The Beautyrest Black is a high-end hybrid mattress. This mattress features pocket coils as its support layer, a thick quilted top, and memory foam and latex comfort layers. This model is a higher-end option in the lineup and is marketed for its motion isolation and responsiveness.

It has 'Medium' firmness, making it best suited for average and heavier side sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may want something plusher, and it may not offer enough support for bigger back and stomach sleepers. This mattress is moderately bouncy, with a contouring but not enveloping feel. It's very responsive, so you don't feel stuck in place or tightly hugged.

Our Verdict

8.0
Sleeping (In Development)

The Beautyrest Black provides a great sleeping experience. The mattress's excellent edge support makes getting in and out of bed easier and ensures you can sprawl across the whole surface without feeling at risk of slipping off. It's very responsive, so you don't feel stuck in place. This mattress also offers good motion dissipation, so you won't feel every little movement a sleeping partner makes. However, its cooling performance is only decent. If heat rarely bothers you, that may not be a problem, but it's likely to make hot sleepers feel overheated.

Pros
  • Very responsive.

  • Very good motion isolation.

  • Great edge support.

  • Great for average and heavier side sleepers.

  • Uses mostly good-quality foam.

Cons
  • Not cooling enough for hot sleepers.

  • Lighter side sleepers may want a plusher mattress.

7.4
Cooling

The Beautyrest Black has satisfactory cooling performance. This hybrid mattress has several layers of foam above its springs, which may make hot sleepers feel overheated. If you often feel overly hot or live in a warmer climate, it's not a great option. That said, if cooling isn't a priority, its performance is good enough that it won't create a problem.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Not cooling enough for hot sleepers.

7.7
Motion Dissipation

The Beautyrest Black has very good motion dissipation. It does a good job of isolating movement, so you won't feel every move your partner makes. That said, you'll feel bigger movements across the mattress. Motion doesn't dissipate as quickly as some mattresses, so you might also feel the mattress jiggling or bouncing slightly after bigger movements, like when your partner rolls over.

Pros
  • Very good motion isolation.

Cons
None
8.5
Edge Support

The Beautyrest Black has excellent edge support. The edges are reinforced with firm polyfoam and don't compress much when you sit or sleep on the side of the mattress. When you're sitting on the edge, it compresses and forms a slight ramp outward, but still, you don't feel like you're about to slide off if you end up sleeping on the very edge of the mattress.

Pros
  • Great edge support.

Cons
None
8.9
Responsiveness

The Beautyrest Black has fantastic responsiveness. The mattress regains its shape very quickly after being compressed, so you can roll over without feeling restricted or stuck in place. While its upper comfort layer is memory foam, which has lower responsiveness, it's below a very responsive quilted layer. The result is that the mattress doesn't have a slow-moving memory foam feel.

Pros
  • Very responsive.

Cons
None
6.8
Longevity

The Beautyrest Black is reasonably durable. Its construction uses a mix of low-quality, good-quality, and high-quality foam, but most of the layers reach the standard for good quality. Both the memory foam upper comfort layer and polyfoam transition layer are dense enough to be considered good quality, while the latex lower comfort layer meets the standard for high quality. The quilted top contains two low-quality layers of polyfoam. These can be expected to sag and form indents faster than the rest of the mattress.

Pros
  • Uses mostly good-quality foam.

Cons
None

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Beautyrest Black model name is used for a lineup of mattresses with different designs. There are four 'Series,' with Series One being the lowest-end and Series Four the highest. Each mattress is available in Firm, Extra Firm Pillow Top, Medium, Medium Pillow Top, Plush, and Plush Pillow Top.

There's also the 'Beautyrest Black Hybrid' mattress. The Beautyrest Black and Beautyrest Black Hybrid models are both considered hybrid mattresses, featuring similar designs. The 'Hybrid' models don't have a quilted top, which Beautyrest says creates a more enveloping mattress that you sink into more.

We tested a Queen-sized 'Medium' Series Three Beautyrest Black mattress, and other variants will perform differently. Here's a picture of our unit's label. If you have the Beautyrest Black Series Three or another variant, we invite you to share your experience in the comments below!

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Beautyrest Black is a high-end hybrid mattress. It uses polyfoam, memory foam, and latex in its comfort layers, and has a bouncy, responsive feel. You feel lightly cradled but not hugged. If you want a mattress with a more contouring, hugging feel, you might prefer the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt, which has a more typical memory-foam feel, with lower responsiveness. The Beautyrest Black isn't ideal for hot sleepers, since it retains a lot of heat overnight. The Beautyrest Harmony Lux has a similar feel and better cooling, although you sink a little deeper into it.

    Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid and the Beautyrest Black have different strengths. The Sealy performs better for cooling, motion isolation, and edge support. The Beautyrest Black is a more responsive mattress, which makes it easier to move around in your sleep, and it uses mostly good-quality foam, which is more durable. The Beautyrest has a medium firmness, so it's better suited for average and heavier side sleepers, while lighter side sleepers might prefer the plusher feel of the Sealy.

