Hybrid mattresses, as the name suggests, are a cross between foam and innerspring mattresses. Most hybrids feature a layer of individually wrapped pocket springs, topped by at least one polyfoam, memory foam, or latex comfort layer. Ideally, this combo provides a good mix of pressure relief and support, suitable for sleepers with a range of body types and sleeping positions. You should also look for good motion dissipation and responsiveness, so it's easy to shift sleeping positions without feeling it when your sleeping partner rolls over. If you sleep hot, you'll also want to look for an option with efficient cooling. And of course, your preferences for how much you want to be enveloped by the comfort layers should also come into play. Finally, if durability is a priority for you, look for a mattress with dense, high-quality foam layers.

We've tested more than 45 mattresses, and over 30 of those are hybrids. Below, you'll find our recommendations for the best hybrid mattresses for most people. If you're wondering what else we recommend, see our picks for the best mattresses, the best mattress brands, or the best cooling mattresses.

How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've recently started testing mattresses. We independently purchase each unit from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free from manufacturer influence. Each mattress goes through the same tests to measure objective data for characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare the results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Hybrid Mattress

The best hybrid mattress we've tested is the Casper Snow. Above its support layer of pocket coils, this mattress has three layers of soft memory foam. This design offers an impressive combination of support and pressure relief that works well for most sleepers, regardless of weight or sleeping position. Surprisingly, given the memory foam layers, it's not very contouring. However, you sink quite deeply into this mattress, so you feel like you're sleeping more 'in' than 'on' it, without being tightly hugged. At the same time, though, it's not very bouncy and lacks responsiveness, which can make it feel hard to move around or change sleeping positions.

The biggest advantage of the Casper Snow is its cooling. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers, keeping you cool as you fall asleep, and especially as the night goes on. Excellent motion dissipation also makes it a great choice if you sleep lightly or sleep with a partner. You don't feel smaller movements and even larger ones, like when your partner rolls over, it doesn't travel throughout the mattress, and it doesn't last long. Unfortunately, it's not a durable option. It contains only low-quality foam, which makes it likely to show signs of wear and tear faster than mattresses with higher-quality foam.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Hybrid Mattress

The Big Fig Mattress is another great choice, at a lower price. It's a medium hybrid marketed toward plus-sized individuals, though it can be a good choice for average-weight to heavier side sleepers, as well as lighter to average-weight stomach and back sleepers. This mattress contains a very dense layer of pocket springs, topped with layers of polyfoam, latex foam, and fiber fill. This design gives it an exceptionally bouncy and responsive feel, making it very easy to move around on and ensuring you never feel restricted. It allows you to sink through the quilted top and into the comfort layers, which offer moderate contouring, so you feel cradled and lightly hugged, but not enveloped.

If you're looking for a durable mattress, you'll be happy to hear that the Big Fig contains only good-quality and high-quality foam, so it'll resist sagging. It also offers impressive motion isolation, making it a great choice if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns. Unfortunately, it only offers decent cooling, so unlike the Casper Snow, it's not cooling enough for hot sleepers.

  3. Best Mid-Range Hybrid Mattress

If you're shopping at a mid-range price point, consider the Beautyrest Mattress, a medium-firm hybrid. It features several layers of memory foam and polyfoam above a support layer of pocket coils, including a quilted top with a layer of each foam type and fiber fill. This gives it a cushioned feel and lets you sink in pretty far. It doesn't conform very closely to your body, so while you feel cradled, you don't feel very tightly hugged. It doesn't bounce back as quickly as the Big Fig Mattress, but it's still very responsive and bouncy, which makes it very easy to move around on. Although it's not as versatile as our top pick, this mattress is a very good choice for average-weight and heavier side sleepers, as well as lighter-weight back and stomach sleepers. Lighter-weight side sleepers, however, should avoid this pick.

While this mattress isn't quite cooling enough for hot sleepers, it transfers enough heat to keep most people comfortable. It also provides impressive motion dissipation. You do feel movement across the mattress, but it only lasts a moment, making it less likely to disturb or wake you. However, it only contains one layer of good-quality foam, the polyfoam layer in the quilted top. The other layers are less dense, low-quality foam, making the mattress overall prone to sagging and permanent indentations.

  4. Best Budget Hybrid Mattress

The best hybrid we've tested at a budget-friendly price is the Boring Hybrid, a mattress with a medium-plush feel available for well under $1000. It has a simple design, with two layers of Energex-branded polyfoam above a pocket-spring support layer. This type of polyfoam aims to combine the contouring of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex. However, the mattress as a whole is not very contouring, though you do sink fairly deeply into the comfort layers. On the other hand, it's a very bouncy, responsive, and easy to move around on. Combined, these aspects make it ideal for heavier-weight side sleepers and a good choice for average-weight side sleepers and lighter-weight back and stomach sleepers. Lighter-weight side sleepers, however, should look elsewhere.

This hybrid has better cooling than the Beautyrest Mattress, making it a great choice for hot sleepers, especially those who tend to overheat later in the night. It provides excellent motion dissipation, so you don't feel smaller movements, and even larger ones aren't felt across the whole mattress or last long. It's also one of the most durable mattresses we've tested so far, thanks to dense, high-quality foam that resists sagging.

  5. Best Cheap Hybrid Mattress

If you're looking for the best hybrid mattress at the lowest possible price, consider the Allswell Hybrid, a medium-firm option. Above its pocket spring support layer, this mattress has layers of polyfoam, memory foam, and fiber fill, which give it a pretty bouncy and responsive feel. You don't sink very far into this mattress, but it forms closely around your body, giving it a hugging feel. Although its support and pressure relief are both unremarkable overall, it's still a great pick for heavier-weight side sleepers and lighter-weight back and stomach sleepers. It also offers better support for heavier back and stomach sleepers than either the Beautyrest Mattress or the Boring Hybrid. However, lighter side sleepers who won't sink in far enough for comfort.

Like our budget pick, this mattress is cooling enough for hot sleepers, especially after the first hour of the night. It's also an excellent option if you sleep lightly or with a partner, thanks to its motion-isolation performance. You only feel the largest movements, and they don't last for long, so they're not likely to wake you. Unfortunately, it's not particularly durable, but it still contains one layer of good-quality foam, which is more than some much pricier options.

Notable Mentions

  • Saatva Latex Hybrid:

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a firm mattress with exceptional responsiveness. It doesn't dissipate motion as well as the Casper Snow, and it's not quite as cooling, but it's more durable, so it'll resist sagging for longer.
