The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 is a mid-range innerspring mattress. Its 'Dual Cool' cover material and corrugated foam comfort layer are advertised for cooling, while its pocket spring support layer helps with motion isolation versus other types of springs. This mattress also has additional memory foam in the lumbar area.

It's medium-firm, making it best suited for light and average back and stomach sleepers. It may not be soft enough for light and average side sleepers or firm enough for bigger stomach or back sleepers who want a really firm mattress. This innerspring mattress is bouncy and responsive. It contours your body a bit, but you don't sink very deeply into it or feel stuck in place.

Our Verdict

8.5
Sleeping (In Development)

The Beautyrest Silver is offers an excellent sleeping experience. It has decent motion isolation, so while you'll feel more of your partner's movements compared with an all-foam mattress, you won't feel it every time they stir, so shifts in position are less likely to wake you. The mattress's fantastic edge support helps give you more room to share without feeling like you're slipping off the side. It won't make hot sleepers hotter, and it's very responsive, avoiding any feeling of being stuck in place.

Pros
  • Superb edge support.

  • Fantastic responsiveness, so you can easily change sleeping positions.

  • Good cooling.

  • Good option for most back and stomach sleepers.

  • Motion dissipates quickly, so you only feel motion briefly.

Cons
  • You'll feel most movements.

  • Heavier back/stomach sleepers may want something firmer.

  • Too firm for most side sleepers.

  • Uses only low-quality foam.

7.7
Cooling

The Beautyrest Silver offers very good cooling. It should keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night if you don't usually have an issue with overheating while you sleep. However, for hot sleepers, it may not be cooling enough, especially if you're often bothered by heat during the first hour or so in bed, when you're trying to fall asleep.

Pros
  • Good cooling.

Cons
None
7.4
Motion Dissipation

The Beautyrest Silver offers decent motion dissipation. As a spring mattress, it doesn't isolate movement like all-foam mattresses, but it has pocket coils, which transfer less movement compared with continuous coils. When your partner rolls over, you'll feel some motion in the lumbar and head areas. However, it dissipates quickly, so you won't wake up with every little movement.

Pros
  • Motion dissipates quickly, so you only feel motion briefly.

Cons
  • You'll feel most movements.

9.8
Edge Support

The Beautyrest Silver has fantastic edge support. Its edges are reinforced with firm foam, so sitting on or sleeping near the side of the bed won't cause a lot of compression. You won't feel like you're sliding off when you're sleeping on one side, so you can really use the whole mattress surface.

Pros
  • Superb edge support.

Cons
None
9.8
Responsiveness

The Beautyrest Silver is very responsive. This mattress is mostly made of polyfoam and pocket coils, and recovers its original shape pretty much instantly after being compressed. You won't feel stuck in place, which is especially important if you change positions frequently as you sleep.

Pros
  • Fantastic responsiveness, so you can easily change sleeping positions.

Cons
None
2.8
Longevity

The Beautyrest Silver isn't a durable mattress. None of the foam layers is dense enough to meet the standard for good quality, so they'll degrade faster than higher-quality foams. As a result, you can expect the mattress to sag and lose its shape faster than models made with better-quality foam.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Uses only low-quality foam.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Beautyrest Silver is available in various sizes and firmness ratings, depending on the retailer. It's available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes, as well as Medium (12 inches), Extra Firm (12 inches), and Plush (15 inches). We tested the Queen-sized 'Medium' variant (Beautyrest 12-inch Silver BRS900 Medium Firm Mattress). Here's a picture of our unit's label.

If you have the Beautyrest Silver or another variant, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Beautyrest Silver is a hybrid mattress with fantastic edge support, making it a particularly good option for people with mobility issues or those who just sleep close to the edge of the bed. While it's fairly good at cooling sleepers throughout the night, hot sleepers will prefer options like the Purple Mattress since it offers much better cooling performance, especially while falling asleep. Just know this mattress has a more contouring feel. The Beautyrest Silver is also too firm for many side sleepers. If you want a plusher mattress with a somewhat similar feel, you might prefer the Beautyrest Harmony Lux. That model has a medium firmness level, and you sink more into it, but it also offers better motion isolation.

