The Boring Mattress is a mid-range bed-in-a-box mattress. It has a pocket coil support layer, a memory foam transition layer, and a polyfoam comfort layer. This mattress was replaced by a newer model, the Boring Hybrid. While similar, the newer model has an updated design.

This medium mattress is a good choice for light to average back and stomach sleepers, as well as average to heavier side sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may need something plusher, as they may not sink far enough in, creating pressure points at the hips and shoulders. Conversely, heavier back and stomach sleepers may want a firmer option as they'll likely sink too far into the mattress to maintain spinal alignment. This mattress offers a balanced feel. With moderate bounciness, average contouring, and a medium degree of sinkage, you feel gently cradled and hugged, but not too tightly.

8.2
Cooling

The Boring Mattress is great at keeping you cool. It transfers a lot of heat away from you overnight, keeping you cool even if you tend to sleep hot or wake up overheated. That said, it transfers heat more slowly during the first hour of the night. If you often have a hard time falling asleep because of the heat, this could become an issue.

Pros
  • Very good at keeping you cool throughout the night.

  • Excellent edge support extends the comfortable sleeping area.

  • Contains only good and high-quality foam, which resists sagging and indentations.

  • Ideal for light to average back and stomach sleepers and average to heavier side sleepers.

Cons
  • Not ideal for lighter side sleepers or heavier back and stomach sleepers.

8.5
Motion Dissipation

The Boring Mattress offers excellent motion isolation and dissipation. You only feel larger movements, and even then, they don't travel throughout the mattress, and the motion dissipates very quickly. If you sleep with a partner or have a pet who jumps on and off the bed at night, you'll feel their bigger shifts nearby, but they're not likely to wake you up.

Pros
  • Excellent edge support extends the comfortable sleeping area.

  • Excellent motion dissipation means that movement is less likely to wake you.

  • Contains only good and high-quality foam, which resists sagging and indentations.

  • Ideal for light to average back and stomach sleepers and average to heavier side sleepers.

Cons
  • Not ideal for lighter side sleepers or heavier back and stomach sleepers.

8.9
Responsiveness

The Boring Mattress is exceptionally responsive. It's easy to change sleeping positions and move around on the surface of the mattress, since it adapts to your movements almost instantly.

Pros
  • Excellent edge support extends the comfortable sleeping area.

  • Fantastic responsiveness makes it easy to shift sleeping positions.

  • Contains only good and high-quality foam, which resists sagging and indentations.

  • Ideal for light to average back and stomach sleepers and average to heavier side sleepers.

Cons
  • Not ideal for lighter side sleepers or heavier back and stomach sleepers.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Boring Mattress Co. mattress is a medium hybrid model, available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes. We tested the Queen-size model, and our results are only valid for that variant. See the label for our unit.

This mattress was replaced by a newer model, the Boring Hybrid. Although it's similar, the newer model has a modified design. The manufacturer also produces an all-foam model, the Boring AF (All-Foam) Mattress. If you come across another variant or have experience with a variant that performs differently, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Boring Mattress is an excellent mid-range bed-in-a-box mattress from the Boring Mattress Company. This mattress stands out for the materials it uses. Many hybrid options, even higher-end ones like the Beautyrest Harmony Lux, use some amount of low-quality foam that can prematurely develop indentations and begin to sag. However, this mattress only uses good or high-quality foam that lasts longer. Its performance also competes with the best hybrid mattresses we've tested, offering a solid all-around sleeping experience. It's particularly good at motion isolation, which some hybrids struggle with because of their bouncy spring layer. This mattress combines less bouncy springs and a memory foam layer, which helps it absorb motion. It has fantastic responsiveness as well, and while it can't compete with latex options like the Saatva Latex Hybrid, since latex is such a responsive material, it's likely responsive enough for most users. Overall, it's an excellent choice that works especially well for side sleepers and measures up to much pricier picks.

    Casper Snow

    Track

The Boring Mattress is a better option than the Casper Snow for most people. The Boring is a more responsive mattress, with better edge support. This mattress makes it easy to move around or shift sleeping positions, and you can sleep right near the edge without feeling like you could slide off, unlike with the Casper. That said, the Casper keeps you cooler, especially at the beginning of the night. If cooling is your top priority, you may prefer the Casper, but otherwise, the Boring is a better bet.

    Beautyrest Harmony Lux

    Track

The Boring Mattress and the Beautyrest Harmony Lux seem well matched, but the Boring has an advantage that makes it the better choice for most users. That advantage is in the density of the foam, which correlates to quality and durability. The Beautyrest uses low-quality foam throughout the mattress, making premature indentations and sagging very likely. Conversely, the Boring uses good and high-quality foam, which extends the life of the mattress overall. So, if durability is a consideration, the Boring is the better choice. If you're not concerned about longevity, either mattress should suit you. The Boring has a slight advantage in cooling and motion dissipation, while the Beautyrest has better edge support, but there's not a huge difference in any of these areas.

