The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS is a mid-range 36-inch standard-depth side-by-side refrigerator. It has an in-freezer ice maker, an in-door water and ice dispenser with an ice-crushing function, and a refrigerator cabinet with two crisper drawers and a trio of movable shelves. Its cooling system is fairly standard, with a single evaporator and an inverter-controlled compressor, along with Frigidaire's 'EvenTemp' system, which the brand claims will ensure consistent airflow throughout the fridge and freezer cabinets.

How We Test Refrigerators

We've recently started testing refrigerators. We independently purchase each unit from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free from manufacturer influence. Each refrigerator goes through the same tests to measure objective data for metrics like temperature uniformity, produce preservation, and actual storage capacity so you can easily compare the results.

Our Verdict

7.2
Everyday Use

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS is a decent choice for everyday use. Its fridge compartment is narrow but deep and tall, making it a solid option if you frequently buy taller items like fresh herbs or wine bottles. The freezer storage is unfortunately compromised by its built-in ice maker, though it's worth noting that temperatures inside that compartment are exceptionally consistent. Sadly, temperature uniformity inside the fridge is only passable, as the upper shelves and door bins are a little warmer than the lower section of the main cabinet, which is where you should store more temperature-sensitive items like milk or cream. Produce preservation performance isn't a massive strong point either, with somewhat low moisture retention inside the crisper drawers that can cause some delicate produce to wilt prematurely.

Pros
  • Fantastic temperature consistency within freezer cabinet.

  • Fridge and freezer cabinets are quite deep and tall.

Cons
  • Upper shelves and door bins are warmer than main cabinet.

  • In-freezer ice maker takes up a lot of room.

  • Crisper drawers don't retain much humidity, causing delicate produce to dry out and wilt.

6.3
Produce Preservation

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS's produce preservation performance is mediocre. Its crisper drawers don't hold in a lot of humidity, and delicate produce like spinach or celery will lose moisture and begin wilting somewhat quickly. The same goes for the main cabinet, which is a dry environment in which delicate produce will lose its crunch even faster.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Crisper drawers don't retain much humidity, causing delicate produce to dry out and wilt.

8.2
Refrigerator Capacity

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS boasts impressive overall capacity inside its fridge cabinet. As a side-by-side unit, the compartment is expectedly quite narrow, but it's deep enough to accommodate bulkier items like casserole dishes. It has a trio of movable shelves, which gives you a lot of flexibility to fit in taller items like narrow-necked bottles, too. That said, it isn't ideal: there's no deli drawer, and the crisper drawers don't hold all that much.

Pros
  • Fridge and freezer cabinets are quite deep and tall.

Cons
  • Narrow fridge and freezer cabinets.

7.8
Freezer Capacity

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS is very good for storing large amounts of frozen food. While its in-freezer ice maker takes up a lot of room along the top half of the freezer cabinet, the lower section is fairly deep, allowing you to squeeze in bulky items like frozen dinners or family-sized packs of burgers or chicken filets.

Pros
  • Fridge and freezer cabinets are quite deep and tall.

Cons
  • In-freezer ice maker takes up a lot of room.

  • Narrow fridge and freezer cabinets.

7.8
Temperature Uniformity

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS's temperature uniformity is something of a mixed bag. Temperatures inside the freezer are exceptionally consistent, so temperature-sensitive foodstuffs like ice cream won't be soft if stored on one shelf and frozen to a brick-like consistency if you leave it on another. The fridge's inverter-controlled compressor also helps minimize swings in temperature inside this cabinet during normal operating conditions. However, the picture is much less rosy in the fridge compartment. Despite the presence of the brand's 'EvenTemp' cooling system, which should evenly distribute cool air throughout the cabinet, the refrigerator's upper shelves and door bins tend to be a few degrees higher than the rest of the cabinet.

Pros
  • Fantastic temperature consistency within freezer cabinet.

Cons
  • Upper shelves and door bins are warmer than main cabinet.

8.1
Ice Making

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS is a great option for making ice for a crowd. Its ice production rate isn't earth-shattering by any means: it can put out a little over three pounds of ice in a 24-hour window, which should be enough for a small family dinner, but not much beyond that. That said, its ice bucket can hold over eight pounds of cubed ice, which should be enough to keep quite a few drinks cool at a moderately sized barbecue or house party before you need to head out and buy a bag of ice.

Pros
  • High-capacity ice bucket.

  • Good ice production rate.

Cons
None

    Popular Refrigerator Comparisons

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS is a mid-range 36-inch side-by-side refrigerator. It isn't much of a standout in any one category, aside from its relatively high-capacity ice bucket. Alternatives like the Samsung RS27T5200SR offer more interior volume in both their fridge and freezer cabinets, all the while occupying the same footprint. It doesn't do a great job of maintaining a consistent temperature level within its fridge cabinet when compared to the Whirlpool WRS588FIHZ, either, though the Frigidaire does at least deliver great freezer temperature consistency.

This unit provides an impressive amount of room in its refrigerator compartment. In terms of actual volume, it's nearly identical to that of the similarly sized Whirlpool WRS588FIHZ, though it achieves that with a deeper, taller, yet narrower cabinet. As far as side-by-side models go, fitting bulkier items inside is pretty simple, and the cabinet can easily accommodate taller items like fresh herbs, especially if you're willing to move some of its shelves around.

