The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a fairly versatile multipurpose inkjet printer. It performs quite well overall, making it a viable option for a wide range of needs. Whether you're printing in black and white or in color, its cost-per-print is quite low. It also prints very quickly, especially for an inkjet printer, and it has lots of different connectivity options to choose from. It also has a flatbed scanner for photos and ID cards, as well as a sheetfed scanner with an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to help you scan multiple pages. However, it doesn't support duplex scanning. Its standard black cartridge also has a pretty bad page yield. Fortunately, there are high-yield cartridges available that should last longer if you print a lot in black and white.

Our Verdict

8.0 Family

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a very good family printer. Its black and color printing costs are affordable and it has great scanning features. It does a decent job at printing photos, but they look a bit dull compared to what you'd get from a photo lab. On the upside, this printer has lots of mobile connectivity solutions so the whole family can print or scan from lots of different devices, including USB flash drives.

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Fast printing speeds.
  • Can print directly from a USB flash drive.
  • Poor black page yield.
  • Photo printing quality is only decent.
6.9 Small/Home Office

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is alright for a home or small office. It doesn't cost very much to print in black or color, and it prints very quickly. The standard black cartridge's page yield is poor, though, so you may need to change it fairly often. Thankfully, there's a higher-yield black cartridge available, which should last longer. The sheetfed scanner has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to help process multiple pages in a row quickly, but unfortunately, it can't scan both sides of a two-sided document. On the upside, the printer has great connectivity options, including Ethernet for a reliable connection to your router.

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Fast printing speeds.
  • Ethernet support.
  • No duplex scanning.
  • Poor black page yield.
8.2 Student

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a great student printer. Printing in black and white is quite affordable, and it doesn't cost very much to add a splash of color to your reports or presentations, either. It also prints very quickly, which makes all the difference when you're down to the wire at the end of a long project. On the downside, it doesn't support Bluetooth, which is disappointing if you have a friend over and they need to quickly print something. Fortunately, they can print from a USB flash drive, or even from their phone with NFC.

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Fast printing speeds.
  • Lots of connectivity options, including NFC support.
  • Can print directly from a USB flash drive.
  • Poor black page yield.
  • No Bluetooth support.
7.5 Black & White

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a good black and white printer. While its black page yield is quite bad, the cartridges aren't very expensive, so the cost-per-print stays affordable. There's also a higher-yield version available which should last longer and provide better value if you print a lot. The printer is otherwise quite versatile, with great connectivity options and scanning features. However, you can't scan two-sided documents automatically.

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Fast printing speeds.
  • Poor black page yield.
7.7 Casual Photo

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a good casual photo printer. Photos are quite inexpensive to print, and they don't take too long, either. The photo printing quality is decent, but they do look a bit dull and flat. However, it should be alright for casual use. This printer can print most popular photo formats on glossy paper; however, the input tray can only hold one format of paper at a time. On the upside, when printing on plain paper, the color accuracy is very good.

  • Great cost-per-print.
  • Can print directly from a USB flash drive.
  • Good color accuracy on plain paper documents.
  • Photo printing quality is only decent.
  • Can't print 2" x 3".

Build & Design Quality

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a very well-designed printer. The plastic used in its build feels good and the printer overall seems quite durable. The paper input tray feels sturdy and the output tray is quite solid. It's also easy to access paper jams with the removable rear cover. However, you need to raise the entire scanner bed to get to the ink cartridges, and the printer needs to be turned on to access them. If you need a printer that can handle large printing jobs, check out the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3730, a printer that includes two separate input trays that support 250 pages each.

Height 9.7" (24.7 cm)
Width 16.7" (42.4 cm)
Depth 14.8" (37.6 cm)
19.4 lbs (8.8 kg)

The Epson WF-3720 is fairly compact for an all-in-one multipurpose printer. It's a bit tall, so if you place it directly below a shelf you may have a hard time accessing the flatbed scanner, but it should otherwise fit in most spots. If you want a more compact printer, check out the Epson WorkForce WF-2860.

Touchscreen Yes

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 has a good display screen. It uses a fairly large touchscreen that's easy to navigate. The background display is crisp and you can also tilt the display panel for better visibility whether you're seated or standing. There's a bit of lag when accessing the home menu, but it's not too bothersome overall.

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 has an ordinary inkjet cartridge system. There are three different color cartridges, so you only need to change the ones that run out the most often. The color page yield is very good as well. However, the black page yield is quite bad, considering it's only a few pages more than the color yield. On the upside, there's a high-capacity version of the black cartridge available for purchase, which should last longer.

This printer accepts third-party cartridges, but this could void its warranty, and special attention must be paid as this printer uses pigment-based inks.

The Epson WF-3720 has great scanning features. The flatbed scanner has a good maximum scan resolution and color depth for enlarging photos. There's also a sheetfed scanner with an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for scanning multiple pages at a time. However, if you're scanning a two-sided document you'll need to scan each side separately since there's no duplex scanning. If you'd like a printer that can scan double-sided documents, check out the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830.

