A mattress-in-a-box, or bed-in-a-box, is a mattress that has been compressed, vacuum-sealed, and rolled before shipping. This allows mattresses to be sent by regular mail rather than scheduled delivery. The earliest models were budget-friendly all-foam models, but nowadays, you can get almost any kind of mattress delivered in a box: mattresses with all-foam and hybrid designs are widely available at a range of price points, from cheap to high-end.
Just like with a mattress you'd try out in the store, you should look for the right level of pressure relief and support for your body type and sleeping position, while also considering other aspects that are important to you, like cooling or edge support. If you're considering an all-foam bed-in-a-box, it's worth noting that all-foam mattresses sometimes lack bounce, which makes moving around and changing sleeping positions feel more difficult. That said, while you usually can't try out a bed-in-a-box before it arrives on your doorstep, most companies offer a long return window.
We've tested more than 55 mattresses, and these are our recommendations for the best bed-in-a-box mattresses. If you want to see more recommendations, check out the best mattresses for side sleepers. For size-specific recommendations, see the best full-size and best twin mattresses.
We've tested over 55 mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

Best Mattress-In-A-Box
Firmness LevelMedium (47 Pa/mm)Side Sleeping8.3Back Sleeping8.5Stomach Sleeping8.6Cooling8.9Motion Dissipation8.5See all our test resultsLongevity5.3The best mattress-in-a-box that we've tested is the Casper Snow. This high-end, hybrid mattress's versatile performance makes it a great option for combination sleepers and couples with different needs. Its memory foam comfort layers give it an enveloping, slow-moving feel, while a zoned foam layer and very stiff springs add support. Most people will sink into it quite a lot, but evenly, so your hips will stay in line with the rest of your body. As a result, it offers enough pressure relief for side sleepers as well as the extra support back and stomach sleepers need for spinal alignment. The company offers a 100-night trial period and a 10-year limited warranty, which is quite standard for bed-in-a-box mattresses.
It offers excellent motion dissipation, so movement doesn't travel across the mattress and dissipates quickly, reducing the likelihood of waking you. It's also amazingly cooling, so it can keep hot sleepers comfortable. However, its edge support is mediocre, so it's not a good option if you need sturdy sides for getting in and out of bed. It's also not the most durable mattress, since the comfort layers are made of lower-quality foam and may show signs of wear sooner than those in mattresses made with better-quality materials.

Best Upper Mid-Range Mattress-In-A-Box
Firmness LevelFirm (81 Pa/mm)Side Sleeping6.4Back Sleeping7.6Stomach Sleeping8.0Cooling8.1Motion Dissipation7.5See all our test resultsLongevity8.9The Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic is a great bed-in-a-box option for back and stomach sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. This all-foam mattress's latex comfort and support layers make it springy and responsive. You'll hardly sink into it at all, and unlike the Casper Snow, it's not enveloping or hugging. Its firm feel and low body conformity make it unsuitable for most side sleepers, since it'll put a lot of pressure on your arm and shoulder. However, it's impressively supportive for most people, so it's a great option for back and stomach sleepers, who need more support for proper spinal alignment. Like the previous pick, it includes a 100-day sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty.
While its motion dissipation isn't as strong as the previous pick's, making it a less appealing option if you sleep lightly, it's cooling enough for hot sleepers and has very sturdy edges, so you can sleep comfortably near the edge of the bed. This bed-in-a-box only includes dense, high-quality latex foam, making it a durable option that should resist sagging and maintain its support performance for longer. However, it's worth noting that it's also very heavy. At 125lbs for a queen-size model, it's much heavier than the 81-lb Casper Snow, and while shipping is free in most of the U.S., as with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, set-up is not included, and you may need help moving it onto your bed frame.

Best Mid-Range Mattress-In-A-Box
Firmness LevelMedium (46 Pa/mm)Side Sleeping7.9Back Sleeping7.7Stomach Sleeping7.6Cooling8.4Motion Dissipation9.0See all our test resultsLongevity6.3The Tuft and Needle Mint is a more versatile bed-in-a-box at a mid-range price point. This Medium all-foam mattress has very soft upper comfort layers that you'll easily sink into, and unlike the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic, offers enough pressure relief for a range of side sleepers. It's not as supportive overall but still offers enough support for lighter and heavier back and stomach sleepers. This balance makes it a better option for combination sleepers and couples with different sleeping styles. Like the previous picks, you can return it for a refund within a 100-day trial period, and it includes a 10-year limited warranty.
The mattress has responsive feel, so you don't feel tightly hugged by the sleeping surface. However, it's not bouncy, which makes changing sleeping positions feel more difficult versus springier models. It has incredible motion isolation, so you won't feel your partner's every move, and it's cooling enough for hot sleepers. However, it's not as durable as the previous pick. The support and upper comfort layers are good quality, but a few layers of lower-density foam may cause sagging or permanent indentations sooner, which may eventually affect its feel and support performance.

Best Budget Mattress-In-A-Box
Firmness LevelMedium-Plush (39 Pa/mm)Side Sleeping8.1Back Sleeping7.3Stomach Sleeping7.1Cooling8.1Motion Dissipation9.4See all our test resultsLongevity6.7The Silk & Snow Mattress is worth considering if you're looking for a budget-friendly bed-in-a-box for side sleeping. This all-foam mattress has a Medium-Plush firmness level and while it's not as supportive as the Tuft and Needle Mint, it offers better pressure relief and body conformity, especially for lighter and average-weight people. This makes it a more comfortable option for side sleeper, especially in the average and heavier weight categories. The mattress is exceptionally responsive, so you won't feel tightly hugged, but it's not very bouncy, so it's not as easy to move around on. The company offers a longer 365-day trial period, so you have longer to make a decision compared to many bed-in-a-box mattresses, and a 15-year limited warranty.
This mattress offers even better motion isolation than the Tuft and Needle, so you'll only feel the largest of your partner's movements. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers, transferring heat efficiently from the beginning to the end of the night. The good-quality foam layers make it a reasonably durable option, so it should resist sagging and maintain its support and pressure relief performance for longer. However, its edge support is just alright, so you can't sleep too close to the sides without feeling like you might slip off.

Best Cheap Mattress-In-A-Box
Firmness LevelMedium-Firm (54 Pa/mm)Side Sleeping6.7Back Sleeping7.3Stomach Sleeping7.5Cooling8.3Motion Dissipation8.8See all our test resultsLongevity6.0Consider the Allswell Hybrid if you want an inexpensive bed-in-a-box, especially if you're in the heavier weight category or a back and stomach sleeper. This Medium-Firm mattress offers a good balance of pressure relief and support for average-weight and heavier back, stomach, and side sleepers. While you won't sink into it much overall, a memory foam layer gives it a contouring, slightly hugging feel that adds some cushioning Lighter individuals will want something plusher, like the Silk & Snow Mattress, for side sleeping, but its good support makes it a good option for lighter back and stomach sleepers. This mattress is mainly available at Walmart (U.S.), and includes a 90-day free return period and 10-year limited warranty.
It's even more cooling than the previous pick, so you might prefer it if you're a hot sleeper and its firmer feel works for you. Its excellent motion dissipation means you won't feel most of your partner's movements. It also offers excellent edge support, so it's a good option if you need a solid surface for getting in and out of bed. That said, it's not the most durable. There's one layer of good-quality foam, but its upper layers of lower-density foam will be prone to forming body impressions sooner.

Casper Cooling Select:
The Casper Cooling Select is an all-foam mattress available at Costco (U.S.) that offers more support for heavier individuals than the Allswell Hybrid. While it's not as cooling and has worse motion dissipation, it's a good, cheap option for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category.
