The Leesa Original is a budget all-foam mattress with a Medium firmness level. Its comfort layer is made of responsive memory foam, which has a high density like regular memory foam, but because of gel beads infused into the foam, it doesn't have the same slow-moving feel. It also includes a regular memory foam transition layer and a firmer polyfoam layer. The foam in the mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US for being free from certain harmful chemicals, and the materials in the mattress also meet the 'GREENGUARD Gold' standard for low VOC emissions.

  • 7.9
    Average Weight
  • 8.4
    Heavy Weight

The Leesa Original mattress is best-suited for heavier and average-weight side sleepers. It offers excellent body conformity for heavier individuals. Your arm and shoulder will sink significantly into the sleeping surface, relieving pressure when side sleeping. Its impressive body conformity for average-weight people makes it a good option for side sleepers in that category as well. However, its body conformity for lighter people isn't good. Its soft comfort layer allows you to sink in enough for passable pressure relief, but you'll probably want a softer mattress if you always sleep on your side.

Pros
  • Great body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Excellent body conformity for heavier people.

Cons
  • Mediocre body conformity for lighter people.

Back Sleeping
  • 7.1

  • 7.3
    Average Weight
  • 7.6
    Heavy Weight

The Leesa Original mattress is best-suited for back sleepers in the heavier weight category. You'll sink significantly into its comfort layers, which helps relieve pressure on your hips and shoulders, but it also offers good support, meaning your hips won't sink significantly further than the rest of your body. It's also a decent option for average-weight back sleepers, although it's not quite as supportive. Its weaker support for lighter people makes it a less appealing option for back sleepers in that weight category. You might want a more supportive mattress for proper spinal alignment.

Pros
  • Good support for heavier people.

  • Decent support for average-weight people.

Cons
  • Support for lighter people is just okay.

7.2
Stomach Sleeping
  • 6.9
    Light Weight
  • 7.1
    Average Weight
  • 7.6
    Heavy Weight

The Leesa Original mattress is best-suited for heavier stomach sleepers. It offers good support for people in that weight category, helping them sink evenly into it so your hips stay aligned with the rest of your body and your back won't arch when you sleep on your stomach. It offers decent support for average-weight people as well, so it's a satisfactory option for people in that weight category, but it's not ideal, especially if you always sleep on your stomach. Similarly, it's fairly supportive for lighter people, and isn't bad for occasional stomach sleep, but a more supportive option would be better.

Pros
  • Good support for heavier people.

Cons
  • Average-weight people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

  • Support for lighter people is just okay.

6.0
Longevity

The Leesa Original mattress is a moderately durable mattress. The polyfoam support layer is dense enough to be considered high-quality, helping the mattress resist sagging. However, the memory foam used for the upper comfort and transition layers is less dense and lower-quality, making the mattress more prone to body impressions than denser foam mattresses.

Pros
  • Good-quality support layer.

Cons
  • Transition and comfort layers may show signs of wear sooner.

7.7
Pressure Relief

The Leesa Original mattress offers good pressure relief overall. It performs best for average-weight and heavier people, since it'll allow you to sink in enough to relieve pressure on your arm and shoulder when side sleeping. Its body conformity performance isn't bad for lighter individuals, but you'll sink in less, and it's not quite good enough for comfortable side sleeping. The comfort layers are soft enough for significant sinking but don't mold around you very closely, so you don't get added pressure relief from contouring.

Pros
  • Great body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Excellent body conformity for heavier people.

  • High sinking helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Mediocre body conformity for lighter people.

  • Not very contouring.

7.2
Support

The Leesa Original mattress is decently supportive overall, although its performance depends on your weight. The firm support layer helps it offer good support for heavier people, making it suitable for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category. However, lighter and average-weight people won't sink into it as evenly, resulting in worse spinal alignment, so it's not a great option for average-weight or lighter back and stomach sleepers.

Pros
  • Good support for heavier people.

  • Decent support for average-weight people.

Cons
  • Average-weight people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

  • Support for lighter people is just okay.

8.3
Cooling

The Leesa Original mattress has great cooling. It doesn't feel warm when you first get into bed and doesn't warm up as the night goes on. Overall, it's cooling enough for most people, including hot sleepers.

