The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is a high-end air purifier designed for small spaces. It has a four-stage filtration system that includes a combined HEPA/activated carbon layer with a five-year lifespan. There's little in the way of extra features: no Wi-Fi connectivity or particle sensor, though you can manually toggle between three fan speeds.

Our Verdict

3.9
Pets

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is a poor choice for pet owners. Its particle filtration performance is poor even at its highest fan speed, and it'll struggle to pull particulate matter, like pet dander, out of the air in a moderately sized room like an office or bedroom, let alone a larger space. Beyond that, it's lacking in features compared to many cheaper alternatives, with no automatic fan speed adjustment function and no onboard particle sensor. It's also noisier than some other models at its lowest fan speed, though admittedly, it isn't the worst at higher fan speeds, and shouldn't be a major disturbance to pets.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Particle filtration rate is very low.

  • Noisier than its peers at lower fan speeds.

4.7
Bedroom

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is bad for use in bedrooms. Actual particle filtration performance lags far behind cheaper, more compact peers, and it'll have a hard time clearing particulates in bigger bedrooms. Beyond that, there's no air quality monitoring system, so it can't automatically ramp up its fan speed if air quality takes a dive overnight. In real-world terms, it isn't distractingly noisy at its lowest fan speed, but it does still produce more noise than some other models in this configuration. At the very least, it doesn't have any bright indicator lights or displays that could prevent you from getting some shuteye.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Particle filtration rate is very low.

  • No air quality monitoring system.

  • Noisier than its peers at lower fan speeds.

3.5
Particle Filtration Rate

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior's particle filtration rate is poor. Put simply, its motor isn't especially powerful, and struggles to generate meaningful airflow through its filter. As a result, it's a poor performer not only within medium-sized spaces like living or dining rooms, but it'll also take quite a while to clear the air in smaller spaces like bedrooms. All in all, it's only suited to really compact spaces, like dorm rooms or very small offices.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is available in four colorways: 'Black', 'White', 'Midnight Blue', and 'Sandstone'. Beyond that, it can also be purchased with or without built-in caster wheels at each corner. We bought and tested a 'Midnight Blue' example, and for those interested, here's a photo of our product's label.

    Popular Air Purifier Comparisons

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is a high-end air purifier. Put simply, it does little to justify its price tag, with vastly inferior performance and fewer features than cheaper alternatives like the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty or Levoit Vital 200S. This results from its highly restrictive filtration system and relatively weak fan motor. That being said, its filter contains a relatively high amount of activated carbon compared to more conventional models, a significant contributor to its higher price point and likely resulting in a greater degree of VOC reduction. However, that isn't an attribute we currently evaluate, and we are unable to quantify its performance in this respect.

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior uses a four-stage filter. It consists of:

    • A large particle pre-filter for larger particulate matter, like dust or fine hair.
    • A medium particle pre-filter layer for mold spores and pollen.
    • A 'medical-grade' HEPA filter, advertised to capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns and 99% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns, which lines up with the US H13 standard, at least on paper.
    • 270 cubic inches of activated carbon pellets to absorb odors, chemicals, mycotoxins, and VOCs.

The filter carries a five-year warranty, whereupon if the filter doesn't last for five years under what the manufacturer defines as "normal residential use", you can get a discount on a replacement, which can be purchased directly from the manufacturer:

    • Up to two years of use: 40% off retail price plus shipping

    61 m³/hr (36 CFM)
Recommended Room Size @ Max Fan Speed
    6.2 m² (67 ft²)

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior's particle filtration rate is very poor, even at its highest fan speed of 3. The weak fan struggles to pull air through its restrictive filtration system, so it's only really suited for the smallest offices or bedrooms and won't operate especially efficiently in larger living rooms or dining areas.

    5.4
    Noise
    Noise @ Lowest Fan Speed
    37.3dBA
    Noise @ Highest Fan Speed
    54.2dBA

The Austin Air HealthMate Junior is relatively noisy. At its lowest fan speed, it produces a hair over 37 dBA; in real-world terms, that's far from hugely distracting, but it's worth noting that alternatives like the Levoit Core 600S are noticeably quieter in this configuration. Running it at its highest fan speed isn't a huge distraction, and the fan noise should be mostly drowned out by a TV playing nearby at a normal volume.
