The Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro is a very large toaster oven-style air fryer with enough capacity to serve a crowd. The main selling point of this unit is the connectivity it offers. You can scroll through recipes in the companion app, then send the settings straight to the air fryer or use voice activation through Google Assistant or Alexa to start baking without pressing a button. There's also a feature Breville calls 'Joule Autopilot' that automates multi-step cooking procedures, so the air fryer can automatically switch from proof to bake when making croissants or bake to broil when cooking a casserole. We'll also be testing this unit on our toaster oven Test Bench 1.0; be sure to check back if you're interested in seeing how it performs.
Our Verdict
The Breville Joule Oven works reasonably well as an air fryer. It makes decent-quality fried food, so the majority of each batch comes out crispy and well-browned, but a smaller portion remains undercooked, and a few pieces wind up burnt as well. Unfortunately, it preheats and cooks slowly, likely due to its large capacity, so you'll have to wait a little while for crispy meals and snacks. It provides excellent versatility, with a very wide range of temperature settings and fan speeds, along with 10 presets for different cooking modes. You'll also find additional settings on the appliance and in its companion app, such as 'Frozen,' which adjusts the time and/or temperature depending on the chosen preset, and 'Autopilot,' which automatically switches between cooking modes based on a chosen recipe. That said, it's worth noting that some of its features are only available through the Breville+ companion app.
Makes decent-quality fried food.
Provides excellent versatility.
Preheats and cooks slowly.
The Breville Joule Oven is an excellent choice for large-batch cooking. It has an extremely large 23.2-quart capacity, which is much larger than even the largest basket-style air fryers. This design allows for plenty of cooking surface area, too, so it's easy to spread food out for better results. It provides decent results for air fryer classics like fries, onion rings, and veggies; more than half of each batch comes out crispy, with a smaller portion left undercooked and a few pieces burnt. This air fryer offers excellent versatility, too. It has a wider range of temperature and fan speed settings than most air fryers, with a particularly high maximum temperature of 480 °F (249 °C). It has 10 preset cooking modes and additional settings, including 'Frozen,' 'Convection,' and 'Super Convection,' which adjust the time, temperature, and/or fan speed according to the selected preset. Unfortunately, this air fryer cooks quite slowly, so if you plan to make multiple batches, it'll take a while.

Very large cooking capacity.
Lots of cooking surface area to spread food out.
Provides excellent versatility.
Bulky design.
The Breville Joule Oven offers decent frying performance. Its large surface area gives you lots of room to spread food out in a single layer, allowing for better airflow from its already powerful fan. It maintains a fairly stable temperature throughout, too, which helps produce decently even results. By the time the air fryer finishes cooking, more than half of the batch is crispy and golden-brown, but there's a smaller portion left mushy, as well as a few burnt pieces.

Preheats and cooks slowly.
The Breville Joule Oven provides a poor cooking speed. It preheats and cooks more slowly than most other air fryers.
Preheats and cooks slowly.
The Breville Joule Oven has a fantastic cooking capacity. This 23.2-quart air fryer is large enough to prepare full meals for the whole family, and there's plenty of cooking surface area, so you can easily spread food out for the best results.
Very large cooking capacity.
Lots of cooking surface area to spread food out.
The Breville Joule Oven is a very large air fryer, though that’s expected given its massive capacity. It’ll take up a lot of counterspace and won’t fit in most cupboards.
Bulky design.

Popular Air Fryer Comparisons
The Breville Joule is a high-end 23.2-quart air fryer that doubles as a countertop oven. It has some special features via the Breville+ companion app, like guided recipes and 'Autopilot,' which automatically switches between cooking functions based on your selected recipe. Compared to other high-end combination air fryers, it offers reasonable performance. It offers similar versatility to the Ninja Combi SFP701, for example, but while it cooks more slowly, the food produced is crispier and more evenly cooked. It's more versatile than the Dreo ChefMaker, but at the same time, the Dreo cooks faster and more evenly.
While some dedicated air fryers can cook more evenly, the biggest advantage they have compared to the Breville is speed. The Ninja Foodi DZ401, for example, produces decent-quality fried food, just like the Breville, but it finishes cooking more than 10 minutes faster. At the end of the day, however, the app-specific features will likely be the deciding factor for most people. If you appreciate guided recipes, Autopilot, and included cooking classes, this model might be for you. However, if you prefer more control over the cooking process, you might want something simpler, like the Breville the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900BSS, a similar model from the brand that we've tested under our toaster oven test bench.