Pros
  • Cooling enough for hot sleepers.

Cons
8.2
Motion Dissipation

The Leesa Original mattress offers impressive motion dissipation. While you'll feel most movements near the source, they aren't felt all over the mattress, so when your partner rolls over, you'll feel it in the middle of the mattress but not around your head. Motion also dissipates very quickly, so you'll feel the initial jolt but not like you're bouncing around whenever someone moves. This makes motion less likely to wake you.

Pros
  • Movements are only felt near the source.

  • Motion dissipates very quickly.

Cons
  • You'll feel most movements.

7.5
Responsiveness

The Leesa Original mattress has a responsive feel. The sleeping surface recovers its shape quickly after being compressed, so you won't feel hugged or stuck in place. This all-foam mattress isn't very bouncy, however, which makes it feel more difficult to change sleeping positions.

Pros
  • Sleeping surface responds quickly.

Cons
  • Lack of bounce makes moving around feel more difficult.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Leesa Original is a Medium all-foam mattress. It only comes in one firmness level, but you can get it with a fabric cover or with a quilted top 'upgrade'. The quilted top is marketed as a more cooling option that also adds more cushioning, and may affect the feel and performance of the mattress. We bought and tested a Queen-size unit with the fabric cover. Here's a picture of our unit's label.

If you have either variant of the Leesa Original, we invite you to share your experience in the comments!

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Leesa Original mattress is an all-foam mattress with a gel-infused memory foam layer that gives it a more responsive feel than some all-memory foam mattresses like the Nectar Classic. This Medium mattress offers good support for heavier individuals, making it well-suited for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category, especially if you don't want a very firm mattress like the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic. However, unlike similar mattresses like the Tuft and Needle Mint, it's not as supportive for average-weight or lighter individuals. This makes it less versatile, since it's less suitable for average-weight back/stomach sleepers and not great for lighter people overall.

If it works for your body and sleeping position, it performs well otherwise, with impressive cooling and great motion dissipation, although if even the smallest movements disturb you, you might prefer a mattress with even better motion isolation, such as the Silk & Snow Mattress.

For more options, check out the best memory foam mattresses, the best mattresses for side sleepers, and the best mattresses for heavy people.

    Tuft and Needle Mint

    Track

The Tuft and Needle Mint is a more versatile mattress than the Leesa Original. Both mattresses are well-suited for heavier back, stomach, and side sleepers, but the Tuft and Needle is a better mattress for lighter people overall, offering better support for back and stomach sleeping and better pressure relief for side sleeping. It also offers better motion dissipation, and it's bouncier, which makes it feel easier to move around on.

    Silk & Snow Mattress

    Track

The Silk & Snow Mattress and Leesa Original have different strengths. The Silk & Snow offers a better performance for lighter individuals, whether you sleep on your back, stomach, or side. The Leesa's better support for heavier people, meanwhile, makes it better for people in that weight category, regardless of sleeping position. The Silk & Snow has better motion dissipation, which is worth considering if you sleep with a partner, especially if you sleep lightly.

    Nolah Evolution

    Track

The Leesa Original is better than the Nolah Evolution in most cases. The Leesa's good support for heavier people makes it suitable for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category. It also offers enough pressure relief for average-weight and heavier side sleepers. The Nolah isn't as supportive, so it's not a good option for back and stomach sleeping, although it offers similar pressure relief for average-weight and heavier side sleepers. It's also much less cooling and a bit less durable.

    Novaform Serafina Pearl

    Track

The Novaform Serafina Pearl is more versatile than the Leesa Original. It offers decent support regardless of your weight and has a satisfactory performance for a range of back and stomach sleepers. It's also a little better for lighter side sleepers. The Leesa isn't as supportive for lighter people, but its good support for heavier people makes it a better option for back and stomach sleepers in that category. It's also a better option for hot sleepers.

The Leesa Original is a Medium mattress and a good option for heavier individuals, as it offers good support for back/stomach sleeping and excellent body conformity for pressure relief when side sleeping. It's also a great option for average-weight side sleepers.

However, it's not as supportive for average-weight and lighter individuals, so it's less well-suited for back/stomach sleepers in those weight categories. It also doesn't offer enough pressure relief for lighter side sleepers.

