The Winix C909 is a Costco-exclusive air purifier designed for medium- to large-sized spaces. It uses a True HEPA filter to capture fine airborne particles, an activated carbon filter to help reduce everyday household odors, and Winix's PlasmaWave ionization technology, which can be turned off if you prefer. It also features Wi-Fi connectivity through the Winix companion app and a built-in air quality sensor that can automatically adjust fan speed as air quality changes.
Our Verdict
The Winix C909 is a great choice for pet owners. Its True HEPA filter, combined with its high clean air delivery rate, allows it to quickly remove pet dander, fur, and other airborne allergens, helping keep your home feeling fresher even during heavy shedding seasons. It also includes an Activated Carbon filter that can help reduce everyday pet odors, though it's unlikely to make a significant difference with stronger or more persistent smells. Despite its strong cleaning performance, it stays fairly quiet at lower fan speeds, so you can leave it running throughout the day without being too disruptive to noise-sensitive pets. One thing to keep in mind is that it also features Winix's PlasmaWave ionization system. While it's intended to improve particle removal and produce ozone levels within established safety limits according to the manufacturer, some pets can be more sensitive to ozone. If that's a concern, the PlasmaWave feature can be turned off.
High clean air delivery rate helps clean larger spaces quickly.
Maintains good air cleaning performance at lower fan speeds.
Operates quietly.
The Winix C909 is a very good choice for bedrooms of all sizes. Its Sleep mode runs quietly enough that it's unlikely to disturb your sleep. If you prefer to adjust settings without getting out of bed, the Winix companion app also lets you control the purifier remotely, monitor air quality, and switch between operating modes on your phone. In Sleep mode, the purifier turns off most of its indicator lights, though a dim Sleep indicator remains illuminated, which may still be noticeable if you prefer a completely dark bedroom.
High clean air delivery rate helps clean larger spaces quickly.
Maintains good air cleaning performance at lower fan speeds.
Narrow profile makes it easy to place against a wall.
Wi-Fi app allows convenient control without getting out of bed.
Operates quietly.
Large overall footprint takes up a noticeable amount of floor space.
The Winix C909 delivers great particle filtration performance. At its highest fan speed, it can clear the air in large rooms within a relatively short amount of time, making it a good choice for busy living spaces where dust, pollen, and other airborne particles can build up throughout the day. It also retains much of that cleaning performance at lower fan speeds, so you don't always have to choose between cleaner air and a quieter room.
High clean air delivery rate helps clean larger spaces quickly.
Maintains good air cleaning performance at lower fan speeds.
The Winix C909 is on the larger side. While its relatively narrow design makes it easy to position against a wall, it's noticeably deeper and taller than many other air purifiers, so it takes up a fair amount of floor space. It's a better fit for larger rooms where its size is less noticeable than it would be in smaller bedrooms, home offices, or apartments where every bit of floor space counts.

Popular Air Purifier Comparisons
The Winix C909 is a Costco-exclusive air purifier designed for medium- to large-sized spaces. It offers strong air-cleaning performance alongside convenient features like Wi-Fi connectivity, automatic fan adjustment, and Winix's PlasmaWave ionization system. Compared to the smaller Winix C545, it delivers noticeably stronger air-cleaning performance and broader room coverage while retaining the same companion app experience. It also stacks up well against the similarly sized Levoit Vital 200S, offering higher airflow for larger spaces, though the Levoit has a more pet-focused design with its U-shaped inlet that's better suited for homes with shedding pets. If maximum air-cleaning performance is your priority, the Coway Airmega 400 remains the stronger choice thanks to its substantially higher clean air delivery rate, though it lacks the C909's smartphone app support.

The Winix C909 is a better air purifier than the Winix C545. Both models offer Wi-Fi connectivity, automatic fan adjustment, and Winix's PlasmaWave ionization technology, but the C909 delivers substantially stronger air-cleaning performance and broader room coverage. It also maintains more of that performance at quieter fan speeds, making it the better choice for larger bedrooms and living spaces. The C545's main advantage is its smaller footprint, making it easier to fit into tighter spaces.
The Winix C909 is a better air purifier than the Winix 5500-2. While both models feature automatic fan adjustment and Winix's PlasmaWave ionization technology, the C909 delivers noticeably higher clean air delivery rates and is better suited for larger rooms. It also adds Wi-Fi connectivity through the Winix companion app, allowing you to monitor air quality, adjust settings, and create schedules remotely. The 5500-2's main advantages are its included remote control and its pelletized activated carbon filter, which offers a larger surface area than the C909's thin carbon sheet, though neither contains enough activated carbon to make a substantial difference with persistent household odors.
The Winix C909 is a better air purifier than the Levoit Vital 200S for most people. Both offer smartphone app connectivity, automatic fan adjustment, and strong overall air-cleaning performance, but the C909 delivers considerably higher airflow, allowing it to clean larger rooms more quickly while maintaining better performance at quieter fan speeds. On the other hand, the Vital 200S has a few practical advantages for pet owners, including a washable pre-filter, a U-shaped intake that's designed to resist pet hair clogs, and optional replacement filters tailored for pet owners and smoke removal.
The Coway Airmega 400 is a better air purifier than the Winix C909. The Coway delivers stronger particle filtration performance and significantly higher airflow, making it the better choice for very large living rooms, open-concept spaces, and other expansive areas. It also uses pelletized activated carbon rather than a thin carbon sheet, which should give it an advantage in odor reduction. The Winix counters with Wi-Fi connectivity, remote app control, scheduling, and air quality monitoring, all of which are missing on the standard Airmega 400.

The Winix C909 can also be controlled through the Winix Smart companion app, which lets you adjust fan speed, switch between operating modes, monitor air quality, and create schedules remotely. It's worth noting that the timer function is only available through the app, as there's no way to set one directly on the purifier itself. When Sleep mode is enabled, the purifier automatically lowers the fan speed to its quietest setting and disables the PlasmaWave ionization system by default. One small limitation is that the filter replacement indicator only monitors the True HEPA filter, so you'll need to keep track of the recommended cleaning and replacement intervals for the pre-filter and activated carbon filter yourself.
The Winix C909 is advertised as having a four-stage filtration system, though it is actually a three-stage physical filter system paired with its PlasmaWave ionization technology. It consists of a washable Pre-Filter, an Activated Carbon filter intended to reduce household odors, and a True HEPA filter for capturing fine airborne particles like dust, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander. As with many air purifiers, the relatively small amount of activated carbon is unlikely to make a significant difference with persistent or heavy odors. Like other ionization systems, PlasmaWave produces a small amount of ozone during operation, which may be a concern for people with respiratory sensitivities. Winix states that ozone emissions remain well below the generally accepted safety limit of 0.05 ppm, and the PlasmaWave feature can be turned off independently if preferred.
The Pre-Filter should be cleaned every two weeks, the Activated Carbon filter replaced every three months, and the True HEPA filter replaced approximately once a year. Replacement filters are available through Winix's website.