You're lacking a little bit of bin space compared to some alternatives, with no pull-out deli drawer and somewhat shallow crisper drawers: if you frequently buy a lot of fresh fruit and veggies, this can be a nuisance. Conversely, the door bins are very generous in terms of capacity, with four movable ones that are big enough to hold bulky items like milk jugs, and a closable bin on top for storing butter.

    Advertised Freezer Volume
    9.0 cu. ft. (254.8 L)
    Usable Freezer Volume
    5.2 cu. ft. (146.1 L)

The freezer volume is good for the most part, but nowhere near class-leading. You can fit smaller meal-prep containers on the shelves fairly easily, along with individual-sized boxes of frozen meals. That said, the space is a few inches shallower and narrower than similarly sized alternatives, and you'll run into some trouble when trying to squeeze in bulkier boxed goods.

Unlike alternatives such as the Whirlpool WRS588FIHZ and the Samsung RS27T5200SR, the ice maker resides within the main freezer cabinet, drastically cutting down on space in the top third of this section. This doesn't claw back much room in the door compared to those aforementioned models with in-door ice makers either, since the chute for the in-door ice dispenser takes up a fair amount of room there too.

Removing the ice bucket frees up a lot of room, with overall storage capacity increasing to 5.87 cu ft (166.13 L) with the bucket removed. Still, this has less capacity than what the Samsung RS27T5200SR offers.

    Cooling System
    Evaporator Configuration
    Single Evaporator
    Compressor Configuration
    Single Compressor
    Compressor Type
    Inverter

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS uses an inverter-controlled compressor and a single evaporator in its freezer, a very standard arrangement for a fridge in this price bracket. On paper, an inverter compressor like this one will consume less energy than a fixed-speed compressor, as the former can adjust its speed to match the required cooling load instead of cycling on and off constantly to maintain a setpoint. That said, inverter compressors do introduce a layer of complexity in the form of a control board and introduce a potentially costly failure point.

    Ice Maker
    Ice Maker
    Freezer Compartment
    Ice Maker Type
    Twist-Tray

This unit has a twist-tray style ice maker. These systems work in a fairly simple fashion: water freezes inside a plastic mold, which a motor twists to deform the mold and pop the ice out into a tray. However, the flexible plastic mold can become brittle from regular thermal cycling and mechanical stress, and can eventually crack.

As with any in-door ice maker, it'd be a good idea to dump out the ice bucket if you lose power, shut off the fridge, or expect the unit to be powered off for a while, as ice can melt and leak out of the dispenser.

    Water Dispenser
    Water Dispenser
    In-Door

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS has a combination filtered water and ice dispenser built into its freezer door. Unlike the Samsung RS27T5200SR, there's a built-in light when triggering the dispenser, making it easier to gauge how full your glass or pitcher is at a glance. It's worth noting that the water filter status light is only visible when opening the fridge compartment door.

The ice dispenser also has an ice crushing function, though most chunks are still fairly large.

    Refrigerator Shelf Gradient
    4.3 °F (2.4 °C)
    Door Bin Offset
    2.6 °F (1.4 °C)

This fridge's temperature uniformity performance is mediocre overall. There's a pronounced increase in temperature from the bottom to the top shelf, so we wouldn't advise placing temperature-sensitive items along the top, like milk or sour cream. The same goes for the door bins, which trend warmer than the rest of the cabinet, though at the very least remain within a small handful of degrees from one another: they're best used for chilling juice or soft drinks.

    9.1
    Freezer Temperature Uniformity

    Freezer Gradient
    2.0 °F (1.1 °C)

Temperature uniformity within the freezer is fantastic. There's no noticeable difference in temperature from the top to the bottom shelf, so you won't need to worry about items like ice cream being too soft if left on one shelf or frozen rock-solid and freezer-burned if left on another. This unit's inverter-controlled compressor also helps to minimize temperature swings in normal operation.

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS's produce preservation performance is okay. It retains more moisture inside its crisper drawers than alternatives like the Whirlpool WRS588FIHZ, which helps to keep delicate greens from wilting, though it's far from class-leading in this respect: the dual-evaporator KitchenAid KRSC703HPS can maintain an even higher degree of humidity in its fridge cabinet and crisper drawers. In the case of this Fridgidaire, expect to begin seeing wilting in especially delicate greens in a little over a week or so.

    Ice Maker Rate
    24-Hour Ice Production
    1,499 g (3.30 lbs)

This refrigerator's 24-hour ice production rate is good. It'll do fine if all you're planning is a moderately sized family dinner with iced drinks on the side. If you're hosting anything bigger than that, you'll want to fill a bag with ice well in advance.

    8.6
    Ice Maker Capacity
    Max Ice Maker Capacity3,775 g (8.32 lbs)

The Frigidaire FRSS2623AS's ice bucket is amazingly big for a household unit. It can hold a lot more than other in-door ice buckets, like the one found in the Samsung RS27T5200SR, and can supply enough ice for making drinks at a backyard barbecue or smaller cocktail party, without you having to go out and fetch a big bag of ice.
