If you like a mattress that feels like a hug, you might consider a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is usually soft and highly contouring, which helps with pressure relief. Since it's typically slow-moving, memory foam mattresses can offer good motion isolation, which is ideal if you sleep light or with a partner who tosses and turns. However, mattresses with a memory foam upper layer can respond slowly, making some sleepers feel unpleasantly stuck instead of comfortably cuddled.

We've tested over 45 mattresses, and below you'll find our recommendations for the best mattresses with memory foam. Our recommendations include both foam and hybrid models, but all have memory foam comfort layers.

If you want a look at other types of mattresses, check out our picks for the best mattresses for side sleepers, the best firm mattresses, and the best mattresses overall.

How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've recently started testing mattresses. We independently purchase each unit from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free from manufacturer influence. Each mattress goes through the same tests to measure objective data for characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare the results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Memory Foam Mattress

The best memory foam mattress we've tested is the Casper Snow. This mattress's soft memory foam comfort layers give it a soft, enveloping feel. It's not very responsive, so it's a good option if you like a hugging feel. This Medium mattress is a good choice for average-weight and heavier side sleepers as well as average-weight to lighter back and stomach sleepers. Its hybrid design, with a support layer of pocket coils, gives it its moderate bounciness, which helps make it a little easier to move around in your sleep.

It offers excellent cooling. It doesn't feel warm during the first hour of sleep, and it dissipates heat efficiently all night, making it an amazing option if you sleep hot and cooling is a priority. Its great motion isolation means your partner's movements aren't as likely to wake you up. Unfortunately, edge support is a weak point. There's nothing special reinforcing the sides of the mattress, and they compress a lot when you sit or sleep on the mattress's edges. This reduces the comfortable sleeping surface and makes getting in and out of bed more difficult, especially for people with mobility issues. Also, neither memory foam layer is dense enough to be considered good quality. These layers may sag sooner compared with higher-quality foams.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress

If you're looking for a less expensive memory foam mattress, consider the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt. This Medium hybrid mattress has a classic memory foam feel, with low responsiveness and high contouring. This hugging feel helps with pressure relief, but you won't sink very deeply into it, which gives it a less enveloping feel than the Casper Snow. Its Medium firmness level makes it a good option for lighter back and stomach sleepers as well as average-weight and heavier side sleepers.

It's not very bouncy, which makes it feel harder to change sleeping positions, especially combined with its low responsiveness. However, it stands out for its fantastic motion dissipation. You won't feel most movements, and only for a moment, making it a great option for sleeping with a partner. It also offers good cooling and adequate edge support. It's moderately durable, with good-quality memory foam comfort layers, but its lower-density support foam may show signs of wear sooner.

  3. Best Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress

The best mid-range memory foam mattress we've tested is the Helix Midnight Luxe 2025. This hybrid mattress includes memory foam as a comfort layer and in the quilted layer. The quilted layer helps give it a more responsive feel than the previous picks, while the memory foam adds softness and moderate contouring. Its Medium firmness level makes it well-suited for average-weight and heavier side sleepers, as well as lighter back and stomach sleepers.

It's a moderately durable mattress, since aside from the foam in the quilted top, it uses good-quality foam. There are also firmer coils along the sides of the mattress for support, so you can sit or sleep comfortably on the side of the bed. It's great for hot sleeping, and its impressive motion dissipation makes it a good choice for sleeping with a partner. That said, if motion isolation is a priority for you, you might prefer one of the all-foam memory foam mattresses below.

  4. Best Budget Memory Foam Mattress

The Nectar Premier is the best budget-friendly memory foam mattress that we've tested. This all-foam mattress includes a memory foam upper comfort layer with an enveloping, responsive feel. It's highly contouring, which helps with pressure relief, but responds quickly when you move, so you won't feel tightly hugged. Its Medium firmness level makes it a good choice for lighter back and stomach sleepers as well as average-weight and heavier side sleepers.

It's cooling enough for hot sleepers and also offers excellent motion dissipation, so you can sleep peacefully with a partner. However, it's not very durable. Aside from the support layer, it's made of low-quality foam, which is prone to forming permanent indentations sooner. The edge support is also disappointing, so it's not ideal if you sleep near the edge or need sturdy sides for getting in and out of bed.

  5. Best Cheap Memory Foam Mattress

The best cheap memory foam mattress that we've tested is the Nectar Classic Hybrid. This all-foam mattress's upper comfort layer gives it a highly contouring and slightly slow-moving feel. It's Medium-Firm, making it best suited for light and average-weight back and stomach sleepers as well as heavier side sleepers. While it isn't very responsive, its spring layer adds bounciness, which helps make it feel easier to move around in your sleep.

While its motion isolation performance isn't quite as good as the Nectar Premier's, it's still excellent, which helps make movements less likely to wake you. It's also cooling enough to keep most people comfortable and offers decent edge support. However, its memory foam layer is made of low-quality memory foam, which makes it prone to forming permanent indentations sooner than mattresses with higher-quality foams.