    Beautyrest Mattress

The Beautyrest Mattress is better than the Beautyrest Silver BRS900. Both have a medium-firm feel, but the Beautyrest Mattress is more supportive for all weight categories and offers better body conformity for heavier people. This makes it a stronger option for average/heavier back sleepers and heavier side sleepers. It also offers better motion isolation, so light sleepers may prefer it. The Silver has a more responsive feel, which you may prefer if you move around a lot in your sleep.

    Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 and the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn have different strengths. They're both medium-firm, but the Beautyrest contours around you more, while you'll sink more deeply into the Sealy's upper layers. The Beautyrest is bouncier and more responsive, so it's much easier to move around on. The Sealy has a slower-moving feel, but a better motion dissipation performance, so you might prefer it for sleeping with a partner.

Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance
Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance

We've recently started testing mattresses. We use objective data and repeatable testing for key characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, to ensure each mattress gets the same treatment. Since we buy all of our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials. Our approach gives us unprecedented insight into how each product design decision contributes to a mattress's overall performance and feel, and allows us to tailor our results to different body types and sleeping positions.

It's a medium-firm mattress, best suited for average back and stomach sleepers. Heavier side sleepers may also find it comfortable, but it may be too firm for average to light side sleepers. The extra strip of memory foam in the lumbar area doesn't make it firmer or softer, but you can feel the extra material in that area, and if you're a back sleeper, it can help fill in the space under your lower back.

This mattress doesn't do a good job of isolating movement. You'll feel big and small movements, like when your partner rolls over or shifts in place, throughout your head, feet, and lumbar areas. If you're a light sleeper, you'll likely wake up throughout the night as a result. On the plus side, motion dissipates quickly, so you won't feel like the mattress wobbles around for a long time whenever someone moves.

The Beautyrest Silver has fantastic edge support. The edges of the bed are reinforced with firm foam and don't compress much when you sit or lie on the edge. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed and ensures you don't feel like you're about to slide off when you're sleeping on the edge.

The Beautyrest BRS900 has a good cooling performance. It won't make you feel warmer if you don't usually sleep hot. However, hot sleepers may want a mattress with better cooling. It's not great at dissipating heat during the first hour or so, so it's most likely to create a problem if you often feel overheated as you're falling asleep.

The upper comfort layer is made of quilted fiber and polyfoam, and you'll easily sink into it and feel the next layer of slightly firmer polyfoam. There's also a strip of memory foam across the mattress's lumbar area. This strip of foam is noticeable when lying on the mattress—it doesn't make it firmer or softer, but simply feels like more material in that area. This might help fill in gaps between your lower back and the mattress when sleeping on your back.

None of the foam layers is dense enough to be considered good quality. Compared with higher-quality foams, they'll start to sag, form permanent indentations, and break down sooner.

This mattress has three inches of foam above its pocket coil layer. The upper quilted layer is really soft and just 2" thick, so you'll probably compress it completely and interact with the somewhat firmer polyfoam layer below. There's also a 0.5" strip of memory foam in the lumbar area. As this is where most of your weight is likely concentrated, it adds some extra cushioning under your lower back while also helping you avoid feeling the springs too much if you compress the upper layers.

The support layer is made of pocket coils, which are individually encased in fabric and offer better contouring and motion isolation compared with other kinds of springs. The 15-gauge springs are on the softer side, but since the layer is very dense, it's feels firmer overall. The spring layer gives the mattress its firmness, as the foam layers above are all quite soft, and helps provide support for the heavier parts of your body.

The quilted upper comfort layer is very soft, so you'll easily compress it and feel the slightly firmer polyfoam layer below. The strip of memory foam in the lumbar area is also soft, which allows you to sink into it if your hips compress both layers above.

The foam used in the quilted comfort layer and upper comfort foam has a good amount of bounce. This helps give the mattress a bouncy feel, so you can easily move around in your sleep. That said, the lower comfort foam isn't very resilient, which is expected for memory foam. This adds a little bit of plushness in that area, but doesn't affect the overall feel of the mattress much, since it's a 0.5" layer that's only in the lumbar area.

The springs have a lot of bounce, so they push back when pressure is applied, which, along with the fairly bouncy foam layers, helps give the mattress its noticeable bounciness. This makes it feel easy to move around on the mattress.
