The Shark NeverChange HP152 is a compact air purifier designed for small spaces. Like other models in the NeverChange product lineup, it has a unique selling point in that its primary HEPA filter has an estimated lifespan of five years, minimizing ownership costs versus comparable units with more conventional filtration systems. Beyond that, this unit also features an odor-masking scent cartridge, similar in design to the component found in some of the brand's vacuum cleaners. This unit doesn't feature Wi-Fi connectivity or a companion app, so you'll need to rely on the on-board controls to make adjustments unless you purchase the separately available remote control.

Our Verdict

6.4
Pets

The Shark NeverChange HP152 is an unremarkable option for pet owners. Even at its highest fan speed, its particle filtration rate is on the lower end; this unit will only operate effectively in smaller spaces like bedrooms or offices, and it'll struggle in larger spaces. Noise output is fairly low overall, and while it produces a faint hush that can be distracting at higher fan speeds, it's unlikely to startle noise-sensitive pets. Its multi-stage filtration system includes a pre-filter to trap finer strands of fur, helping to keep the primary HEPA filter clean. While an integrated cartridge claims to 'neutralize' unpleasant pet odors, it actually serves more to mask them with a detergent-like scent, which might not be to everyone's liking. Thankfully, the intensity of this scent can be adjusted by twisting the dial or simply removing it from the unit.

Pros
  • Pre-filter can trap finer strands of fur.

  • Scent cartridge can mask unpleasant odors.

  • Very quiet at lower fan speeds.

Cons
  • At max fan speed, CADR is insufficient for larger spaces.

  • Scent cartridge can also become an annoyance for some.

6.9
Bedroom

The Shark NeverChange HP152 is an adequate option for use in bedrooms. Lowering its fan speed keeps operating noise low enough for overnight operation, but reduces its already limited particle filtration rate, and you may have to turn things back up again for effective operation in bigger bedrooms. Quality of life features are limited: while a remote control can be used to operate the unit, it's sold separately, so you'll need to get out of bed to adjust settings. At the very least, the front display can be dimmed to reduce distractions while you're trying to get some shut-eye.

Pros
  • Compact, lightweight design.

  • Very quiet at lower fan speeds.

Cons
  • No Wi-Fi connectivity, and remote control is sold separately.

  • At max fan speed, CADR is insufficient for larger spaces.

6.2
Particle Filtration Rate

The Shark NeverChange HP152's particle filtration rate is mediocre. While it does have a HEPA-grade filter, the unit's compact motor simply doesn't produce sufficient airflow for effective operation in larger spaces, with maximum coverage topping out at a little over 14 m² (150 ft²). While that's sufficient for the average bedroom or office, it'll struggle in larger primary bedrooms, living rooms, or basements.

Pros
None
Cons
  • At max fan speed, CADR is insufficient for larger spaces.

    Popular Air Purifier Comparisons

The Shark NeverChange HP152 is a compact air purifier intended for small spaces. Its long-lasting filter is a unique selling point compared to similarly positioned air purifiers on the market, such as the Levoit Core 200S, which incur higher recurring costs; it shares this feature with the larger and pricier Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302. In terms of general performance, it edges out the Levoit, as well as the similarly designed Shark Air Purifier HP102PET, though it's still only mediocre and best suited for smaller spaces. The HP152's limited feature set results in a less hands-off ownership experience than the comparatively feature-rich Levoit Core 200S, which can be operated from afar with a smartphone app.

For those interested in alternatives, see our recommendations for the best air purifiers for dust, the best air purifiers for bedrooms, and the best air purifiers for pets.

    Levoit Core 200S

    Track

The Levoit Core 200S and Shark NeverChange HP152 are pretty evenly matched small-room air purifiers. The Levoit offers a slightly more hands-off user experience, with Wi-Fi integration that lets you control the device and adjust settings via the VeSync companion app. The Levoit is also fractionally quieter at its lowest fan speed. Meanwhile, the Shark has a slightly higher max clean air delivery rate and can operate efficiently in larger rooms as a result.

    Shark Air Purifier HP102PET

    Track

The Shark NeverChange HP152 is a better performer than the Shark Air Purifier HP102PET. The HP152 can operate more effectively in larger spaces, and its NeverChange filter system lowers recurring costs over time. That said, the HP102PET does have an air quality sensor mode, which allows it to change its fan speed in real time depending on current air quality, reducing the amount of hands-on interaction required while running the unit.

    PuroAir 240

    Track

The PuroAir 240 is a slightly better small-room air purifier than the Shark NeverChange HP152. The Shark has a slightly higher clean air delivery rate at its highest fan speed and will be quicker to clear the air in a comparably sized space, though only by a little. The Shark's Neverchange filter system is a bit of a misnomer, since you do have to replace the primary filter every five or so years, but that still results in lower ownership costs than the PuroAir, which uses much shorter-lived filters. However, the PuroAir runs quieter, and while neither unit comes with a remote control or Wi-Fi connectivity, the PuroAir at least has an automatic power adjustment feature, allowing for set-it-and-forget operation.

This air purifier does incur some minor recurring costs.

    • Odor Neutralizer Cartridge: This cartridge needs to be replaced every three months. Replacements are available on Shark's website.
    • Multi-Stage HEPA Filter: This main filter has a manufacturer-estimated lifespan of five years. Replacements are available on Shark's website. The exterior dust filter and pre-filter should be wiped with a microfiber cloth or a vacuum running at low suction every two months or so.
