If you like a mattress that feels like a hug, you might consider a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is soft and has low resilience, so you sink easily into it. Since memory foam is typically slow-moving, memory foam mattresses can offer good motion isolation, which is ideal if you sleep light or with a partner who tosses and turns. It contours closely, creating a feeling that your mattress is molding around your body, which can help relieve pressure. However, mattresses with a memory foam upper layer often respond slowly, making some sleepers feel unpleasantly stuck instead of comfortably cuddled. If you want a memory foam mattress you can still move around on easily, hybrid models or mattresses with more responsive foam layers can have a more responsive feel.
We've tested over 40 mattresses, and below, you'll find our recommendations for the best mattresses with memory foam. Most offer the classic slow-moving memory foam feel, but we've also included a responsive option that makes it easier to move around and change sleeping positions while still providing pressure relief and close contouring. Our recommendations include both foam and hybrid models, but they all have at least one memory foam comfort layer.
If you're not sure you want a memory foam mattress, check out our picks for the best mattresses for side sleepers, the best firm mattresses, and the best mattresses overall. If you're just beginning your mattress search, check out our firmness guide to learn about the fundamental role mattress firmness plays in pressure relief and support.
Quick Look
We've recently started testing mattresses. We independently purchase each unit from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free from manufacturer influence. Each mattress goes through the same tests to measure objective data for characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare the results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

If you're looking for a mattress with a classic memory foam feel that contours around your body and creates a hugging feeling, it's a good option. It has a medium firmness level, so it's a good choice for average and heavier side sleepers as well as average to lighter back and stomach sleepers. You sink deeply into its soft memory foam comfort layers compared with other mattresses of similar firmness, and it's moderately contouring, creating a hugging feel. Still, it doesn't mold around your body quite as closely as some mattresses. Its hybrid design, with a support layer of pocket coils, gives it its moderate bounciness, which helps make it a little easier to move around in bed. Still, its low responsiveness creates a hugging feel that can make some people feel stuck in place.
It offers excellent cooling. It doesn't feel warm during the first hour of sleep, and it dissipates heat efficiently all night, making it an amazing option if you sleep hot and cooling is a priority. Its great motion isolation means your partner's movements aren't as likely to wake you up. Unfortunately, edge support is a weak point. There's nothing special reinforcing the sides of the mattress, and they compress a lot when you sit or sleep on the edge of the mattress. This reduces the comfortable sleeping surface and makes getting in and out of bed more difficult, especially for people with mobility issues. Also, neither memory foam layer is dense enough to be considered good quality. These layers may sag sooner compared with higher-quality foams.

Best Memory Foam Mattress For Back/Stomach

This budget-friendly mattress is medium-firm, making it a better choice for back and stomach sleepers, since it provides enough support to keep the spine aligned. Like the Casper Snow, it's a hybrid mattress with a pocket coil support layer and a memory foam upper comfort layer. It's moderately bouncy and contouring, but you don't sink very deeply into it. This mattress is also decently responsive, so while you'll feel lightly hugged, it's less likely to make you feel held in place.
It has an excellent motion dissipation performance. You'll feel movements near the source, but not much motion moves across the mattress, and it dissipates quickly. It has decent edge support, so you can sit on the edge of the bed without feeling at risk of sliding off, but it's not ideal if you want to maximize the comfortable sleeping surface. This mattress has very good cooling, but unlike the Casper, it's not quite cooling enough for people who regularly sleep hot. The polyfoam layer is dense enough to be considered good quality, meaning it will resist sagging or forming permanent indentations longer compared with lower-quality foams. That's not the case for the memory foam layer, which is made of lower-quality foam.

Best Responsive Memory Foam Mattress
Sleeping (In Development)8.3Firmness LevelMedium-Plush (38 Pa/mm)Sinking LevelModerate (5 cm)Contouring LevelModerate (28 cm)Bounciness LevelModerate (17 cm)Responsiveness8.5Cooling7.8Motion Dissipation8.0See all our test resultsEdge Support9.0If you want a mattress that contours around your body but find some memory foam mattresses sluggish or restrictive, you might prefer the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid. This mattress is medium-plush, making it ideal for lighter and average-sized side sleepers who prefer a plush feel. It includes a memory foam layer, but it's below layers of more responsive polyfoam and fiber fill. As a result, it contours your body closely without making you feel held in place. This responsiveness, combined with moderate bounciness, makes it easier to move around on than our top pick, the Casper Snow.
This mattress provides good cooling performance, too. Like the Nectar Classic Hybrid, it won't cause a problem if you don't usually sleep hot, but it isn't quite cooling enough if you often feel overheated at night. It offers fantastic edge support, so you have more room to share with a partner, and it's easy to get in and out of bed. That said, its motion isolation is just okay. Movement is a little slow to dissipate, so you might feel the mattress wobble a bit with bigger movements, like when someone rolls over. The mattress's polyfoam upper comfort layer consists of dense, good-quality foam, but its other memory foam and polyfoam layers are lower quality and may begin to sag before denser foams.

Best Cheap Memory Foam Mattress

This is the all-foam version of the Nectar Classic Hybrid, and while it doesn't perform as well in some ways, it's a good option if you're looking for an inexpensive mattress. Its medium-firm feel makes it best-suited for back and stomach sleepers, and its memory foam upper comfort layer provides very high contouring, so it molds around your body. Its low bounce and slow responsiveness give it a classic memory foam feel, but may make you feel stuck in place.
It's not as cooling as the hybrid version. While it's not the least cooling mattress out there, it may make you feel a little warmer even if you're not usually a hot sleeper. However, you can sleep with a partner in peace thanks to its impressive motion isolation. Its edge support is passable, but it's also not an ideal mattress if you need sturdy edges for getting in and out of bed.
Notable Mentions
-
Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt:
The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt is an all-foam mattress with memory foam in the upper and lower comfort layers. It has a medium firmness, like the Casper Snow, and while it's not as cooling, it offers an even better motion isolation performance. You might prefer it for that reason, but it also has very little bounce and lower responsiveness, so it doesn't feel easy to move around on.

DreamCloud Premier Hybrid:
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is a good alternative to the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid if motion isolation is a priority. This responsive mattress has a quilted layer above its memory foam comfort layer, which helps make it very responsive, offering high contouring. Its edge support isn't as good, but its motion isolation is better, so light sleepers may prefer it.
