The Tuft and Needle Mint is a mid-range all-foam mattress. Its upper comfort layer is made of plush polyfoam, with a lower comfort layer of memory foam, and polyfoam transition and support layers. It's marketed as a plusher version of the all-foam Tuft and Needle Classic, and uses the same proprietary foams, but has thicker upper comfort and transition layers. The foams are certified by CertiPUR-US for containing low levels of chemicals and pollutants such as formaldehyde, and also meet the Greenguard Gold standard for low VOC emissions.

Our Verdict

7.9
Side Sleeping

The Tuft and Needle Mint is suitable for a range of side sleepers. It offers decent body conformity for lighter individuals, so it'll offer satisfactory pressure relief for your arm and shoulder. While you might ideally want a mattress that lets you sink in a little more, it performs better for lighter people than many 'Medium' and even 'Medium-Plush' mattresses. It offers excellent body conformity for average-weight people and fantastic body conformity for heavier individuals, so it's suitable for side sleepers in those weight categories as well. However, keep in mind that heavier individuals will sink into the mattress more overall, which will add to its enveloping feel.

Pros
  • Decent body conformity for lighter people.

  • Excellent body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier people.

Cons
None
7.7
Back Sleeping

The Tuft and Needle Mint is best suited for lighter back sleepers. It offers good support for people in that weight category, so your hips won't sink in much more than the rest of your body. Its support performance is quite consistent for different weight categories. It also offers good support for heavier individuals and slightly worse, but still decent support, for average-weight people. Its plush upper layers help relieve pressure but also create an enveloping feel. Heavier people will sink more into the mattress, so keep that in mind if you like to sleep 'on' your mattress instead of 'in' it.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter people.

  • Good support for heavier people.

  • Decent support for average-weight people.

Cons
None
7.6
Stomach Sleeping

The Tuft and Needle Mint is best suited for lighter stomach sleepers. It offers good support for people in that weight category, which prevents your back from arching when sleeping on your stomach. It also offers good support for heavier individuals, even compared with some firmer mattresses. However, keep in mind that it has an enveloping feel, and while your body will sink evenly into the mattress, you might not like it if you prefer to sleep 'on' your mattress. It offers slightly worse support for people in the average-weight category, but it's still a reasonable option.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter people.

  • Good support for heavier people.

Cons
  • Average-weight people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

8.4
Longevity

The Tuft and Needle Mint is a durable mattress. The upper comfort and transition layers are made of very dense, high-quality polyfoam, which is uncommon and will help these layers resist showing signs of wear for longer compared to lower-quality foams. The support layer is made of less-dense but still good-quality polyfoam. That said, its lower comfort layer is made of lower-quality foam, so it's a weak point in terms of durability.

Pros
  • Mostly made of high- or good-quality foam.

Cons
None
7.9
Pressure Relief

The Tuft and Needle Mint's pressure relief performance is strongest for heavier and average-weight individuals, but it offers a good performance for lighter people as well. This mattress's very soft comfort layers allow you to sink in easily, which helps with pressure relief. This makes it a good option for many side sleepers, although you might find it uncomfortable if you like to sleep 'on' your mattress. That said, it has very low contouring, so while most people will sink into it at least a few inches, its comfort layers don't create a snug hugging sensation.

Pros
  • Decent body conformity for lighter people.

  • Excellent body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier people.

  • You'll sink easily into the comfort layers.

Cons
  • Low contouring.

7.6
Support

The Tuft and Needle Mint is most supportive for lighter people but offers a solid performance for individuals in other weight categories as well. If you're in the lighter weight category, its good support makes it suitable for back and stomach sleeping. Heavier people also sink evenly into the mattress. Its support performance is a bit worse for average-weight people, who may not engage as much with its firmer support layer. However, it's still decently supportive, so it's not a bad option for average-weight back or combination sleepers.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter people.

  • Good support for heavier people.

Cons
  • Average-weight people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

8.4
Cooling

The Tuft and Needle Mint offers great cooling. It dissipates a great amount of heat during the first hour you're in bed, and offers a similarly impressive cooling performance overnight. It's cooling enough to keep most people comfortable, including hot sleepers.

