Best Mattress For Heavy People

The best mattresses for heavy people offer solid support without sacrificing cozy comfort layers or pressure relief. While firmer mattresses are generally recommended for heavier individuals, some Medium-Firm and Medium mattresses still offer good support and are often better for side sleeping. Mattresses specifically designed for heavier people often have a higher weight rating to ensure comfort and durability. Whether a mattress is designed for a specific weight category or not, sturdy edges and durable materials are also a consideration.

We've tested more than 50 mattresses, and these are our recommendations for the best options for people in the heavier weight category, defined here as 110 kg/242 lb. If you want to see more options, check out the best firm mattresses, the best hybrid mattresses, and the best mattresses overall.

How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've recently started testing mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Mattress For Heavy People

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is the best mattress for heavy people that we've tested. This Firm hybrid mattress offers great durability and decent support for heavier people. It's a particularly good option for side sleepers, since it offers excellent body conformity for people in this weight category, ensuring your shoulder can sink in enough for proper pressure relief. Its latex comfort layers contour around you closely, which also helps add cushioning and pressure relief. The mattress has a springy, responsive feel, so your movements feel supported, and you don't feel stuck in place.

The comfort layer is the only foam in the mattress and is made of high-quality latex, which helps it resist forming permanent body impressions for longer. Firmer coils along each side of the mattress give it very sturdy edges, and it's cooling enough for hot sleepers. That said, while it offers satisfactory support for back and side sleepers in the heavier weight category, you may want one of the more supportive options below if you sleep on your stomach.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Mattress For Heavy People

The Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic is worth considering if you sleep on your stomach or just prefer a firmer feel. This all-foam latex mattress is very firm, even compared to other Firm mattresses, which helps it offer impressive support for heavier people. It's a great option for back and stomach sleepers, since it'll keep you evenly supported and help keep your spine aligned. The springy, responsive latex comfort layers seem to push back against your movements, making it feel easy to move around on. It's definitely a mattress you sleep 'on' and not 'in,' but the sleeping surface is highly contouring, which helps add some pressure relief.

While it's not as cooling as the Saatva Latex Hybrid, it's still a good option for hot sleepers, and its fantastically sturdy edges provide a solid surface for getting in and out of bed. The layers are all made of high-quality latex, which will help the mattress resist sagging for longer. However, its body conformity for heavier people is just decent. If you sleep on your side, a more conforming mattress will better reduce pressure on your arm and shoulder.

  3. Best Mid-Range Mattress For Heavy People

If you want to spend a bit less, the Tuft and Needle Mint is a mid-range option that can suit a variety of sleeping styles. This Medium mattress's versatile performance makes it a good option if you're looking for the best mattress for heavy couples, or if you change sleeping positions frequently. Its polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers allow significant sinking, giving it a pillowy, conforming feel that relieves pressure for side sleepers. And, unlike some plusher mattresses, it also offers good support for people in the heavier weight category, making it suitable for back and stomach sleeping as well.

Its fantastic motion dissipation performance also helps make it a great option for couples, since compared to the previous picks, you'll hardly feel any of your partner's movements. It's cool enough for hot sleepers and has sturdy edges, so you can sleep comfortably near the side of the bed. However, it's not as durable as the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic. It uses both good-quality and low-quality foam, which may cause it to show signs of wear, like permanenent indentations, sooner.

  4. Best Budget Mattress For Heavy People

If you're looking for a budget-friendly mattress, consider the Casper Cooling Select. This bed-in-a-box mattress is available at Costco (U.S.) and has a Medium firmness level. It offers a good balance of support and pressure relief for people in the heavier weight category, making it a solid option for side, back, and stomach sleepers. While it's not an enveloping mattress overall, it still allows your shoulder to sink in enough for comfortable side sleep. Meanwhile, a zoned transition layer adds extra support for your hips, and it does a good job of keeping your spine aligned for back and stomach sleeping.

Its motion dissipation isn't as good as the Tuft and Needle Mint's, but it's still excellent, so you won't feel your partner's every move. However, despite its name, it's not quite cooling enough for persistently hot sleepers. Similarly, its edge support is good, but not great, so if you want sturdy edges for getting in and out of bed, it may not be ideal. Like the previous pick, its mix of good and low-quality foams makes it moderately durable.

  5. Best Cheap Mattress For Heavier People

The Allswell Hybrid is a great option if you don't want to spend much, but still want solid support. This inexpensive, Medium-Firm mattress has a firm coil layer that helps it offer decent support for heavier back and stomach sleepers. The comfort layers are on the firmer side as well, but are highly contouring, which helps the mattress provide pressure relief for heavier side sleepers. Overall, while it's not very enveloping, you might prefer it if you like sleeping 'on' rather than 'in' your mattress. It's also bouncy and responsive, which helps make it feel easy to move around in your sleep.

It's cooling enough for hot sleepers and offers excellent motion dissipation, so you can sleep peacefully with a partner. The edges are reinforced with stiffer coils, providing excellent edge support. However, it's not as durable as the previous picks. While it includes one layer of good-quality polyfoam, its upper layers aren't as durable and will be more prone to forming permanent indentations sooner.

Notable Mentions

  • Bear Elite Hybrid:

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a high-end Medium mattress. It's marginally more supportive than the Saatva Latex Hybrid for heavier people, but unlike the Saatva, it isn't cooling enough for hot sleepers. It also only contains lower-quality, lower-density foams, so it may start to show signs of wear, like sagging or body impressions, sooner.

  • Big Fig Mattress:

The Big Fig Mattress is a Medium hybrid mattress designed for people in the heavier weight category. It's a good option for side sleeping, and all its foam layers are made of good or high-quality material. However, it's not cooling enough for hot sleepers, unlike the Saatva Latex Hybrid.

  • Casper Snow:

The Casper Snow is a Medium hybrid mattress that offers very good support for heavier people. You'll also sink significantly into it, so it's more enveloping than the Saatva Latex Hybrid and offers better pressure relief. However, unlike that mattress, it has low responsiveness, creating a slow-moving feel that might make you feel stuck, and it's much less durable.
