The Casper Cooling Select is a cheap all-foam bed-in-a-box available exclusively at Costco U.S. This Medium mattress has a polyfoam support layer, zoned transition layer, and comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam. All the foam layers are CertiPUR certified, meaning that they're lower in hazardous chemicals and heavy metals.

Our Verdict

7.4
Side Sleeping

The Casper Cooling Select mattress is best suited to average- and heavier-weight side sleepers. If you fall into either of those categories, your shoulders and hips will sink far enough into the mattress to relieve pressure. Lighter-weight sleepers, on the other hand, won't compress the mattress enough, creating uncomfortable pressure on the shoulder. Regardless of your weight, you don't sink very far into the comfort layer, and they don't contour you very closely either, so lighter sleepers don't get much additional pressure relief here.

Pros
  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Great body conformity for average-weight sleepers.

Cons
  • Inadequate body conformity for lighter-weight sleepers.

7.4
Back Sleeping

The Casper Cooling Select mattress is a good choice for lighter and heavier-weight back sleepers. It's supportive enough to keep the heavier parts of your body lifted, so your spine stays in a straight line. It's not quite as good for average-weight back sleepers. It still provides decent support for sleepers in this category, but depending on your preferences, you may want a mattress with sturdier support.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter and heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Decent support for average-weight sleepers.

Cons
None
7.5
Stomach Sleeping

The Casper Cooling Select mattress is a good option for lighter and heavier-weight stomach sleepers. If you fall into either of these categories, this mattress will provide enough support to keep your back from arching. Average-weight sleepers will get a little less support. It's still a decent choice for sleepers in this category, but if you know you like a firmer feel, you may also want something more supportive.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter and heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Decent support for average-weight sleepers.

Cons
None
6.7
Longevity

The Casper Cooling Select mattress is reasonably durable. The upper comfort layer is made of dense, high-quality polyfoam, while both the transition and support layers are made of good-quality polyfoam. The lower comfort layer, however, is made of low-density, low-quality memory foam, making it the weak point in the mattress. Overall, it will resist sagging longer than mattresses with only low-density foam, but not as long as those without any low-quality layers.

Pros
  • Uses mostly good- and high-quality foam, increasing durability.

Cons
  • Low-quality memory foam comfort layer may cause premature sagging.

7.3
Pressure Relief

The Casper Cooling Select mattress offers varying levels of pressure relief, depending on your weight category. It provides fantastic body conformity for heavier-weight sleepers who compress the mattress most. These sleepers will sink into the mattress enough to relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders when sleeping on their sides. It also provides great body conformity for people in the average-weight category, but lighter-weight sleepers won't compress the mattress enough, leading to uncomfortable pressure points. It's also not a very enveloping mattress, so regardless of your weight, you won't experience much sinking or contouring.

Pros
  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Great body conformity for average-weight sleepers.

Cons
  • Inadequate body conformity for lighter-weight sleepers.

7.5
Support

The Casper Cooling Select mattress provides good support for most sleepers. If you're in the heavier or lighter weight categories, it keeps the heaviest parts of your body lifted, so your spine stays aligned. It's a bit less supportive for those in the average-weight category, and while it still offers decent performance, some back and stomach sleepers in this category may want a mattress with more robust support.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter and heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Decent support for average-weight sleepers.

Cons
None
7.9
Cooling

The Casper Cooling Select mattress provides very good cooling, though it's not quite cooling enough for hot sleepers. Its cooling is less efficient at the start of the night, but after the first hour, it transfers heat more quickly, keeping you cool for the rest of the night.

Pros
  • Cooling enough for most people.

Cons
None
8.6
Motion Dissipation

The Casper Cooling Select mattress does an excellent job of dissipating motion. You feel movement nearby, but it doesn't travel across the mattress, and it doesn't last long. So, if your sleeping partner rolls over, you feel it in the lumbar region, but only briefly, and you don't feel it throughout the rest of the mattress.

Pros
  • Excellent motion dissipation means movement is less likely to disturb you.

Cons
None
8.3
Responsiveness

The Casper Cooling Select mattress is impressively responsive, making it easy to move around and switch sleeping positions. It's not very bouncy, which makes it a bit more difficult, but that's typical of a memory foam mattress.

Pros
  • Very responsive, so changing sleeping positions is easy.