The Ninja Foodi DZ401 is a better air fryer for most people than the Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro. Both appliances make decent-quality fried food and offer excellent versatility, but the Ninja preheats faster, cooks faster, and maintains a more stable temperature throughout the process. It also takes up less counter space. On the other hand, the Breville offers more capacity and more cooking surface area, so if you're making food for a crowd, you may prefer it. The Breville has some additional settings that are only available through their companion app, like 'Autopilot,' which automatically switches between cooking modes based on your recipe selection. You may find these features to be a benefit or drawback depending on whether you prefer to have assistance through guided recipes or full control over the cooking process.
The Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro and the Ninja Combi SFP701 are both air fryers that also advertise alternate functions. They have different strengths, and you may prefer one over the other based on your personal preferences. The Ninja Combi doubles as a combination cooker, with options like 'Steam' and 'Sous Vide,' though we've only tested its air fryer functions. Its main advantage over the Breville in this respect is speed, as it preheats and cooks faster. The Breville doubles as a countertop oven, with options like 'Toast,' 'Bagel,' and 'Keep Warm.' It comes out ahead for frying performance and excels when it comes to versatility. It also offers additional settings through the Breville+ companion app, like 'Autopilot,' which can automatically switch cooking modes based on a chosen recipe; however, we've only tested its air fryer functionality without the app.
The Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro and the Chefman Multifunctional Air Fryer+ are both large oven-style air fryers with reasonable overall performance. Beyond those similarities, however, they're very different, and you may prefer either depending on your needs. The Chefman is the more compact option, with a smaller 9.8-quart capacity to match. It preheats and cooks faster than the Breville and comes at a much more affordable price. The Breville, on the other hand, has a much larger 23.2-quart capacity and takes up significantly more counter space. It makes better-quality fried food and offers a lot more versatility, with a wider range of temperature and fan speed settings, as well as additional preset cooking modes. It also offers some connectivity features, including app support and a feature called ‘Autopilot,' which can automatically switch between cooking modes.
The Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro is a better choice than the Our Place Wonder Oven for most people. The Breville makes better-quality fried food, so more of each batch comes out crispy, and it has a larger capacity. It also offers more versatility; it has a wider range of fan speeds and temperature settings, as well as more preset cooking modes. On the other hand, the Our Place is smaller, and it preheats and cooks faster. It's worth noting that both of these appliances include some special features that could sway your decision. The Our Place features steam infusion, while the Breville offers a companion app with additional features like 'Autopilot,' which can automatically switch between cooking modes and guided recipes.

This toaster oven-style air fryer has an extremely large 23.2-quart capacity. Its design allows for plenty of surface area as well, much more than basket-style air fryers, so it's very easy to spread your food out in a single layer, which helps produce the best possible results. Neither the interior nor the air frying basket has a non-stick coating, but the pizza pan has a PTFE coating.

- Self-Cleaning Mode
- Autopilot: sets oven time and temperature as you scroll through recipes and automatically switches cooking modes based on the selected recipe
In the app, you can also find tips, guided recipes, cooking classes, firmware updates, and cleaning guides.
It makes decent-quality fried food. By the time it's finished cooking, more than half of the batch is crispy and well-browned, though about a third remains undercooked, while a few pieces are already burnt. Despite their similarities, it performs worse than the Breville the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900BSS for air frying; if you're more interested in air frying performance than connectivity features, you might prefer it.
It cooks very slowly. Despite its high maximum power draw and fan speed, it cooks more slowly than the Our Place Wonder Oven, which is a toaster oven-style air fryer with a lower maximum power draw and fan speed. This discrepancy is likely due to the Breville's very large capacity; at 23.2 quarts, it has more than triple the capacity of the 7-quart Our Place.
While you can find oven-style air fryers that cook faster, if speed is your priority, you may also want to consider basket-style air fryers. The COSORI Dual Blaze 6.8qt CAF-P583S, for example, cooks a 250g batch of French fries more than 10 minutes faster.
It takes a long time to preheat, much longer than most other air fryers. This is likely due to its very large capacity.
The Breville the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro provides very good temperature stability. It recovers quickly after you open the door to add food, returning to the set temperature in just a couple of minutes. The temperature fluctuates a bit during cooking, but not enough to make following recipes much more difficult.
