The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is a high-end mattress marketed for cooling and lower back support. Its comfort layer is Purple's proprietary Gel-Flex Grid, and its support layer consists of zoned pocket coils that are firmer in the lumbar area.

Our Verdict

7.2
Side Sleeping

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is best-suited for heavier and average-weight side sleepers. It offers fantastic body conformity for people in the heavier weight category and excellent body conformity for people in the average-weight category, so your shoulder will sink in enough to relieve pressure. However, it's not very supportive for people in those weight categories, so your hips may sink in a little further. It's not a good option for lighter side sleepers, who won't sink in enough for proper pressure relief.

Pros
  • Excellent body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier people.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for lighter people.

6.8
Back Sleeping

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is best-suited for lighter back sleepers. This 'Medium' mattress offers great support for people in that weight category, so it'll keep your hips from sinking in further than the rest of your body. While it doesn't have the best pressure relief performance for lighter people, its contouring upper comfort layer helps cushion your hips and lower back. It offers mediocre support for heavier people and disappointing support for average-weight people, making it less suitable for back sleeping.

Pros
  • Great support for lighter people.

  • Highly contouring comfort layer helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Disappointing support for average-weight people.

  • Mediocre support for heavier people.

6.7
Stomach Sleeping

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is best-suited for lighter stomach sleepers. It's impressively supportive for people in that weight category, so your hips won't sink in very far, which is important for spinal alignment. Its grid comfort layer is highly contouring, which helps relieve pressure for areas like your knees and hips. However, it's not well-suited for stomach sleepers in the average- or heavier-weight categories, as it's not supportive enough, which can cause your back to arch when you're sleeping on your stomach.

Pros
  • Great support for lighter people.

  • Highly contouring comfort layer helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Disappointing support for average-weight people.

  • Mediocre support for heavier people.

7.4
Longevity

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is decently durable. There's only one layer of foam in the mattress, and it's made of good-quality polyfoam that should resist showing signs of wear for longer compared to lower-density, lower-quality foams.

Pros
  • Uses good-quality, more durable polyfoam.

Cons
None
7.2
Pressure Relief

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid's pressure relief performance varies depending on your weight. It feels much firmer for lighter people, who won't sink into the mattress past the grid comfort layer and won't get enough pressure relief for comfortable side sleeping. However, it offers excellent body conformity for average-weight people and fantastic body conformity for heavier people, so it offers much better pressure relief for people in those weight categories. Regardless of your weight, lighter parts of your body won't sink into its upper comfort layer very much, but the grid is very contouring, which helps with pressure relief.

Pros
  • Excellent body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Fantastic body conformity for heavier people.

  • Highly contouring comfort layer helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for lighter people.

6.6
Support

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid offers very different levels of support depending on your weight. It's most supportive for lighter people, so you can sleep on your back or stomach, and your hips will stay in line with the rest of your body. However, it's not nearly as supportive for average-weight or heavier people, whose hips will sink further into the mattress, making it not ideal for back or stomach sleepers in those weight categories.

Pros
  • Great support for lighter people.

Cons
  • Disappointing support for average-weight people.

  • Mediocre support for heavier people.

10
Cooling

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is exceptionally cooling. It feels cool when you first get into bed and does an outstanding job of moving heat away from you overnight. It's a great option if you're a hot sleeper whose main priority is cooling.

Pros
  • Extremely cooling, even for hot sleepers.

Cons
None
8.3
Motion Dissipation

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid has a great motion dissipation performance. You'll feel some movements near the source, so when your partner rolls over, you'll feel it in the lumbar area. However, you won't feel it all over the mattress, and it dissipates quickly, so motion is unlikely to wake you.

Pros
  • Motion stays localized and dissipates quickly.

Cons
  • You'll feel bigger movements near the source.

9.3
Responsiveness

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid has fantastic responsiveness. The grid comfort layer springs back into shape quickly when you move, and the mattress's spring layer helps give it a bouncy feel. Overall, it feels easy to move around on, and you don't feel stuck in place.

Pros
  • Highly responsive, so you don't feel stuck in place.

  • Bouncy feel makes it easy to move around in your sleep.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid has a 'Medium' feel that makes it suitable for average-weight and heavier side sleepers as well as lighter back/stomach sleepers. It stands out for its incredible cooling performance, which is good enough to keep even the hottest sleepers feeling refreshed. It also offers great edge support and excellent motion dissipation, outperforming the lower-end all-foam Purple Mattress in both respects. However, some 'Medium' mattresses offer better support for average-weight and heavier people. While its performance is okay for side sleeping, if you're concerned about keeping your hips from sinking, you might prefer a 'Medium' mattress with better support, like the Casper Snow or the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

To see what we recommend, check out the best mattresses, the best mattresses for side sleeping, and the best cooling mattresses.

    Purple Mattress

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is better for most people than the Purple Mattress. The RestorePlus offers more pressure relief, making it more suitable for average-weight side sleepers. It also offers sturdier edges and better motion dissipation. It's more cooling, although both models are extremely cooling.

