Toaster ovens are versatile appliances that can make bagels for breakfast, reheat leftovers for lunch, and maybe even cook a frozen pizza for dinner. The best models preheat quickly, cook food evenly, and maintain a stable temperature, ensuring you can reheat leftovers and even bake without burning your food. If you want to use it regularly for toast, you'll want one that offers comparable performance to a good slot toaster. Multiple rack positions and modes, like a broil function, also help make a toaster oven more versatile. You'll likely want one that's easy to clean, too.
We've tested over 20 models, and below you'll find our recommendations for the best toaster ovens for most people. If you're short on space, you can also see our picks for the best small toaster ovens or the best slot toasters. Or, if you're interested in a toaster oven with an air fry function, consider our recommendations for the best toaster oven-style air fryers.

Best Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage8.0Leftovers6.9Baking8.4Air Frying7.4Toasting8.2Cooking Capacity8.7Coated Baking TrayYesSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoThe best toaster oven we've tested is the Ninja Foodi DT201, a spacious option with plenty of room for big meals and elaborate bakes. This model stands out for its excellent toasting performance, rivaling that of the best slot toasters. Whether you're making four slices of toast for a small family breakfast or nine for a big brunch, it makes golden-brown toast that's evenly toasted on both sides. Thanks to its impressive temperature stability, this toaster oven can also bake without drying out or burning your food. And it offers decent air frying performance, which is uncommon for toaster ovens. Overall, it's an amazingly versatile option; you'll even find settings for roasting a whole chicken and dehydrating.
The biggest downside of this model is its speed. It's a very large model with an equally large cooking capacity, so it takes quite a while to heat up. Both its preheat and toasting speeds are acceptable, but not as fast as most smaller models, so it's not the best choice for quickly reheating leftovers. It includes a preheat reminder, which would make waiting a little more convenient, but unfortunately, it's inaccurate and tells you the oven is ready long before it really is. On the upside, the spacious chamber is very easy to clean, even without a non-stick coating.

Best Upper Mid-Range Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage8.0Leftovers8.6Baking8.7Air Frying7.5Toasting8.0Cooking Capacity7.2Coated Baking TrayYesSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoIf you don't need the extra cooking capacity and prefer to spend less, consider the Ninja Flip SP151. It can't handle as many slices of toast at once or toast as evenly as the Ninja Foodi DT201, but it does so faster, which is handy when you need a quick breakfast before running out the door. The same is true of its air frying performance; it delivers results faster, but leaves a little more of each batch undercooked or burnt, likely due in part to its less powerful fan motor. While it's a pretty versatile air fryer, its weaker airflow makes it less suitable for roasting or making extra-crispy food. That said, you can still use it to dehydrate, and thanks to its excellent temperature stability, it's even better than our top pick for baking.
This short toaster oven has a unique trick to save counter space; it's designed to be flipped up on its back when you're not using it. This design also means you don't have much vertical space in the cooking chamber. This makes it more awkward to clean and means that baking loaves of bread and cooking whole chickens are probably out of the question. Still, its cooking chamber is still pretty wide, with room for an 11-inch pizza or six slices of bread. Like the DT201, its preheat reminder is inaccurate, but this compact toaster oven reaches your selected temperature quickly, so it's less of an issue.

Best Mid-Range Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage8.1Leftovers7.9Baking9.0Air Frying7.2Toasting7.4Cooking Capacity8.4Coated Baking TrayYesSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoThe COSORI Smart Air Fryer CS130-AO is an impressive option at a midrange price, and it comes with useful special features. When it comes to its basic functions, this model provides just decent performance in some cases and fantastic performance in others. It toasts very evenly, especially at maximum capacity, but the process is also very slow. It's more efficient when air frying, but it still cooks a bit less evenly and much more slowly than the Ninja Flip SP151. On the other hand, it maintains a very stable temperature throughout cooking, making it an ideal choice for baking, and it preheats pretty fast, so it's also a very good choice for quickly reheating leftovers.
Beyond these basic functions, this toaster oven includes some less common options, like 'Dehydrate,' 'Ferment,' 'Sous Vide,' and even 'Rotisserie,' which uses the included rotisserie spit. With access to the VeSync app, you can send recipe info straight to the oven and monitor cooking, too. Like the Ninja Foodi DT201, it has a very large cooking chamber, and while it can't fit as many slices of toast, it can accommodate a 13-inch pizza or bakeware like a 9" x 13" baking sheet. Plus, there's plenty of vertical space, making it easy to roast a whole chicken or bake a loaf of bread. It's also the easiest to clean of the bunch, thanks to the cooking chamber's non-stick coating.

