The Big Fig Mattress is a high-end hybrid model made specifically for heavier and plus-sized people. It supports up to 550 lbs per sleeper (1,100 lbs total), which is approximately twice as much as most mattresses. Pocket coils make up its support system, while its comfort layers contain polyfoam and latex.

This mattress has a medium firmness, making it well-suited to average and heavier side sleepers as well as lighter to average stomach and back sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may want something plusher, while heavier stomach and back sleepers may want a firmer option. This model is noticeably bouncy and extremely responsive, so you don't feel constrained as you change sleeping positions. It contours your body, but not too closely, and you don't sink very deeply into the mattress, leaving you with a feeling that you're being lightly cradled, but not hugged.

Cooling

The Big Fig Mattress offers decent cooling performance. It tends to collect some heat as you fall asleep and dissipates it slowly throughout the night. If you tend to be cold as you fall asleep or if cooling simply isn't a priority for you, this model will offer satisfactory cooling. On the other hand, if you sleep hot or live in a hot climate, this mattress isn't likely to meet your cooling needs.

Pros
  • Excellent edge support.

  • Uses quality polyfoam that shouldn't form premature indentations.

Cons
  • Not cooling enough for hot sleepers.

8.2
Motion Dissipation

The Big Fig Mattress delivers great motion dissipation. You only feel larger movements, like when your partner rolls over, and even then, you feel them mainly in the lumbar area and just a bit at the head and feet. The motion dissipates quickly, so your partner tossing and turning or a pet hopping onto the bed late at night is less likely to disturb or wake you.

Pros
  • Excellent edge support.

  • Impressive motion isolation means movement is less likely to disturb you.

  • Uses quality polyfoam that shouldn't form premature indentations.

Cons
None
9.6
Responsiveness

The Big Fig Mattress offers superb responsiveness. You don't feel 'stuck in place,' and instead, it's easy to move around and shift sleeping positions. When you compress the mattress, it bounces back almost instantly.

Pros
  • Fantastic responsiveness makes it easy to change sleeping positions.

  • Excellent edge support.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Big Fig Mattress comes in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, and Split King. Big Fig rates the mattress as 'medium-firm' but adds that the top layer makes it feel a bit plusher. They also make the Big Fig Firm Mattress and the Big Fig Luxe Mattress. We tested the Queen-sized Big Fig Classic Mattress. See the label for our unit.

If you encounter another variant or have experience with a variant that performs differently, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

Big Fig stands out as the first company to specifically cater to plus-sized sleepers. The Big Fig Classic Mattress supports up to 550 lbs per sleeper (1,100 lbs total). This is a noticeably bouncy and very responsive mattress. Like the Saatva Classic, it recovers its shape instantly after being compressed. It offers great motion isolation, outperforming some foam options, like the Zinus Original Green Tea 2024.

Unfortunately, its cooling performance is just decent. If you're looking for a plus-sized mattress that's a bit more cooling, you can check out the Helix Plus Luxe. While we haven't tested this mattress and can't speak to its cooling performance, the Helix Midnight Luxe, which has a similar construction, performed better in this regard. Overall, if you don't sleep hot or live in a hot climate, this mattress offers a great overall performance.

    DreamCloud Premier Hybrid

    Track

The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid has a better performance than the Big Fig Mattress. The DreamCloud is much more cooling and also offers a better motion dissipation performance. The Big Fig is more responsive, so it pushes back against your movements faster, making moving around in your sleep very easy. It's a medium mattress, making it better-suited for heavier side sleepers than the DreamCloud, which is a softer mattress better-suited for lighter and average side sleepers.

This medium mattress is well-suited to average-sized and heavier side sleepers, as well as lighter to average-sized stomach and back sleepers. Heavier back and stomach sleepers may want a firmer option, while lighter side sleepers may want something plusher, such as the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid, which is less bouncy but offers a similarly balanced feel, with moderate sinking and contouring.

The Big Fig Mattress has excellent edge support. The sides are reinforced with polyfoam, which doesn't compress easily. This makes getting in and out of bed easier and ensures that you don't feel like you're going to slip off when sleeping near the edge of the bed.

This mattress offers decent cooling performance, but it won't be sufficient if you sleep hot or live in a hot climate. It retains a fair amount of heat as you fall asleep and continues to dissipate heat fairly slowly throughout the night. If you tend to be chilly at night or if heat isn't a concern, this may not be an issue for you, but if you have trouble falling asleep in the heat or often wake up overheated, you may want to consider other options, such as the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid.

This mattress has four layers of foam above its pocket spring support system. The quilted top is made from polyfoam and fiber fill, which helps give the surface of the mattress a cushy feel. Below that is a layer of latex. Latex has a bouncy, resilient feel that provides a good balance of pressure relief and support; however, the layer of latex in this mattress is very thin, so it probably doesn't impact the feel of the mattress much. The lower comfort layer and transition layers are made of polyfoam, which provides more pressure relief and helps contour your body.

All the foam layers in this mattress are dense enough to meet the standard for good or high quality. The polyfoam in the quilted top and lower comfort layer is of good quality, and the polyfoam in the transition layer is dense enough to be considered high quality. The latex in the lower comfort layer is good quality, too. These layers will resist signs of wear, like sagging and permanent impressions, longer than lower-quality foam.

There's 4.1" (10.3 cm) of foam above the pocket spring support system. The quilted top is 1.3" (3.3 cm) thick, which helps provide some cushioning. The latex foam used in the upper comfort layer is very thin, at just 0.4" (0.9 cm), so its impact is likely fairly insignificant. Below that, the polyfoam lower comfort layer is 1.4" (3.6 cm), helping to relieve pressure and support the recessed parts of your body. The lowest layer of foam is the 1" (2.5 cm) polyfoam transition layer, which helps ensure you won't sink through to the pocket springs if you compress the layers above.

A dense layer of pocket springs makes up the support tier of this mattress. Compared with other types of coils, these individually wrapped springs offer better motion isolation and contouring. The 14-gauge springs are medium-soft, though the high density of this layer makes it feel firmer. This layer offers support for the heavier parts of your body, like your shoulders, hips, or lumbar, depending on your sleeping position.

The softest components of this mattress are those closest to the sleeping surface. The polyfoam in the quilted top layer is fairly soft, but the upper comfort foam is much softer. This helps provide pressure relief, keeping you comfortable as you shift positions throughout the night. The lower comfort layer is a bit firmer than the layers above, which provides a balance of pressure relief and support, while the transition layer is the firmest foam overall, providing support and ensuring that you don't sink through to the pocket coils if you compress the layers above.

The springs make up the firmest layer of the mattress, delivering support to the heavier parts of your body that sink through the comfort layers, like the lumbar region for back sleepers, or shoulders and hips for side sleepers. The springs in the lumbar area are a little bit softer, allowing your lumbar region to sink slightly further into the mattress. While 14-gauge springs are medium-soft, the spring layer is very dense, increasing the stiffness of this layer and the mattress. Overall, the softer foam layers and firmer spring layer combine to provide a medium firmness level.

Most of the foam used is quite resilient or bouncy, leading to a responsive feel that makes it easier to shift around or change positions on the mattress. The exception is the latex upper comfort foam, which has significantly less resilience than the other foam layers but still offers a bit of bounciness, a characteristic of latex in general. This mattress's combination of resilient foam layers and pocket springs results in its noticeably bouncy feel overall.

The pocket coils are pretty bouncy and push back when pressure is applied. Combined with the resilient foam layers, this explains the mattress's noticeable bounciness.
