Cooking Capacity

The Ninja Foodi DT201 is a combo toaster oven/air fryer with a big capacity that's suited for preparing full meals. It has a fan for air frying, and unlike most similar ovens, it uses a couple of different kinds of elements: rod heaters, as you'd usually find in an air fryer, and quartz heaters, often found in toaster ovens. It uses different elements for different cooking modes. Its particularly tall cooking chamber can accommodate 2-level cooking, and it has a dedicated mode called 'Whole Roast' meant for simultaneously preparing something like a whole chicken and vegetable side dish. It comes with an air fry basket and a roasting pan, as well as wire racks and enamel-coated baking trays.

Our Verdict

8.0 Mixed Usage

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven is great for mixed use. Its large cooking chamber and many options for tray position mean it can accommodate all kinds of cookware and recipes. It maintains a mostly stable temperature during cooking, which helps ensure cookies or bread get properly baked without burning. It's a great option for making lots of toast for brunch and does a decent job of air frying foods like French fries and chicken wings, although it's a little slow compared with basket-style air fryers. As a big oven, it's also slow to preheat, which makes it a less appealing choice for reheating a quick snack.

Pros
  • Large capacity.

  • Produces mostly crispy, golden brown air-fried food.

  • Toasts evenly at full capacity.

Cons
  • Preheats slowly.

  • Temperature varies somewhat during cooking.

6.9 Leftovers

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven is alright for leftovers. It has a big capacity to accommodate dishes like casseroles. It doesn't overshoot your selected temperature setting, which helps avoid burning or drying out your food before it's properly heated through. However, be careful when preheating because its preheat reminder is inaccurate and will tell you the oven is preheated long before it actually is. It takes a while to actually preheat, which is normal for bigger toaster ovens.

Pros
  • Large capacity.

  • Doesn't overshoot temperature settings.

Cons
  • Preheats slowly.

  • Temperature varies somewhat during cooking.

8.4 Baking

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven is great for baking. Overall, it has impressive temperature stability. The temperature does vary somewhat during cooking, but not by a huge amount, and it doesn't overshoot your selected setting, which helps avoid your food burning before it's cooked. The temperature throughout the cooking chamber is very uniform, without major hot or cold spots, so when you're using the oven's multi-level cooking feature, food on both levels will get cooked the same way.

Pros
  • Doesn't overshoot temperature settings.

  • Uniform temperature in cooking chamber.

Cons
  • Temperature varies somewhat during cooking.

7.4 Air Frying

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven is decent for air frying. It uses a powerful fan and a big cooking chamber, so you can spread your food out in a single layer for more even results. The included mesh basket also helps this unit air fry food evenly. When air frying foods like French fries, chicken wings, or vegetables, it produces mostly crispy, golden-brown results. However, it's somewhat slow for an air fryer, and some of your food is still undercooked. Many drawer-style air fryers are faster and produce more even results.

Pros
  • Large capacity.

  • Produces mostly crispy, golden brown air-fried food.

  • Air fry mode.

Cons
  • Preheats slowly.

  • Temperature varies somewhat during cooking.

8.2 Toasting

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven is great at toasting. It can fit nine slices, and even at full capacity, it does a good job of evenly browning every piece of bread. The slices closest to the door don't get quite as brown as the others, but overall, it's a very good option for making lots of toast at once. That said, it's a bit slow compared with most slot toasters if you use it to make four slices at once.

Pros
  • Toasts evenly at full capacity.

Cons
  • Big capacity.

  • Slow when making just four slices.

8.7 Cooking Capacity

The Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven has a large capacity. It can fit nine slices of bread, most frozen pizzas, a 9 X 13" baking sheet, or a 12-cup muffin tin. The cooking chamber has enough vertical space for multi-level cooking, and it comes with two baking trays and two wire racks, so you can cook bigger batches or two different foods at once.

Pros
  • Large capacity.