    Purple Mattress

    Track

The Boring Mattress and Purple Mattress are well-matched overall, but each has its own strengths. The Boring has the edge when it comes to motion isolation, especially edge support. You feel less movement on the Boring, so it's a good choice if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns. Its excellent edge support also benefits partnered sleeping, since you can comfortably sleep near the edge, extending the usable sleeping area. The Purple, on the other hand, outperforms the Boring when it comes to cooling and responsiveness. It keeps you cool as you fall asleep and throughout the night, and it's very easy to shift sleeping positions. These characteristics aren't common for a foam mattress, since they tend to trap heat and absorb motion, so the Purple is an especially good choice if you're looking for a foam mattress with these qualities.

    DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid

    Track

The Boring Mattress is a better choice than the DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid. The biggest jump in quality is found in edge support. When you sleep near the edge of the DreamCloud, you feel like you could slip off, while the Boring provides much more support in this area. Beyond this aspect, the medium Boring outperforms the medium-plush DreamCloud in every area, though by a smaller margin. It also uses good-quality foam, while the DreamCloud uses mostly low-quality foam, which you can expect to sag and form indents sooner.

This medium mattress is best suited to average-sized and heavier side sleepers as well as average-sized and lighter back and stomach sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may want something softer that allows their hips and shoulders to sink further in, while heavier back and stomach sleepers may want something firmer to keep the spine aligned.

The Boring Mattress is moderately bouncy. It's not as bouncy as a typical innerspring or latex mattress, but compared to other hybrids, especially those that contain memory foam, it's quite bouncy and avoids the static sensation of a foam mattress.

You sink fairly deeply into the Boring Mattress, and it contours your body pretty closely, too, leading to a feeling of being cradled and hugged, but not completely enveloped. Since the memory foam layer is below a layer of polyfoam, not everyone will interact with it to the same degree. Heavier people will feel more of this layer, resulting in increased contouring.

This is a superbly responsive mattress. It recovers its shape almost instantly after you compress it, adapting to your movements, so it's easy to move around and change sleeping positions.

This mattress is excellent at isolating motion, so you don't feel every little shift. You still notice larger movements, for example, you feel movement in the lumbar area when your sleeping partner rolls over, but they don't travel throughout the mattress. Motion also dissipates very quickly, so it's less likely to wake you up.

The Boring Mattress provides excellent edge support. You can sit or lie near the edge without worrying about slipping off, thanks to the additional polyfoam built into the sides. This extra support makes it easier to get in or out of bed, too.

This mattress is great at keeping you cool throughout the night, making it a strong choice for hot sleepers who often wake up overheated. That said, it transfers heat more slowly for the first hour after you lie down, which may be an issue if you have trouble falling asleep in a warm environment.

This mattress has two layers of foam above its pocket spring support system. The upper comfort layer is made of Energex Responsive Foam, a type of polyfoam marketed for its combination of pressure relief and responsiveness. The transition layer below is memory foam. This configuration leads to a responsive surface that retains some of memory foam's common benefits, like pressure relief and motion isolation, while avoiding some of the related pitfalls, like low responsiveness and the 'lifeless' feeling often associated with memory foam.

This mattress uses dense, good-quality foam. The polyfoam upper comfort layer is dense enough to be considered high-quality, while the memory foam layer below reaches the standard for good-quality foam. These dense layers of foam will resist sagging and body impressions for longer than less dense, lower-quality foams.

This mattress has 3 inches (7.5 cm) of foam above its layer of pocket coils. The polyfoam upper comfort layer is 2 inches (5 cm) thick and provides a responsive surface that makes it easy to shift sleeping positions. Most people will fully compress this upper layer and feel the 1-inch (2.5 cm) memory foam transition layer to some extent, too. The transition layer adds additional contouring and pressure relief while ensuring you don't feel the individual springs below.

Pocket springs make up the support layer of this mattress. This design uses individually-wrapped coils, so each spring can move independently from the adjacent coils, allowing for increased contouring and better motion isolation compared to other types of springs. The 14-gauge springs have a medium firmness, and the layer has an average density. Combined with the softer upper layers, they give the mattress a medium firmness overall.

The support layer of this mattress is made up of pocket springs. They offer moderate support at the head and foot of the mattress and a little extra resistance at the lumbar to offer extra support to the heaviest parts of the body—the hips or lumbar, depending on your sleeping position. Together with the softer comfort layers, the pocket springs produce a medium mattress.

Neither of the mattress's foam layers is very resilient, or bouncy. The memory foam transition layer has very low resilience, which is expected of this soft, slow-moving material. It helps to relieve pressure and provide a smooth transition to the support layer beneath. The polyfoam comfort layer is more resilient, adding a bit of bounciness to the mattress overall, though it's still not as resilient as typical polyfoam.
