    • Blue: Good
    • Orange: Fair
    • Red: Poor

You can also cycle through this display to show the concentration of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 particles in the air.

    Filter Configuration
    Filtration Layers
    3 Stage
    Activated Carbon
    Sheet

This air purifier has a three-stage filter system comprised of a Mesh Dust pre-filter and a HEPA filter with a Virgin Carbon layer for minimizing odors.

As per the manufacturer, you'll need to clean the pre-filter under water or with a vacuum whenever you notice it getting dirty, though no specific maintenance interval is specified. On the upside, you'll be alerted when the pre-filter needs cleaning or replacement: the air quality indicator ring will flash red, and the central display will show a 'Check Dust Filters' message. If you wash the pre-filter under water, let it dry for at least 12 hours before reinstalling it. The manufacturer also recommends vacuuming or dusting the exterior of the HEPA filter every 2 months.

The HEPA filter has a manufacturer-estimated lifespan of 5 years, though this can vary depending on how often and where you use the air purifier. In any case, this is a significantly longer service life than the filters found in most other air purifiers, like the Levoit Core 600S, which needs to have its filter changed every year or so. You can find a replacement here.

This air purifier also features a replaceable cartridge that emits a detergent-like scent to mask foul odors. You can adjust the intensity of this scent by twisting the cartridge dial, as explained in the user manual here. This feature is very similar in concept to the system found in newer Shark vacuum cleaners like the Shark Stratos Cordless. As with those vacuums, this scent can quickly become cloying, especially if you crank the dial to its maximum intensity for hours. The manufacturer recommends replacing the scent cartridge every three months; you can buy a replacement here.

Recommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed
    36.3 m² (391 ft²)

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302's maximum particle filtration rate is good. At its highest fan speed, it'll easily handle air exchanges in medium-sized spaces like living rooms or dining areas, as well as larger offices and bedrooms. That said, it isn't an efficient option for anything larger than that, so you might want to buy an extra unit or go for something with a higher capacity for especially large areas like open-concept apartments or living areas.

    Noise
    Noise @ Lowest Fan Speed
    33.8dBA
    Noise @ Highest Fan Speed
    60.1dBA

This is a decently quiet unit overall. At its lowest fan speed, the HP302's operating noise can mostly be masked by a nearby TV playing at a normal volume. While it's far from the loudest option on the market at its highest fan speed, the fan speed reaches a deeper, higher register, which can be distracting if you have it set up nearby while you're trying to sleep.