Pros
  • Cooling enough for hot sleepers.

Cons
None
9.0
Motion Dissipation

The Tuft and Needle Mint offers a fantastic motion dissipation performance. You won't feel most movements, and bigger movements aren't felt all over the mattress, so when your partner rolls over, you may feel it around the lumbar area, but not near your head. Motion also dissipates very quickly, so you won't feel like the mattress wobbles whenever someone moves. If you're often disturbed by your partner's tossing and turning, it's worth considering.

Pros
  • Fantastic motion dissipation, so movements are unlikely to wake you.

Cons
None
8.7
Responsiveness

The Tuft and Needle Mint is very responsive. The sleeping surface recovers its shape quickly after being compressed, so you won't feel like you're stuck in place. However, while it doesn't completely lack bounciness, it's noticeably less springy than many mattresses, which makes moving around feel more difficult.

Pros
  • Responsive sleeping surface, so you don't feel stuck.

Cons
  • Not very bouncy.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Tuft and Needle Mint mattress comes in one firmness level (called 'Medium-Plush' by the manufacturer) and is available in standard sizes, including Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

This mattress is sometimes called 'Enhanced Mint.' The '2020 Mint' and 'Classic Mint' are older models with slightly different designs and may perform differently. There's also the Tuft and Needle Mint Hybrid, which includes a coil support layer. Our results are only valid for the all-foam Mint (or 'Enhanced Mint) variant. Here's a picture of our unit's label.

If you have this mattress or a variant, we invite you to share your experience in the comments!

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Tuft & Needle Mint is an all-foam mattress that offers better pressure relief than many 'Medium' and even some 'Medium-Plush' mattresses, making it well-suited for side sleepers, including lighter side sleepers. This all-foam mattress is also a good choice if you sleep with a partner, since it offers fantastic motion dissipation. However, it's not very bouncy, which can make it feel lifeless and more difficult to move around on. The Saatva Classic (Plush Soft) offers a much springier feel and is also a good option for side sleeping, although its motion dissipation is much worse. Also, while it's quite supportive for most people, if you also sleep on your back or stomach, you might prefer the Casper Snow, which has a similar pressure relief performance and much better support.

If you're looking for more options, check out our recommendations for the best mattresses for side sleepers, the best memory foam mattresses, and the best mattresses overall.

    Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring

The Tuft and Needle Mint is better than the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring for most people. The Tuft and Needle is firmer overall, but offers better pressure relief for lighter side sleepers. It's also more supportive for average-weight and heavier people, so it's better for back/stomach sleepers in that weight category. It's more cooling and durable and offers significantly better motion isolation. That said, some may prefer the Serta's somewhat bouncier and more contouring feel.

    Casper Snow

You might prefer either the Casper Snow or the Tuft and Needle Mint, depending on your preferences and sleeping position. The Casper is a slow-moving memory foam mattress with a hugging feel. The Tuft has similarly soft upper comfort layers, but a much more responsive, less contouring sleeping surface. The Tuft and Needle is much more durable and offers better motion dissipation, while the Casper is more cooling. Both stand out as good options for side sleepers, including lighter side sleepers, but the Casper is more supportive, making it better for back and stomach sleeping.

    Nectar Premier

The Tuft and Needle Mint is better for most people than the Nectar Premier. Both are all-foam 'Medium' mattresses, but the Tuft and Needle offers better support for average and heavier individuals and better pressure relief for lighter individuals. It's made of higher-quality, more durable foam and has much better edge support. The Nectar's upper comfort layers are more contouring, which you might prefer if you like the way memory foam molds around you.

    Saatva Classic (Plush Soft)

The Tuft and Needle Mint is better than the Saatva Classic (Plush Soft) for most people. Both mattresses are well-suited for side sleepers, offering enough pressure relief even for lighter side sleepers. The Tuft and Needle is more supportive, so it can work for a wider range of back and stomach sleepers. It also offers significantly better motion isolation. That said, it's not very bouncy, and you might prefer the Saatva's much springier feel, which makes it feel easier to move around in your sleep.

