Notice: This mattresses was replaced by Helix Midnight Luxe 2025

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2024 is a high-end hybrid bed-in-a-box mattress. Its support layer is made of individually wrapped pocket coils, the comfort layer is memory foam, and the top is quilted. The cover is made of TENCEL, a material made of wood pulp often marketed as a sustainable fabric.

It's a medium-plush mattress, making it best suited to side sleepers and a good choice for lighter back and stomach sleepers. Average-sized and heavier back and stomach sleepers may want something firmer. This hybrid mattress provides moderate contouring thanks to its memory foam comfort layer, but you don't sink very deeply into it. It's not very bouncy but still avoids the static feeling of many all-foam mattresses.

Our Verdict

8.3
Sleeping (In Development)

The Helix Midnight Luxe provides a great sleeping experience. This mattress has a good cooling performance, keeping even hot sleepers fairly comfortable and maintaining a neutral temperature. It has excellent edge support, making it comfortable to sleep near the edge and easy to get in and out of bed. This mattress also provides impressive motion dissipation. If you sleep with a partner or have a pet who hops on or off the bed at night, their movements aren't likely to wake you. You only feel their larger shifts, and only for a moment. It's easy to shift sleeping positions, thanks to the mattress's fantastic responsiveness, you never feel 'stuck in place.'

Pros
  • Fantastic responsiveness makes it easy to shift sleeping positions.

  • Excellent edge support.

  • Great motion dissipation means movement is less likely to wake you up.

  • Good cooling performance.

  • High-quality polyfoam in the transition layer helps resist deeper indentations.

  • Well-suited to side sleepers and lighter back and stomach sleepers.

Cons
  • Low-quality foam in the upper layers can cause indentations and sagging.

  • Not ideal for average and heavier back and stomach sleepers.

7.7
Cooling

The Helix Midnight Luxe delivers good cooling performance. It keeps you pretty cool as you fall asleep and continues to disperse enough heat throughout the night to keep even hot sleepers from overheating. That said, it doesn't feel noticeably cool, but instead maintains a fairly neutral temperature. If you don't tend to overheat while sleeping, this option should suit you well. It can also work for hot sleepers, but if cooling is your top priority, you may want to consider another option.

Pros
  • Good cooling performance.

Cons
None
8.1
Motion Dissipation

The Helix Midnight Luxe offers impressive motion dissipation. The movement of your sleeping partner isn't likely to disturb you, as you only feel larger shifts, and they dissipate quickly.

Pros
  • Great motion dissipation means movement is less likely to wake you up.

Cons
None
8.9
Edge Support

The Helix Midnight Luxe has excellent edge support. Firm pocket coils line the sides of the mattress, so instead of feeling like you might slip off when you sleep near the edge, you're gently guided back towards the center. This makes it more comfortable to sit on the side of the bed and easier to get in and out.

Pros
  • Excellent edge support.

Cons
None
8.9
Responsiveness

The Helix Midnight Luxe provides excellent responsiveness. It quickly adapts to your movements when you shift sleeping positions and doesn't make you feel constrained or stuck.

Pros
  • Fantastic responsiveness makes it easy to shift sleeping positions.

Cons
None
6.9
Longevity

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a reasonably durable mattress. The transition layer is made of dense, high-quality polyfoam, which will resist losing its shape or forming indents. Unfortunately, the opposite is true of the mattress's upper layers. Both the polyfoam layer in the quilted top and the memory foam in the comfort layer are less dense and lower-quality. They'll begin to sag and develop permanent impressions faster than higher-quality foams, impacting the durability of the mattress overall.

Pros
  • High-quality polyfoam in the transition layer helps resist deeper indentations.

Cons
  • Low-quality foam in the upper layers can cause indentations and sagging.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress comes in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Short Queen (60" x 74"), and RV King (72" x 80"), and the manufacturer lists its firmness level as 'Medium.' There are also a few upgrades available. You can add a GlacioTex Cooling cover, CoolForce Layer, or ErgoAlign Layer depending on your preference. We tested the Queen-sized model with no additional upgrades. See the first label and the second label for our unit.

If you come across another variant or have experience with a variant that performs differently, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a high-end hybrid model. Helix sorts its mattresses into three categories, in ascending price order: the Helix Core Collection, Helix Luxe Collection, and Helix Elite Collection. Each category has a range of options in various designs and firmness levels, with some featuring plus-sized mattresses, 'natural' options, and even a flippable mattress for kids. Compared to other hybrid models, the Midnight Luxe offers a solid, well-rounded performance. Although there are options with better cooling, like the Casper Snow, the Helix dissipates enough heat to keep hot sleepers pretty comfortable. It's also very responsive, so it avoids the sluggish feeling of more memory-foam-forward mattresses like the Zinus Original Green Tea, though it doesn't respond instantly like the Saatva Classic. Like the Beautyrest Harmony Lux, this mattress has excellent edge support and great motion isolation, which together make it a particularly good choice if you sleep with a partner.

If you'd like more to think about, see our picks for the best mattresses overall.

    Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2024 and the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid are both medium-plush mattresses and have similar levels of bounce, sinking, and contouring. They perform similarly, but the Helix is more responsive, making it easier to change sleeping positions. It uses zoned coils, so it's a bit firmer in the lumbar area.

    Helix Midnight 2024

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2024 and the Helix Midnight 2024 are very evenly matched, and for most people, the additional cost of the Luxe version won't be worth it. The Midnight Luxe is a medium-plush model with improved motion dissipation, making it a good option for couples. It's more responsive as well, so while it isolates motion, it still supports your movements. On the other hand, the Midnight, a slightly firmer medium model, has sturdier edges, so you can sleep right next to the sides without worrying about slipping off. It's more cooling, too, and while it's not quite cooling enough for hot sleepers, it's efficient enough to keep most people cool. Overall, unless motion dissipation is particularly important to you, the Helix Midnight is likely the better value.

    Bear Elite Hybrid

For most people, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a better option than the Helix Midnight Luxe 2024. It's a more responsive option with better edge support, so it's easier and more comfortable to move around, sleep near the edges, and get in and out of bed. The Bear is slightly more cooling as well, though the difference is very small. That said, the Helix is better at isolating motion, so if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns, you may still prefer it.

Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance

We've recently started testing mattresses. We use objective data and repeatable testing for key characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, to ensure each mattress gets the same treatment. Since we buy all of our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials. Our approach gives us unprecedented insight into how each product design decision contributes to a mattress's overall performance and feel, and allows us to tailor our results to different body types and sleeping positions.

    0.6 s

It has excellent responsiveness. While it doesn't recover its shape instantly like some mattresses, it adapts to your movements very quickly, so you don't feel restricted. This mattress is significantly more responsive than the Helix Midnight 2024, likely thanks to the resilient polyfoam in its quilted top. Both mattresses use memory foam for their upper comfort layers, which can make it more difficult to move around. While the Midnight 2024 doesn't have anything above this layer, the polyfoam in the Luxe's quilted top helps to offset the sluggishness of the memory foam and make the mattress more responsive overall.

The Helix Midnight Luxe offers great motion isolation. You only feel larger movements, like when your partner rolls over or gets in or out of bed. You feel the movement mainly in the lumbar region and less so around your head and feet. The motion dissipates quickly, making it less likely to disturb you.

This mattress has excellent edge support. The sides are reinforced with pocket coils, which don't compress much when you sit or lie on the edge of the bed. Instead, they very slightly coax you back towards the center. This ensures you don't feel like you're going to slide off when you sit on or sleep near the edges and makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

This mattress offers good cooling performance. It moves heat away from you pretty effectively as you fall asleep, then continues to dissipate a moderate amount of heat throughout the night. If cooling isn't your biggest priority, this mattress should suit your needs. Even if you sleep hot, it's likely to keep you fairly comfortable. But if you find yourself overheating, live in a very hot climate, or are looking for something with more effective cooling, you may want to consider another model, like the DreamCloud Premier Rest Hybrid.

The mattress has three foam layers above its pocket spring support system. The quilted top is a combination of polyfoam and fiber fill, giving the surface of the mattress a bit of cushioning and responsiveness. Below that, the upper comfort layer is memory foam, which offers low responsiveness and high contouring, helping to relieve pressure. The lowest layer of foam is the polyfoam transition layer, which adds support and responsiveness.

This mattress uses a mix of low-quality and high-quality foam. Neither the polyfoam used in the quilted top nor the memory foam used in the upper comfort layer is dense enough to be considered good quality. This impacts the mattress's durability, causing indentations to form prematurely. The polyfoam used in the transition layer, however, is dense enough to meet the standard for high quality.

This mattress has 5" (12.7 cm) of foam and fiber fill above its pocket spring support system. The quilted top is 1.8" (4.5 cm); it helps provide a bit of cushioning and ensures that you don't experience too much of the slow-moving, sluggish feeling of the 1.6" (4.1 cm) memory foam layer below. That said, the memory foam layer still helps to relieve pressure and contour your body. The polyfoam transition layer is 1.6" (4.1 cm) thick and ensures you don't sink through to the pocket spring support layer.

The support layer is made of individually encased pocket springs, which offer better motion isolation and contouring than other types of coils. Moreover, the springs in this mattress are zoned, with different firmness levels for the head/feet (right) and lumbar (left). There are medium-soft 14-gauge springs at the head and feet, and slightly firmer 13-gauge springs in the lumbar region. However, the somewhat low density of this layer makes the springs feel a bit softer overall. This configuration provides extra support to the hips or lumbar, depending on your sleeping position.

The quilted top layer is quite soft, though the upper comfort foam is even softer. This allows a good amount of pressure relief while ensuring you don't sink too far into the mattress. The transition layer of polyfoam has a medium firmness, which ensures that you don't feel the spring layer below if you fully compress the comfort layers.

The springs are firmer than the layers above, so they help support the parts of your body that sink more deeply into the mattress, like the hips and shoulders for side sleepers, the lumbar region for back sleepers, and the abdomen for stomach sleepers. They're quite a bit firmer in the lumbar region than at the head and feet, offering extra support in this area. Overall, the softer comfort layers combined with the firmer pocket springs result in a medium-plush mattress.