Cons
  • Not very bouncy, which can leave you feeling 'stuck.'

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Casper Cooling Select is available exclusively at Costco in four sizes: Full, Queen, King, and California King. They also carry a hybrid version under the same name, the Casper Cooling Select 12" Hybrid Medium Firm Mattress. We tested the Queen-sized all-foam version, and our results are only valid for that variant. See the label for our unit.

If you encounter another variant, let us know in the comments, and we'll add it to our review.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Casper Cooling Select is an affordable all-foam medium mattress available exclusively at Costco U.S. It's a pretty versatile mattress, which is suitable for most sleepers. However, it can't match the support or body conformity of the pricier Casper Snow, which is a better choice, especially for lighter-weight side sleepers. It's not quite as cooling as the Casper Snow either; it transfers heat effectively enough to keep most sleepers cool, but if you persistently sleep hot, it won't be effective enough. The Cooling Select doesn't offer as much contouring as many memory foam mattresses, so if you prefer a 'hugging' feel, the Nectar Premier might be a better fit. And if longevity is your priority, you should look for something with more layers of dense foam, like the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic, which uses high-quality latex. That being said, it's more durable than many pricier options, so if you're looking for an inexpensive, all-foam option that won't start sagging too soon, it's a surprisingly good pick.

    DreamCloud Classic Hybrid

The Casper Cooling Select and the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid have some significant differences, and either may be a good choice, depending on your preferences. The Casper is a medium all-foam mattress that stands out for its excellent motion dissipation. You'll feel less movement across the mattress, making it a good choice for partnered sleepers. It's also more durable, so it's less likely to start sagging prematurely. The DreamCloud is a medium-plush hybrid mattress with fantastic responsiveness, so it's easy to move around and change sleeping positions. It also has fantastic edge support, so you may prefer it if you like to sleep near the edge and don't want to worry about slipping off.

    Helix Midnight Luxe 2025

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2025 and the Casper Cooling Select offer different benefits, and you may prefer either depending on your priorities. The Helix is a medium hybrid mattress that offers slightly better cooling, so it's a better choice if you sleep hot. It's also bouncier and more responsive, so it's easier to move around on. The Casper is a medium all-foam mattress with better motion isolation, so you may prefer it if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns throughout the night.

    Novaform ComfortGrande Plus

The medium Casper Cooling Select is a better choice for most people than the medium-firm Novaform ComfortGrande Plus. The Casper offers a little more support and body conformity, making it more comfortable for a range of sleepers, though neither is a good choice for lighter side sleepers. The Casper is also a little more cooling and a lot more responsive, making it easier to change sleeping positions. On the other hand, the Novaform is better at isolating motion, so you may still prefer it if you or your sleeping partner tends to toss and turn.

    Novaform Serafina Pearl

The Casper Cooling Select is a better mattress than the Novaform Serafina Pearl. Both are medium all-foam mattresses, but the Casper offers better performance in a few areas. It's slightly more cooling, though neither option is quite cooling enough for hot sleepers. It's also more responsive, so it's easier to move around on. And it does a better job of isolating motion, so you'll feel less movement across the mattress, making it a better choice if you're a light sleeper or if you sleep with a partner.

The Casper Cooling Select mattress has a Medium firmness level. It offers enough body conformity for average- and heavier-weight side sleepers, and enough support for most back and stomach sleepers, though average-weight sleepers may prefer something a little firmer. Lighter-weight stomach sleepers should consider something softer, which allows the hips and shoulders to sink further and relieve pressure.

    90 mm (3.5")

This mattress is most conforming for heavier-weight sleepers, who compress the mattress most. Sleepers in this category will sink far enough into the mattress to relieve pressure on the lower back, or the shoulders and hips when side sleeping. It also performs well in this regard for average-weight sleepers, but lighter-weight sleepers won't compress the mattress enough for comfort, leading to painful pressure points.

This mattress offers a similar level of support regardless of your body weight. It's most supportive for sleepers in the lighter and heavier weight categories. If you fall into these categories, your hips won't sink much farther into the mattress than the rest of your body, keeping your spine in a straight line. It's only a bit less supportive for average-weight sleepers, so the heaviest parts of your body stay decently supported, though back and stomach sleepers in this category may want something a bit more supportive.