Best Budget Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage7.3Leftovers8.1Baking9.0Air Frying4.6Toasting7.8Cooking Capacity7.9Coated Baking TrayNoSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoLooking for the best toaster oven at a budget-friendly price? Consider the Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp 31196FG. Compared to a smart toaster oven like the COSORI Smart Air Fryer CS130-AO, it offers fewer advanced features, but that might be a plus if you prefer a straightforward, dependable toaster oven. This smaller model toasts impressively evenly with four or six slices, and while it still works fairly slowly, it also outperforms both the COSORI and our top pick, the Ninja Foodi DT201, in this regard. It preheats quickly, too, so you don't have to wait long before heating up leftovers or making a quick snack. And thanks to its stable temperature throughout the cooking process, you can bake without worrying about drying out or burning your recipe.
Of course, this air fryer's affordable price comes with some concessions. It's less versatile than the picks above. It can't reach as low a temperature, so it's not ideal for dehydrating. And with a less powerful fan motor and a less powerful 'Broil' setting, it's not as useful for recipes that involve roasting or quickly crisping food. While it does include an 'Air Fry' setting, the weaker fan, in particular, leads to uneven and very slow air frying. That said, it still offers several other preset cooking modes and remains well-suited for everyday toaster-oven tasks. It's also pretty easy to clean.

Best Cheap Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage5.6Leftovers8.4Baking7.9Air Frying2.0Toasting7.3Cooking Capacity5.4Coated Baking TrayNoSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoIf you're searching for the best air fryer available at the lowest possible price, the Black+Decker Natural Convection 4-Slice TO1756SB might be a good fit. While there are certainly some tradeoffs at this price point, it toasts faster than the Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp 31196FG, and the slices are pretty evenly browned by the time it finishes. It also preheats faster than any of the pricier models above, making it ideal for quickly reheating leftovers. Its temperature fluctuates a bit throughout cooking, but it's still more than stable enough for baking, so you can make a small batch of cookies or a bake-from-frozen croissant with very good results.
On the downside, this toaster oven is even less versatile than the Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp. It also air fries even less evenly and extremely slowly. That said, it doesn't have a fan at all, or an air fry mode, so it's really not meant for this purpose. Instead, it has just four basic cooking modes: 'Warm,' 'Broil,' 'Bake,' and 'Toast.' It's a much smaller model, too, so while it'll save a lot of counter space, you can only make four slices of toast at once. The smaller size also makes it a bit tricky to clean.

Best Air-Frying Toaster Oven
Mixed Usage7.0Leftovers7.8Baking5.9Air Frying7.7Toasting7.1Cooking Capacity7.1Coated Baking TrayNoSee all our test resultsSteam FunctionNoIf you want to know if a toaster oven air fryer can stand in for a basket-style air fryer, the answer is somewhat complicated. While our top toaster oven/air fryer pick, the Cuisinart Air Fryer TOA-70, doesn't quite match the air-frying performance of our best basket air fryer recommendation, the Ninja Foodi DZ550, it comes surprisingly close. Using its 'Air Fry' mode and mesh air frying basket, the TOA-70 makes mostly crispy foods like French fries and chicken wings. It air fries a little less evenly than the Ninja Foodi DT201, but it's much faster, rivaling the speed of most basket-style air fryers.
Otherwise, it's a decently versatile option, though it has some downsides for uses beyond air frying. It's not the best for toasting, especially if you use its full six-slice capacity, since it tends to toast the bottom of the bread very unevenly. It has mediocre temperature stability and sometimes overshoots your selected temperature, meaning baked goods like cookies or bread may dry out or burn before cooking through. On the plus side, it has an unusual 'Grill' feature that heats only from the bottom, which can be useful for things like burgers. It's easy to clean overall, although it can be hard to reach behind the upper elements.

Breville the Smart Oven BOV800XL:
The Breville the Smart Oven BOV800XL is a medium-sized toaster oven that offers even better temperature stability than our top pick, the Ninja Foodi DT201. This makes it an excellent choice for baking and cooking delicate foods, like fish.
Unfortunately, it can't brown toast as evenly, it's not intended for air frying, and it's a bit harder to clean.

Breville the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900BSS:
The Breville the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro BOV900BSS is a higher-end toaster oven. While it's a strong option for air frying, it's much more expensive than the Ninja Foodi DT201. The Breville also preheats and toasts more slowly, and it's not great for toasting at maximum capacity.
