Sony A95L OLED
Sony BRAVIA 8 II OLED
The Sony A95L OLED and the Sony BRAVIA 8 II OLED are very similar overall, but the A95L is a bit better. The A95L is brighter in SDR, has better accuracy in SDR, and has less banding in color gradients. On the other hand, the BRAVIA 8 II has a slight edge with HDR brightness and color volume. With most content, you won't notice a difference between them, so go with whatever model is more affordable.

Very interesting! Rtings is extremely useful as an objective comparison tool, but I think this shows some pitfalls of reducing the comparison to a few numbers.
The brightness comparison seems to be more about default settings than capabilities of the panel. The consensus seems to be that the Bravia 8ii is generally capable of 25% more brightness than the A95L. But for whatever reason Sony decided to keep the settings rather dim in SDR Professional mode, maybe for maximum accuracy. The panel is capable of much more. Vivid doesn’t look natural for regular watching, but maybe Standard or Cinema should be evaluated, at least for SDR. Also, brightness can be boosted by tweaking other parameters.
Another thought: As TVs become brighter and brighter, it may be relevant to compare how efficiently this brightness is produced. I.e. rather than comparing the maximum attainable brightness, one could look at the brightness that is produced at 100 W, etc. The same thing that happened with CPUs - just an idea.
We don’t know for sure, but we triple checked our test results since we were surprised by them. We have an out-of-spec policy that Sony can take advantage of if they’re concerned about our results, but that hasn’t happened.
Why don’t your results match up with Sony’s claims of 25% brighter than A95L?
I get that manufacturers exaggerate claims all the time, but it seems odd to claim the Bravia 8 ii has 25% higher peak brightness if it is actually dimmer.
Was their claim complete BS or could there have been an error in testing?
OK- the SDR and HDR brightness compared to the A95L is abysmal. And the color improvement is negligible. Taking the 55 inch for example, Sony wants us to pay $3499 for a TV that’s worse than a 2 year old A95L for $2K. That’s not a Sony tax, that’s an IQ test. Shame on you Sony!