    Saatva Classic

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is better than the Saatva Classic for most people. Both are 'Medium' mattresses, but the Purple is more supportive, especially for lighter people, making it a better option for back/stomach sleepers in that weight category. Its fantastic cooling performance makes it a better option for hot sleepers, and it also offers better motion dissipation, so your partner's movements are less likely to wake you up.

    Saatva Rx

The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid offers a better performance than the Saatva Rx. The Purple is significantly more cooling, making it more suitable for hot sleepers. It offers better edge support and motion dissipation and uses denser, better-quality foam.

    Casper Snow

The Casper Snow and the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid have different strengths. While both have a 'Medium' feel, the Casper offers better pressure relief and is a much better option for lighter side sleepers. Its more supportive feel also makes it suitable for a wider range of back/stomach sleepers, but its sluggish feel may make you feel stuck in place. The Purple is more responsive and feels less enveloping, so it's easier to move around on. While both mattresses are cooling enough for hot sleepers, the Purple dissipates much more heat overnight, so it's a better choice if cooling is a priority.

This 'Medium' mattress is a good option for average-weight and heavier side sleepers as well as lighter back and stomach sleepers. It's not supportive enough for average-weight and heavier back/stomach sleepers, while it'll create uncomfortable pressure for lighter side sleepers.

Like the all-foam Purple Mattress, its construction, particularly its Gel-Flex Grid, affects how it feels depending on your weight. The grid's squares collapse easily, but lighter people won't apply enough pressure for it to buckle, resulting in great support for people in that weight category. People in the average- and heavier-weight categories who cause it to buckle and sink into the polyfoam layer below will perceive it as much softer and much less supportive. Some mattresses with a similar 'Medium' feel, like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and the Casper Snow, offer significantly better support for people in the average- and heavier-weight categories.

This 'Medium' mattress offers fantastic body conformity for heavier people and excellent body conformity for people in the average-weight category. If you're a side sleeper, your shoulder will sink in enough for comfortable side sleeping. However, its body conformity for lighter people is poor, and it'll create uncomfortable pressure for lighter side sleepers.

This mattress is most supportive for lighter people, as it helps keep your spine aligned if you sleep on your back or stomach. However, it only offers mediocre support for heavier people and disappointing support for average-weight people. It's not a good option for back or stomach sleepers in those weight categories. While it's normal for a mattress to be less supportive for heavier people than for lighter people, it's not always such a significant difference. The Purple's grid becomes quite stiff once you lie on it, and it collapses. Lighter people won't cause it to buckle, so it helps add support, but average-weight and heavier people will sink into the polyfoam layer below.

This mattress has a great motion isolation performance, so you won't feel every little movement your partner makes. You'll feel larger movements near the source, so when your partner rolls over, you'll feel it in the lumbar area. However, it does a fantastic job of keeping motion localized, so you won't feel it all over the mattress. Motion also dissipates quickly, making it less likely to wake you.

It has great edge support. The sides of the mattress are reinforced with polyfoam and coils, and while you'll sink into the bed a bit when you sit on the edge, it doesn't form much of a ramp outward, so you won't feel like you're about to slide off.

This mattress has outstanding cooling. It feels cool when you first get into bed and dissipates an exceptional amount of heat over an eight-hour night, performing even better than the all-foam Purple Mattress, which is itself exceptionally cooling. The unique grid-shaped comfort layer allows heat to dissipate more quickly than solid foam, making it a good option for hot sleepers, especially if heat often disturbs your sleep.

The results for the Purple RestorePlus are off the charts, as you can see above. We've also created a graph with a modified Y-axis, so you can see its performance over the entire eight hours.

The transition layer is made of good-quality polyfoam, which will resist sagging for longer than less dense, lower-quality foams. The polymer grid is very dense, but density isn't a good indicator of durability for elastomeric polymers. Other factors, like chemical composition, cross-linking, and fillers used, are more important in determining how long it'll last.

The GelFlex Grid makes up the upper comfort layer. It's 7.1 cm (2.8") thick, and it collapses easily when you lie on it, which adds contouring and helps with pressure relief. This layer is thicker than the Purple Mattress's grid layer, which helps explain the RestorePlus's better body conformity for most people. The transition layer has medium firmness. Not everyone will interact with it, as lighter people won't cause the grid layer to buckle and sink into the polyfoam layer. However, if you do, it allows you to sink in a little more and prevents you from feeling the individual springs below.

The GelFlex Grid has medium firmness, but doesn't behave like foam. The grid's squares easily collapse when you lie on it, and it becomes much stiffer once collapsed. The transition layer of polyfoam has medium firmness and allows average-weight and heavier people to sink in a little more than the GelFlex Grid's 7.1 cm (2.8") thickness.

The spring layer is zoned, and there's a significant difference in firmness between the lumbar and head/foot areas. The coils are very firm in the lumbar area, which helps add more support for heavier parts of your body like your hips. They're much softer at the head/foot of the mattress, with a medium feel.

The polyfoam transition layer has low resilience, so it has very little bounce and doesn't have a lot of 'push back.' While the shape of the elastic polymer grid doesn't allow us to test its resilience the way we do with foams, it has a springy feel. This helps give the mattress its very responsive overall feel.
