Shopping for a new mattress can feel very personal. Your sleeping position and body composition play a huge role, meaning that a comfortable mattress for others might not translate into a comfortable mattress for you. Of course, your preferences for a cooling, bouncy, responsive, or contouring mattress also come into play, making things even more complicated. Luckily, that doesn't mean mattress shopping is a shot in the dark. Below, we've rounded up the best mattresses for most people with options for different sleeping positions and preferences.

We've tested more than 50 mattresses on a standardized test bench so you can compare how they feel and perform with data. We also recently updated our testing methodology so you can see how a mattress performs for your specific weight and sleeping position.

If you're looking for the convenient delivery that comes with a bed-in-a-box, check out our recommendations for the best options. If you sleep on your side, you might be interested in one of the best mattresses for side sleeping. How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've recently started testing mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Mattress

The best mattress we've tested for a variety of sleeping positions and weight ranges is the Casper Snow. This medium hybrid mattress has a support layer of pocket coils and memory foam comfort layers. This gives it a highly contouring, enveloping feel that helps with pressure relief. It offers just decent body conformity for lighter sleepers, but provides excellent performance in this regard for average-weight and heavier sleepers. At the same time, it delivers very good support for heavier sleepers and is even more supportive for lighter sleepers. This makes it a decent choice regardless of your weight or sleeping position, though heavier side sleepers and lighter back and stomach sleepers will be most comfortable.

This mattress stands out for its excellent cooling performance. While memory foam tends to retain heat, it compensates with specialized cooling features, including aluminum-graphite strips, making it a good choice for hot sleepers. It's also ideal for partnered sleepers, as its excellent motion isolation means you won't be disturbed by every little move your partner makes. That said, the contouring memory foam comfort layers can make it hard to move around. Unfortunately, it's not very durable, either. The foam in the mattress is lower-density, lower-quality foam prone to forming permanent indentations sooner than higher-quality foam. If ease of movement or durability are priorities for you, you might prefer the Helix Midnight Luxe 2025, which performs better in both of these areas.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Mattress

The Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic is the best upper mid-range mattress we've tested if you're looking for a firmer option for back/stomach sleeping. It offers consistent, impressive support regardless of your weight, so it'll support your hips and lumbar area, keeping your spine aligned if you sleep on your back or stomach. This very firm, all-latex mattress is a particularly good option if you don't find the Casper Snow's enveloping, slow-moving feel very appealing. You don't sink very far into it at all, so you'll feel like you're sleeping 'on' it instead of 'in' it. It's also super responsive, so you won't feel hugged or constricted.

It's also a very durable mattress, since it's entirely made of high-quality latex, which will resist showing signs of wear for longer. Despite its all-foam design, it offers great cooling, so it's a suitable option for hot sleepers. However, if you sleep with a partner, it's worth noting that its motion isolation isn't as strong as the Casper. While you'll feel most movements only near the source, and they dissipate quickly, it may not be ideal if you sleep lightly. It's also worth noting that its very firm feel makes it unsuitable for most side sleepers. While it'll offer decent pressure relief for heavier individuals, you still might prefer a plusher mattress, and it'll be uncomfortable for average-weight and lighter side sleepers.

  3. Best Mid-Range Mattress

The Tuft and Needle Mint is the best mid-range mattress that we've tested. This all-foam Medium mattress offers solid support and pressure relief for most people, making it suitable for a range of sleeping positions and body types. While it's not as supportive as the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic, it offers enough support for most back and stomach sleepers. Its very soft upper comfort layers provide enough pressure relief for most side sleepers, though if you're in the lighter weight category, you may want a softer mattress for side sleeping. Overall, it offers versatile performance, making it a good option if you're a combination sleeper or looking for a mattress that suits you and your partner.

Otherwise, it offers a solid performance overall. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers, and offers fantastic motion isolation, so you won't feel most movements. It has very sturdy edges, so you can comfortably sit or sleep on the side of the bed. However, it uses a mix of good and lower-quality foam and isn't as durable as the previous pick, so it may start sagging or forming body impressions sooner.

  4. Best Budget Mattress

The Silk & Snow Mattress is the best budget mattress we've tested. This all-foam mattress's memory foam comfort layer helps it offer impressive pressure relief for most people, making it a great option for side sleeping. It offers good body conformity for lighter people, and an even better performance for average-weight and heavier individuals, so regardless of your weight, it'll relieve enough pressure on your arm and shoulder for comfortable side sleeping. The sleeping surface is responsive, so it doesn't have a hugging feel. However, it's not very bouncy, which can make it feel harder to change sleeping positions compared to springier mattresses.

This mattress also stands out for its fantastic motion isolation. You'll feel very little movement, even if your partner moves a lot as they sleep. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers and also a reasonably durable mattress, since it's entirely made of good-quality foam. However, its edge support is just okay. If you need a solid surface for getting in and out of bed or just like to sleep near the side of the mattress, you'll likely want a mattress with sturdier sides.

  5. Best Cheap Mattress

The best cheap mattress we've tested is the Allswell Hybrid. This Medium-Firm hybrid mattress isn't as suitable for side sleeping as the Silk & Snow Mattress, but its solid support performance makes it a good option for a range of back and stomach sleepers. It's most supportive for lighter people, but also offers decent support for heavier and average-weight individuals, so you'll sink quite evenly into it, which helps keep your spine aligned. Its upper comfort layers aren't as soft as the previous pick's, and you won't sink in as far, but they are very contouring, which helps add pressure relief without creating an enveloping feel.

This mattress also offers a good overall performance, especially for the price. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers, has very sturdy edges so you can comfortably sleep near the side of the bed, and offers excellent motion isolation that makes it suitable for sleeping with a partner. That said, it's not as durable as some of the previous picks. There's one layer of good-quality foam included in the mattress, but all of the comfort layers are made of lower-density foam and will be prone to forming permanent indentations sooner.

Notable Mentions

  • Casper Cooling Select:

The Casper Cooling Select is a budget-friendly all-foam mattress that you might prefer to the Silk & Snow Mattress if you're a back or stomach sleeper. It offers better support overall, especially for heavier individuals, and also has a springier feel that makes it feel easier to move around on. However, its cooling and motion dissipation are both significantly worse.

  • Big Fig Mattress:

The Big Fig Mattress is a hybrid model designed for plus-size people. Its medium firmness level makes it suitable for heavier side sleepers. While it's not as cooling as the Casper Snow, it's bouncier and more responsive, which makes changing sleeping positions feel easier. It's also quite durable, thanks to its higher-quality foam.

  • Saatva Latex Hybrid:

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a good alternative to the Casper Snow for lighter back and stomach sleepers. It's not quite as cooling, but it comes close. With a bouncier and more responsive feel, it's much easier to move around on. It's also more durable, so it'll resist sagging for longer.