The Tuft and Needle Mint has a 'Medium' firmness level. It offers decent body conformity for lighter people and even better conformity for average-weight and heavier people, making it a good option for side sleepers. It's also suitable for back/stomach sleeping, as it offers good support for lighter and heavier people, and slightly worse, but satisfactory support for people in the average-weight category.

This 'Medium' mattress offers excellent body conformity for average-weight people and fantastic body conformity for people in the heavier-weight category. Your shoulder will sink several inches into the mattress, which helps reduce pressure for side sleepers. It also performs decently for lighter people. While you might ideally want better body conformity for side sleeping, its soft comfort layers offer more pressure relief for lighter people than some 'Medium-Plush' mattresses, like the Serta Perfect Sleeper Innerspring.

This mattress is quite supportive for most people. It performs best for people in the lighter weight category, who will mostly engage with the upper comfort layer. It also offers good support for heavier individuals. You'll sink into it more, but it does a good job of keeping your spine aligned. It offers slightly worse but still decent support for average-weight people.

    Maximum Rebound Height
    12.0 cm (4.7")

It's a somewhat bouncy mattress. It avoids the static feeling of some all-foam mattresses, which helps make it feel easier to change sleeping positions. However, it has a less lively feel than most mattresses with springs.

This mattress's upper comfort layers offer very low contouring. You'll sink into the soft upper layers quite a bit, but they don't hug or mold around you much, so less of the mattress surface is in contact with your body. The mattress's high sinking can make you feel like you're sleeping 'in' it and not 'on' it, but unlike many mattresses, it doesn't create a hugging sensation.

It has superb motion dissipation. It dampens movements significantly, so you may not feel smaller movements, like a pet jumping onto the foot of the bed, at all. You'll feel bigger movements, but mostly near the source, so if your partner rolls over, you may feel it around the lumbar area, but not all over the mattress. Movements also dissipate quickly, so you'll only feel an initial shock, not like the mattress is wobbling.

It has great edge support. Despite lacking any edge support component, like firmer foam along the sides, it has sturdy edges that allow you to sleep near the edge without feeling at risk of sliding off. You won't sink in a huge amount when you sit on the side of the bed, which helps make it easier to get in and out of bed.

This mattress includes four layers of foam. The upper comfort layer directly under the mattress cover is made of polyfoam. It's followed by a thinner, lower comfort layer of memory foam and a polyfoam transition layer. These layers help give the upper layers a plush but responsive feel. Like most all-foam mattresses, its support layer is made of polyfoam, which helps add firmness and a bit of bounce.

This mattress uses mostly high-quality or good-quality foam. The upper comfort and transition layers are both made of very dense, high-quality polyfoam that will resist showing signs of wear for longer than lower-quality foams. The support layer is made of less-dense polyfoam but still meets the standard for good quality, which should help prevent sagging versus lower-density foams. The lower comfort layer is the weak point in terms of durability, as it's made of lower-quality memory foam. This layer may start forming permanent indentations or body impressions sooner.

The upper comfort layer is 5.0 cm/2.0" thick and has a soft feel, so you'll likely compress it and also sink into the layers below. The 2.8 cm/1.1" lower comfort and 5 cm/2" polyfoam transition layers are only slightly firmer, so you'll sink quite far into the mattress. Still, you won't fully compress the 13 cm/5.1" of foam above the support layer, which helps prevent you from directly feeling that very firm layer.

This mattress's upper comfort layer is made of very soft foam that you'll easily sink into. The lower comfort and transition layers are a bit firmer, but still have a soft feel. The 13 cm/5.1" of soft foam above the support layer makes it feel like you're sleeping 'in' the mattress, instead of 'on' it. The support layer is made of very firm foam, which helps prevent the heavier parts of your body from sinking in further. That said, its egg-crate shape makes it feel a bit softer versus a solid layer of foam.

The upper comfort and transition layers are made of moderately resilient polyfoam. These soft layers don't have a very springy feel, but respond quickly when you move. The lower comfort layer is made of less resilient memory foam, which is normal for that material, but since it's only 2.8 cm/1.1" thick, it doesn't create a typical memory foam feel. The firmer polyfoam support layer is much more resilient, which helps give the mattress a bit of bounce.