    Helix Midnight Luxe 2025

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2025 is better than the Beautyrest Black for most people. They both have a medium firmness, a responsive feel, and moderate sinking and contouring. However, the Helix offers significantly better cooling, so it's much more suitable for hot sleepers. It has better motion isolation, so your partner's movements are less likely to wake you. It also offers better edge support, so it's more comfortabale to sleep near the side of the mattress.

    Saatva Rx

The Beautyrest Black is a little better than the Saatva Rx. Both mattresses have a medium firmness level and are suitable for most side sleepers. They're moderately bouncy and very responsive, so it's easy to change sleeping positions. The Beautyrest has significantly better edge support, making it more comfortable to sit and sleep on the side of the mattress. It also offers better motion isolation. That said, the Saatva has better cooling. You sink deeper into it, so you might prefer it if you like feeling slightly enveloped by your mattress.

    Beautyrest Mattress

The Beautyrest Mattress has a better performance than the Beautyrest Black. The Beautyrest Mattress offers significantly better cooling, motion dissipation, and edge support. That said, the higher-end Black mattress is more durable since it uses a greater proportion of good-quality foam. You might also prefer its more contouring feel.

Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance

We've recently started testing mattresses. We use objective data and repeatable testing for key characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, to ensure each mattress gets the same treatment. Since we buy all of our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials. Our approach gives us unprecedented insight into how each product design decision contributes to a mattress's overall performance and feel, and allows us to tailor our results to different body types and sleeping positions.

It does a good job of isolating movement, so you won't feel all movement. However, you will feel bigger movements across the mattress. Motion dissipates somewhat slowly, so it can feel like the mattress bounces around a bit after bigger movements, like when your partner rolls over. Some hybrid mattresses offer better motion isolation, like the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate and DreamCloud Premier Hybrid.

It has decent cooling overall. It's likely to make you feel warm during the first hour of sleep, so it's not a good option if you often feel overheated while falling asleep. It does a better job over the whole night, so you won't continue to feel warmer and warmer all night. It's not a bad option if you rarely feel overheated, but hot sleepers will want a mattress with better cooling, such as the Helix Midnight Luxe 2025 or Puffy Royal.

This mattress has about six inches of foam above its spring layer. The quilted layer is made of fiber fill and polyfoam and is soft, so you'll sink into it a bit. The upper comfort layer below is made of memory foam, which generally has slow responsiveness and high contouring. It contributes to the mattress's moderate contouring, but since it's below the quilted layer, it doesn't create a slow-moving memory foam feel. The lower comfort layer is made of latex, which is firmer and bouncier, so you won't sink into it as much, and it helps provide support for the rest of your body. The polyfoam transition layer below prevents you from feeling the coils if you compress the upper layers.

Most of the foam is of good quality, including the memory foam upper comfort layer and polyfoam transition layer. The latex layer is even more dense, meeting the standard for high-quality foam. These layers will resist sagging and indentations longer compared with lower-quality foams.

Unfortunately, the foam used for the quilted top isn't dense enough to be considered good quality. There are two different kinds of polyfoam used in that layer. These foams (one is blue, and one is white) feel different and have slightly different densities. Since most of the foam in the layer is the blue type, we've included the result for that foam here under 'Quilted Top Fill.' The white foam has a slightly lower density of 23.5 kg/m3. These foams in the quilted layer are lower-quality and may sag or develop permanent indentation sooner.

The soft quilted layer is 3" thick, which helps give the mattress its moderate sinking. The memory foam layer below contributes to a sinking and contouring, but since it's below 3" of foam and fiber fill and only measures 0.5", it doesn't create a slow-moving memory foam feel. The latex below is thicker and quite dense; if you fully compress it, there's a final polyfoam layer that prevents you from feeling the spring layer.

The springs are 12-gauge pocket coils, which correspond to a very firm spring. The spring layer isn't particularly dense, which makes the layer feel softer, so overall, it's firm but not extremely so.

The coils are 'Triple-Stranded,' meaning each coil is made of three wires wrapped around each other. Beautyrest markets 'Triple-Stranded Pocket Coils' as offering better durability and support.

Most of the foam is quite resilient and bouncy, except for the upper comfort layer. This contributes to the mattress's moderately bouncy feel and makes it easier to move around on. The quilted top fill has a medium amount of resilience or bounce. The upper layer of the mattress doesn't feel like it's pushing back on you, especially because of the memory foam layer just below, which has very low resilience. If you compress the upper layers, you'll feel the latex lower comfort layer, which is very resilient or bouncy. The polyfoam above the springs is also quite resilient, contributing to the mattress's overall bounciness.

The springs have a lot of bounce, so they push back when compressed. This helps make the mattress more bouncy overall compared with other hybrid mattresses like the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate, so moving around in your sleep is fairly effortless.