Cons
  • 8.0 Mixed Usage
  • 6.9 Leftovers

Performance Usages

  • 8.4 Baking
  • 7.4 Air Frying
  • 8.2 Toasting

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Ninja DT201 comes in 'Silver.' Here's a picture of our unit's label.

If you encounter another variant, let us know in the comments, and we'll update our review.

Compared To Other Toaster Ovens

The Ninja DT201 is a large toaster oven/air fryer. Its cooking chamber is taller than other large toaster ovens', like the Anova Precision Oven 2.0 and Breville the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900BSS, so it's a good option for taller items like loaves of bread and whole chickens. There's also a dedicated 'Whole Roast' mode meant for cooking something like a roast or a chicken and a side dish simultaneously. It performs quite well for air frying, although it's slower than most drawer-style air fryers. It's also much better at toasting than the Breville or Anova, so it's a reasonable alternative to a slot toaster if you need to make a lot of toast at once.

It has a big cooking chamber that will fit nine slices of bread and a 9" X 13" sheet pan. The cooking area is particularly tall, so you have plenty of vertical space for bigger items like a whole chicken or for multi-level cooking. There are four possible tray positions, so you can move it close to the upper elements for broiling, use a lower position so bigger items will fit, or use a middle setting for baking or air frying.

It's very versatile. It has 10 different modes that use either no fan, a high fan, or a low fan speed. Most modes are similar to those of other air fryer/ovens, but it also has an unusual 'Whole Roast' setting meant for cooking a whole chicken and side dish simultaneously.

Unlike most toaster ovens, it has different types of elements used for different modes. There are quartz elements, as you would typically find in a toaster oven, and a rod heater and fan at the back, which you'd usually find in an air fryer or regular full-size oven. This rod heater and fan help it perform well for air frying.

  • Whole Roast: 250 - 450°F, rod heater, low fan
  • Air Roast: 250 - 450°F, rod heater, low fan
  • Air Fry: 250 - 450°F, rod heater, high fan
  • Bake: 180 - 450°F, rod heater, low fan
  • Dehydrate: 85 - 200°F, rod heater, low fan
  • Broil: Either 'High' or 'Low,' quartz elements, fan is off
  • Toast: Shades 1 - 7, quartz heaters, fan is off
  • Bagel: Shades 1 - 7, quartz heaters, fan is off
  • Pizza: 180 - 450°F, rod heater, high fan
  • Reheat: 100 - 450°F, quartz heaters, fan is off

When you select a function, the screen displays the rack position you should use. You can also use the '2 Level' button, which displays both suggested rack positions. There's a light inside the cooking chamber that you can switch on and off.

It's very easy to clean. The cooking chamber doesn't have a non-stick coating, but it's spacious enough to reach inside easily, and its elements are well spaced, so you can easily clean between and underneath. The baking tray has an enamel coating for easier cleaning. However, its recessed door glass makes it difficult to remove crumbs or debris. There are also sharp corners around its elements; you must be careful not to cut yourself when cleaning them.

It's decent at air frying. Using its air fry setting and high fan speed, it can cook foods like French fries and produces mostly even results. That said, some parts are still undercooked when your food is finished. It's also not quite as fast as most good drawer-style air fryers.

Yes

This toaster oven has a preheat mode, but the preheat reminder is inaccurate. If you set it to 350 °F, the oven tells you it's preheated when its actual temperature is only 150 °F. It takes several minutes to preheat, so while it's quite slow, it's pretty much in line with other ovens of a similar size.

It has great temperature stability. Although the temperature bounces up and down a bit during cooking, it never overshoots your temperature setting, which helps lower the risk of your food burning or drying out before it's cooked through. The temperature is also uniform throughout the cooking chamber, meaning you shouldn't notice hot or cold spots.

Making nine slices of golden brown toast takes a while, but since it has such a big capacity, it's still more efficient than many slot toasters if you need to make a lot of toast at once. However, it's quite slow if you only make four slices.