This mattress is most conforming for average-weight and heavier individuals. Whether you are an average or heavier-weight individual, your arms and shoulders sink in enough for proper pressure relief when side sleeping. However, like many Medium mattresses, it's not as conforming for lighter people. While it offers a passable performance for people in that weight category, if you mostly sleep on your side, you'll want a more conforming mattress.

This mattress is most supportive for heavier people. It offers a good performance for people in that weight category, making it a good option for back and stomach sleepers who don't like the feel of firmer mattresses. You'll sink into its soft comfort layers quite significantly, but its firmer support layer prevents your hips from sinking in overly far. This helps keep your spine aligned, which is important for comfortable back and stomach sleep and can help prevent back pain caused by your mattress.

It only offers decent support for average-weight people and okay support for lighter people, who will also sink into the comfort layers, but engage less with the firmer support layer. This makes it a satisfactory option for back/stomach sleep, especially if you sometimes sleep on your side and want good pressure relief, but it won't keep your spine as aligned as some mattresses.

    4.0 cm (1.6")

This mattress isn't bouncy. Compared to springier models, changing sleeping positions requires more effort, since you won't feel the mattress push back against your movements.

You'll sink quite far into the mattress overall, but the sleeping surface isn't very contouring. This makes it a decently enveloping mattress, because you'll feel like you're sleeping 'in' the mattress instead of just 'on' it. However, it doesn't mold around you very closely, so you won't feel tightly hugged, and it feels less enveloping overall than some more highly contouring mattresses.

This mattress has great motion isolation overall. It only does an okay job of preventing you from feeling movements, so you'll feel even smaller movements like your cat jumping onto the foot of the bed or your partner shifting slightly. However, it's fantastic at keeping movement localized, so you'll only feel movement near its source. Motion also dissipates incredibly quickly, so the mattress never bounces or wobbles after someone moves.

The Leesa Original has sub-par edge support. There's no additional component like firmer foam along the edges, and you'll sink in quite a bit when you sit on the side of the bed. The edges also form a steep ramp outward under pressure, so if you sleep near the side of the bed, you may feel at risk of sliding off the mattress.

This mattress offers great cooling and will help keep hot sleepers cool throughout the night. It doesn't feel warm during the first hour you're in bed, and continues to dissipate heat very efficiently overnight, so you won't feel like it's gradually heating up as you sleep.

This mattress's edges aren't reinforced with anything, such as firmer foam or springs. Some firm all-foam mattresses with a similar design still provide good edge support, but in this case, it results in sub-par edge support.

The upper comfort layer is made of responsive memory foam. Like traditional memory foam, this foam has a higher density than most polyfoam you'll find in mattresses, but gel beads added to the foam give it a more responsive feel. Gel-infused memory foam is also marketed as offering better cooling than regular memory foam. The transition layer is made of regular memory foam and is less responsive, although since it's under a more responsive layer, it doesn't make the mattress feel slow-moving overall. The support layer is made of polyfoam, which is typical of all-foam mattresses and is firmer and bouncier.

It's a moderately durable mattress. The responsive gel-infused memory foam and memory foam layers don't meet the density standard for good-quality memory foam and will be prone to showing signs of wear, like body impressions, sooner than higher-quality foams. This can affect the mattress feel, making it feel like the mattress is sagging rather than supporting you. The polyfoam support layer is of good quality, which will help the mattress maintain its overall support for longer, especially if you sink into the upper layers enough to engage with it.

The responsive memory foam upper comfort layer and regular memory foam transition layer both have a medium-soft firmness level, which allows higher sinking and helps with pressure relief. The support layer is much firmer, which helps prevent the heavier parts of your body from sinking in overly far, especially for individuals who sink further into the upper layers. It also makes it firmer overall than similar mattresses with softer support layers, like the Medium-Plush Silk & Snow Mattress.

The upper comfort layer of responsive memory foam is somewhat resilient, or bouncy. It's not extremely slow-moving, but it doesn't feel springy or give a strong 'push back'. The transition layer, made of typical non-gel memory foam, is much less resilient than you'd expect from memory foam, which is usually less bouncy and springy. The polyfoam support layer is much more resilient, contributing to the mattress's slight bounce.
