TCL QM851G
TCL QM7K
The TCL QM851G is better than the TCL QM7K. While the QM7K has the better contrast, the QM8's local dimming solution is noticeably faster and more precise, giving the TV better overall black levels. The QM851G is also the more colorful TV overall. Unfortunately, the QM851G's HDR brightness accuracy is quite poor, while the QM7K's is great, so it follows the content creator's intent much more closely.

I am in the market and trying to decide between these 2 TVs. To me the QM8 seems like the no brainer pick between these 2… With the QM8 being generally cheaper, and beating the QM7K in most categories, I don’t know why I would go with the QM7K? I have heard nothing but hype about the QM7K, and I’m not sure why if it is beaten out by last year’s cheaper model.. any guidance?
You’re looking at the overall HDR Brightness score, which only looks at the peak brightness of the display. The text you’ve quoted refers specifically to the accuracy of that brightness. While the QM8 is significantly brighter than the QM7K, it’s also significantly less accurate. In HDR, the brightness of the scene is set by the content creator, so if a scene is supposed to be at around 100 nits, the TV is supposed to match that. The QM8 doesn’t follow that, and instead displays just about everything much brighter than it’s supposed to be.

This actually scores as 9.4 to 7.4 with a huge advantage QM8.
