If counterspace is at a premium, you might be considering a small toaster oven. While the newest, most premium toaster ovens are often designed to replace a litany of kitchen appliances, including your toaster, air fryer, and even your full-size oven, more compact options tend to be simpler and often struggle with tasks like air frying.

As a general rule, the smaller a toaster oven is, the more trade-offs you'll discover, but even basic options can shine when you need a quick snack or just want a slice of toast. If you know what to look for, you can also find compact models packed with features that excel at air frying, baking, and broiling. For something simple that can handle toasting, reheating leftovers, and making the occasional batch of cookies, look for a toaster oven that preheats quickly, toasts quickly and evenly, and maintains a stable temperature while baking. If you want a more versatile option, look for a model that air fries quickly and evenly, and one with a wide temperature range, along with a powerful fan and broiler. The best small toaster oven for you is one that delivers strong performance for the features you actually need and fits comfortably in your space, without crowding your counter.

We've tested more than 25 models, and below are our recommendations for the best small toaster ovens. If you want to see what else is on the market or think a medium-sized oven would work better for you, check out our overview of the best toaster ovens. Or, if you plan to do a lot of air frying in your toaster oven, one of the best air fryer toaster ovens or best small air fryers might be a better fit.

  1. Best Small Toaster Oven

The best small toaster oven we've tested is the Ninja Flip SP151, thanks to its versatile performance and convenient design. It offers many of the features found in larger toaster ovens while saving space with a clever trick: you can flip it backward when not in use, freeing up counter space. This design gives it a wide cooking chamber that offers more surface area than many smaller toaster ovens, so it can fit an 11-inch frozen pizza or six slices of sandwich bread at once. The trade-off is that the cooking chamber doesn't have much vertical space, so something like a loaf pan might not fit. Overall, it's an impressive choice for multi-purpose use. It does a good job of evenly toasting four or six slices of bread at once, although it's not the fastest toaster. It also maintains a mostly stable temperature during cooking, which helps you get good results when baking.

This toaster oven can't quite match the performance of a good basket-style air fryer, but it works well for making crispy, golden-brown foods like fries and wings. It has a wide range of temperature settings, a powerful broiler, and while its fan isn't particularly powerful, it offers passable performance for air frying, roasting, and dehydrating. This combination gives this toaster oven good versatility, especially for a small model, making it an ideal choice if you want the functionality of a toaster, air fryer, oven, and dehydrator in a single compact model. Plus, it's often available at a significant discount, occasionally making it more affordable than our upper mid-range pick.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Small Toaster Oven

If you're willing to sacrifice a couple of features for a less premium price, the Breville the Mini Smart Oven is an impressive option. It has a smaller countertop footprint than the Ninja Flip SP151 and a taller cooking chamber with three rack positions, giving you more options for where to place your food and more vertical space for taller items, like muffins or ramekins of mac and cheese. You can even bake a couple of trays of cookies at once on different levels or fit an 11-inch pizza. The downside is that this small toaster oven isn't quite as versatile as the Ninja: it doesn't have an air fry feature or a fan for convection baking, so it won't work as well for your favorite crispy snacks like chicken wings.

With that caveat in mind, it offers a range of cooking modes for typical toaster-oven tasks, such as toasting, reheating, baking, and broiling. Thanks to its exceptionally stable temperature, this toaster oven is a fantastic choice for baking, since your brownies and scones are less likely to dry out or burn. It's also a good choice for toasting since it's faster than the Ninja, although it can only fit four slices of bread. It preheats quickly, too, so you don't have to wait long before popping in a quick snack or plate of leftovers.

  3. Best Mid-Range Small Toaster Oven

For small households with simple toasting and reheating needs, the Panasonic FlashXpress NB-G11OP offers a lot. It takes up significantly less space on your counter than the Breville the Mini Smart Oven, though it also has a smaller capacity. There's still space to bake a 9-inch pizza or toast four slices of bread at once, but there's just one rack position, so unlike the Breville, you can't use two trays at once. Like the Breville, the biggest trade-off with this option is its lack of versatility, but you might not mind if you just want a simple toaster oven. It doesn't have a fan, so you can't use it for air frying or convection baking, and it lacks a broil feature, making certain tasks, like browning the top of a tuna melt, trickier.

It can't toast as evenly as the picks above, but it still does a decent job, and it finishes toasting significantly faster. Preheating doesn't take quite as long either, so it's a good choice for leftovers and quick snacks. Throughout the cooking process, its temperature stays very stable, making it easy to follow recipes and ensuring baked goods don't dry out or burn too quickly. The timer tops out at 25 minutes, and there's no 'Stay On' option, like some other small models, which can be a bit inconvenient.

  4. Best Budget Small Toaster Oven

The Black+Decker Natural Convection 4-Slice TO1756SB may not be the most exciting toaster oven on the market, but if you're looking for a compact option at a budget-friendly price, it's a solid pick. It's a simple model that's usually available for well under $70, and it toasts more evenly than the Panasonic, though it takes significantly longer to produce results. This option takes up more countertop real estate than the Panasonic FlashXpress NB-G110P, yet has less space in the cooking chamber. That being said, the difference is mainly in vertical space, so while there's probably not enough room for a small tray of muffins to rise, it'll still fit four slices of bread or a 9-inch pizza. Unsurprisingly, this model doesn't include a fan or air fry setting, so you're limited to four simple modes: 'Warm,' 'Broil,' 'Bake,' and 'Toast.'

This model preheats quickly and maintains a stable temperature, making it a good option for reheating a small portion of leftovers or baking one or two cookies. The timer only goes up to 30 minutes, just a little longer than the Panasonic, but it has a 'Stay On' option, so you can keep it cooking as long as you want.

  5. Best Cheap Small Toaster Oven

If you're looking for the smallest, least expensive toaster oven on the market and plan to use it mainly for toast, the Dash Mini DMTO100 is worth considering. It's typically available for less than $30, and it's the smallest model we've tested by a significant margin. Only one slice of bread fits into the cooking chamber, and it fits easily onto a shelf or into a tight corner. It toasts only slightly less evenly than the Black+Decker Natural Convection 4-Slice TO1756SB, and it produces results fast. In fact, it toasts faster than all the pricier models on this list, thanks to its tiny size. Beyond these uses, however, the Dash Mini offers little functionality. It doesn't have a fan for air frying, a broil mode, or even any temperature control or preset cooking modes. Instead, you simply adjust the cooking time up to a maximum of 15 minutes. It's also a pain to clean, mainly because it's so small; grease builds up quickly, and it's challenging to maneuver your hand inside the small cooking chamber.

With all that in mind, if you're looking for a toaster oven that fits in a cramped kitchen or dorm room, this pint-sized model makes great toast. It also preheats quickly, so you don't have to wait long before tossing in a pizza pocket or a small portion of leftovers.

  • BALMUDA The Toaster:

The BALMUDA The Toaster is a very small toaster oven with room for just two slices of bread, so it's even smaller than the Panasonic FlashXpress NB-G110P. It's one of the most expensive toaster ovens we've tested and one of the least versatile, but you might want to check it out for its very small size or its steam function.