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 has a great cost-per-print. Although the color cartridges are a bit pricey when you buy them all together, their added cost-per-print is actually quite low. Printing in black and white is also pretty affordable since the black cartridge isn't too expensive.

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720's printing speed is impressive. It's much quicker than most inkjet printers and gets the first page out faster than a color laser printer. Even photos print fairly quickly.

Color Accuracy
Average Color dE

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 has good color accuracy. You can add a splash of color to a presentation or a report without having to worry about how the colors look.

Photo Printing Quality
Borderless Printing

The Epson WF-3720 has a decent photo printing quality. The detail is good, but the colors have a flat tone. The photo is a little grainy, and there's some color present in the grayscale.

These results are based on the actual physical photo, not the scanned image provided for reference above, which may not be representative of the printer's photo print quality.

The Epson WF-3720 can print on the most common paper formats. However, the input tray can only hold one format of paper at a time, which gets annoying if you often switch between printing documents and photos. The WF-3730 variant has two separate input trays which can help with this. We didn't test it, but it should otherwise perform similarly to the model we reviewed.

The Epson WF-3720 has outstanding connectivity options. You can set up this printer on your home's Wi-Fi network by connecting to your router wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable. If you're not in range of a router, you can also connect straight to the printer via Wi-Fi Direct. While it doesn't support Bluetooth, mobile printing is still easy with AirPrint and Mopria Print. There's even NFC for on-the-go printing with compatible devices. You can also print directly off a USB flash drive.

Update 12/03/2020: We've changed our testing methodology. We now consider that the mobile app is capable of printing .txt files, it just needs to convert them into PDFs first. The score has been updated accordingly.

The Epson iPrint app is superb. It lets you print, scan, and copy directly from your phone. You can also check your printer's ink levels, perform maintenance tasks like firmware updates or printhead cleaning, and order new cartridges.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

There's a variant of the Epson WorkForce WF-3720 called the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3730. The biggest difference is the number of trays: the WF-3720 has only one input tray while the WF-3730 has two.

Compared To Other Printers

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is a versatile inkjet printer. It uses a cartridge system, so it doesn't have as high of a page yield as the Epson EcoTank ET-3760, which uses a supertank system. It also has good color accuracy, but its photo printing quality isn't anything special, and there are better printers for that, such as the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015. Also see our recommendations for the best printers for college students, the best office printers, and the best inkjet printers

Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830 is better than the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720. The WF-4830 feels better built, it can perform duplex scanning, photos come out at a higher quality, and it also has two paper trays instead of just one. On the other hand, the WF-3720 takes less time to print single pages, and it has a higher page yield for color documents.

Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3820

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 and the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3820 are both very good printers from Epson's WorkForce series, with similar performance and no significant feature differences. The 3820's black page yield and black-only cost-per-print are somewhat better. On the other hand, the 3720 has a slightly better color page yield and better-detailed photos, but it warms up much faster to print out the first page.

Brother MFC-J497DW

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is an overall better all-in-one color inkjet printer than the Brother MFC-J497DW. The Epson's page yields and cost-per-print are better. It also prints faster, and it produces photos with better quality and more accurate colors. It also has an Ethernet port and can print directly from USB flash drives. Both printers have flatbed and ADF scanners, faxing capabilities, and similar produced photo quality.

Brother MFC-J995DW

For most uses, the Brother MFC-J995DW is much better than the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720. The Brother has a significantly better cartridge system that yields a lot more pages, which leads to a lower cost-per-print. It also prints better quality photos. However, the Epson prints black-only documents much faster, it has better color accuracy, and it has more connectivity options than the Brother.

Brother HL-L2390DW

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 and the Brother HL-L2390DW are very different printers. The Epson is a color inkjet printer while the Brother is a monochrome laser printer. The Brother is a better choice for printing black and white documents, as it can print faster and it's more cost-effective. However, for color or photo printing, the Epson is the better option. Also, the Epson has more connectivity options and its scanner has an automatic document feeder.

HP OfficeJet Pro 7740

The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is much better than the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 for most uses. The HP can yield a lot more black and color pages, so the ink cartridges won't have to be replaced as often, making it more cost-effective over time. The Epson is faster at printing black and white documents while the HP is faster for color documents and photos. The HP prints better photos and its scanner can perform duplex scanning.

Canon PIXMA G6020

Overall, the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is slightly better than the Canon PIXMA G6020. The Epson has a significantly better display screen, its scanner has an automatic document feeder, and it prints a lot faster. On the other hand, the Canon has a refillable ink tank system that can yield many more pages, making its cost-per-print significantly lower. The Canon's color accuracy isn't as good as the Epson's; however, it prints higher quality photos.

Epson WorkForce WF-2860

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720 is much better than the Epson WorkForce WF-2860. The WF-3720 has a lower cost-per-print because it has a higher page yield, but the Epson 202 C/M/Y cartridges are cheaper for the WF-2860. The WF-3720 also has better color accuracy, external storage device support, and it prints documents faster. However, the WF-2860 is a smaller printer, so it takes up less space.