    6.3
    Bounciness
    Maximum Rebound Height
    9.0 cm (3.5")

It's not very bouncy, which makes it feel a little harder to move around on. That said, this is typically the case with all-foam, and especially memory foam mattresses.

    27.4 cm (10.8")

The comfort layers aren't particularly enveloping. The polyfoam upper comfort layer is firmer than the memory foam layer below, so you don't sink very far, and it doesn't contour you very closely. This leaves you feeling like you're sleeping more 'on' than 'in' the mattress.

It's a very responsive mattress. It recovers quickly after you compress it, supporting each movement, so it's easy to shift positions and move around on the surface.

It has excellent motion isolation. You feel movement nearby, so if your pet hops onto the foot of the bed, you'll feel it around your feet, but very little movement travels across the mattress, so you won't notice it anywhere else. Movement dissipates exceptionally fast, too, so it's less likely to disturb you or wake you up.

There's nothing extra reinforcing the sides of this mattress, but it still provides good edge support. While you compress the mattress a fair bit when you sit down, the mattress doesn't compress much more near the edges than in the center. This creates a very small ramp, but not enough to make you feel like you might slip off.

The cover contains 59% polyester, 40% polyethylene, and 1% spandex. The polyethylene fibers provide a cooling effect, which the manufacturer says makes the cover "cool to the touch." While it has a zipper, they warn that the cover shouldn't be removed and isn't machine-washable.

There are four layers of foam in this mattress. The upper comfort layer is polyfoam, and the lower comfort layer is memory foam. This configuration provides a responsive surface that's easy to move around on, while maintaining good body conformity. Below the comfort layers, there's a zoned polyfoam transition layer and polyfoam support layer, which also help make the mattress a bit more resilient and easier to move around on. All the foam layers are CertiPUR certified, meaning that they're lower in hazardous chemicals and heavy metals.

This mattress uses a combination of low-quality, good-quality, and high-quality foam. The upper comfort layer is made of dense, high-quality polyfoam, and the lower comfort layer is made of low-density, poor-quality memory foam. While we've included an average density for the transition layer, the zoned sections at the head/foot and lumbar actually have slightly different densities:

    Head/Foot: 27kg/m³ 1.69 lb/cu ft)
    Lumbar: 29kg/m³ (1.81 lb/cu ft)

The polyfoam support layer is dense enough to be considered good quality, though it doesn't meet the cut-off for high quality. Overall, this mattress provides alright durability, but it will begin to sag and form indents faster than models with more layers of high-quality foam. It's worth noting, however, that it's significantly more durable than the much pricier Casper Snow.

Both of the comfort layers are 1.5" (3.8 cm) thick. You'll likely sink through the upper comfort layer and slightly compress the lower comfort layer. The transition layer is zoned, with separate sections of polyfoam at the head/foot and lumbar regions. They have different firmness levels but the same 1.4" (3.5 cm) thickness. The polyfoam support layer is 7.5" (19 cm) thick.

In a reversal of the typical memory foam mattress construction, the foam layers are firmest at the top of the mattress and get softer as you go down. The polyfoam upper comfort layer is medium-soft, while the lower comfort layer is soft. Below that, the zoned transition layer is even softer, though it's a little firmer in the lumbar region, providing extra support for your hips. This design seems to prioritize responsiveness over envelopment, so it's easy to move around on the surface, while you don't sink very far down or experience much contouring from the comfort layers. The support layer is still the firmest layer overall, with a medium-firm feel. Together, the layers result in a medium-firm mattress which leaves you feeling like you're sleeping more 'on' than 'in' it.

The upper comfort layer is less resilient than typical polyfoam. The manufacturer mentions that this layer is breathable, open-cell foam, but they don't provide more detailed information. Still, this departure from standard polyfoam likely explains this discrepancy. The memory foam lower comfort layer is much less resilient, but this is expected for the material. The zoned transition layer is quite resilient at the head/feet, but less so at the lumbar:

Foam Layer Resilience Transition Foam @ Lumbar: 35%

The reduced resilience, or bounciness, in the lumbar region allows your hips to sink in gradually, offering a bit more pressure relief in this area. The polyfoam support layer below offers the most resilience, making the mattress feel easier to move around on overall. Combined, the layers produce a mattress that isn't particularly bouncy, though that's common for an all-foam mattress, especially one with memory foam.
