The Shark Air Purifier HP102PET is an air purifier intended for small rooms. Like the Shark Air Purifier MAX, it has a two-stage filtration system, but it's housed in a smaller body and has a less powerful motor. Like other Shark models, it's equipped with the brand's Clean Sense IQ system, which allows it to automatically adjust its fan speed depending on current air quality.
Our Verdict
The Shark Air Purifier HP102PET is an adequate option for pet owners. Its ability to seal in the smallest of airborne particles, like pet dander, falls short of many of its rivals, though it's worth noting that it isn't terrible in this respect. It operates fairly quietly, which is good if your pet is easily startled by loud noises.
- Reasonably quiet operation.
- Automatic fan speed adjustment feature.
- Air purification performance is middling.
- No smartphone app.
- Somewhat low air cleaning rate.
The Shark Air Purifier HP102PET is decent for bedrooms. Its compact size makes it easy to set up wherever you'd like in your bedroom, and this model runs relatively quietly. You can also easily turn off its display lights. Its Clean Sense IQ system also allows it to automatically change fan speed depending on current air quality, which can help minimize noise and energy consumption if air quality is at an acceptable level for long enough. With all that being said, its air filtration performance is nothing special, and it isn't especially efficient at cleaning larger bedrooms.
- Reasonably quiet operation.
- Automatic fan speed adjustment feature.
- Display light shutoff.
- Air purification performance is middling.
- No smartphone app.
- Somewhat low air cleaning rate.

Changelog
-
Updated May 06, 2026:
We've added a link to the Shark NeverChange HP152 in the Particle Filtration Rate section of the review to provide an alternative with a higher max particle filtration rate.
- Updated May 01, 2026: We've updated this review to version 1.2 of our test bench. This new methodology adds the new Low-Noise Particle Filtration Rate test, which measures particle filtration performance when the device is configured to run at a standard operating volume below 45 dBA. If you're interested in seeing more about the changes made to this test bench, see our changelog.
- Updated Feb 20, 2026: Version 1.1 of our air purifier testing methodology provides a more representative summary of unit performance, with a revised Particle Filtration Rate test conducted in a better-sealed environment and a more reliable means of generating consistently sized particulate matter. We've also included a parameter for the machine's maximum recommended room size. For a more detailed breakdown of the changes made, see our full changelog.
- Updated Nov 04, 2025: Version 1.0.2 of our Air Purifier Test Bench rectifies calculation errors in our existing Particle Filtration Rate test to provide more representative results of some units. For a more detailed breakdown of the changes made, see our full changelog.

Popular Air Purifier Comparisons
This is a relatively compact air purifier intended for small to medium-sized rooms. Its relatively compact size makes it easy to set up wherever you'd like in your home. Unfortunately, its performance lags behind segment stalwarts like the Coway Airmega 200M or Levoit Core 300.
The Shark NeverChange HP152 is a better performer than the Shark Air Purifier HP102PET. The HP152 can operate more effectively in larger spaces, and its NeverChange filter system lowers recurring costs over time. That said, the HP102PET does have an air quality sensor mode, which allows it to change its fan speed in real time depending on current air quality, reducing the amount of hands-on interaction required while running the unit.
Test Results
Shark sells a remote control to operate the air purifier from afar. Do note that this remote only works when the air purifier is within line of sight, so you can't adjust settings from across the house. You can buy this remote here.
There are three levels of display brightness, which you can cycle through by tapping the 'Light' icon: fully off, mid brightness, and full brightness.
The indicator light surrounding the central display changes color depending on the Clean Sense IQ system's estimate of current air quality:
- Blue: Good
- Orange: Fair
- Red: Poor
You can also cycle through this display to show the concentration of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 particles in the air.
This air purifier has a two-stage filter system comprised of an Anti-Allergen NANOSEAL HEPA filter and an activated carbon sheet to trap odors. Models without the 'PET' suffix don't come with a filter containing an activated carbon layer. The manufacturer doesn't issue any regular maintenance schedule for this filter; note that you'll need to replace it every six to 12 months. You can find a replacement here.
The Shark Air Purifier HP102PET's particle filtration rate is subpar. Even at its highest maximum fan speed, it can only really operate efficiently in bedrooms and offices. If you want a Shark air purifier that delivers a slightly higher maximum particle filtration rate, consider the Shark NeverChange HP152.
