The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is a decent color laser printer designed for small offices. This large and heavy model has amazing build quality. Its cartridge system is outstanding and yields a high number of both black and color pages, resulting in fewer replacements of the toner cartridges and a lower cost-per-print. The printing speed is also remarkable, even if the first page takes a little longer to print out. Unfortunately, it’s a printing-only device that doesn’t have a scanner, and the connection options are fairly poor as it lacks wireless connectivity. On the bright side, it has good color accuracy, and its two input trays hold up to 650 pages, saving you from constantly having to load more paper during bigger print jobs.

Our Verdict

5.8 Family

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is inadequate for use as a family printer. It’s large and heavy, and it lacks some useful features like a scanner, a user-friendly mobile app, and wireless connectivity. Also, even though it can print photos fairly quickly, the printing quality is disappointing as there’s quite a bit of banding, and the colors aren’t well-defined. On the plus side, it prints remarkably fast and yields a high number of both black and color pages, resulting in a low cost-per-print. However, the toner cartridges are quite expensive.

Pros
  • Good access to paper jam and toner cartridges.
  • Low cost-per-print.
  • Good color accuracy.
Cons
  • Large and heavy printer.
  • No scanner.
  • Disappointing photo printing quality.
  • Very complex mobile app.
7.2 Small/Home Office

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is a decent small office printer. Its cartridge system is outstanding and yields a high number of both black and color documents, leading to fewer toner cartridge replacements and a lower cost-per-print. The printer is rather large and heavy, but its build quality is amazing, and its large input tray capacity is great for bigger print jobs. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a scanner, and its connectivity options are rather limited, but at least it has an Ethernet port so you can connect it to your network.

Pros
  • Amazing build quality.
  • High black and color page yield.
  • Remarkable printing speed for both black and color pages.
Cons
  • Display screen is only okay.
  • No scanner.
  • Doesn’t connect wirelessly unless you buy an adapter separately.
6.5 Student

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is an okay printer for students. It yields a high number of pages for both black and color documents, and its printing speed is remarkable. However, the toner cartridges are quite expensive, though you shouldn’t have to replace them frequently. The printer also lacks certain features like a scanner and wireless connectivity, on top of being large and heavy.

Pros
  • Good access to paper jam and toner cartridges.
  • Low cost-per-print.
  • Remarkable printing speed for both black and color pages.
Cons
  • Large and heavy printer.
  • No scanner.
  • Doesn’t connect wirelessly unless you buy an adapter separately.
  • Very complex mobile app.
8.9 Black & White

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is an excellent black and white printer. It has a fantastic cartridge system that yields a very high number of black pages, resulting in a low cost-per-print. Its printing speed is also remarkable, allowing you to print a 30-page document in less than a minute, even though the first page takes a little bit more time to come out. The build quality is amazing, and its two input trays can hold up a large amount of paper.

Pros
  • High black and color page yield.
  • Low cost-per-print.
  • Remarkable printing speed for both black and color pages.
  • Large input tray capacity.
Cons
  • No scanner.
  • Doesn’t connect wirelessly unless you buy an adapter separately.
6.8 Casual Photo

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is only okay for printing photos. It can print photos fairly quickly and at a decent cost, but unfortunately, the printing quality is disappointing as pictures have quite a bit of banding in them and the colors aren't well-defined. The printer is well-built, with sliders that adjust to different paper sizes, allowing you to print 4’’x 6’’ and 5’’ x 7’’ photos.

Pros
  • Good access to paper jam and toner cartridges.
  • Low cost-per-print.
  • Good color accuracy.
Cons
  • Disappointing photo printing quality.
  • Can’t print 2’’x 3’’ photos.
  • Doesn’t connect wirelessly unless you buy an adapter separately.

Build & Design Quality

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn has amazing build quality. The printer feels sturdy and solid, though the front toner cover is only held by two thin plastic strips. Its design gives you good access to paper jams via the first tray, and it also provides easy access to the toner cartridges. The power cord is removable, making it easy to replace it if damaged. Both trays have weight plates to detect paper and let you know how much is left.

The HP Color LaserJet M554dn's display screen is only okay. It has a small color LCD screen that isn’t touch-sensitive, and a full numerical keypad below it. The screen isn't adjustable, but its vertical angle provides good visibility whether you’re sitting or standing. The menu is also fairly easy to navigate. If you want a similar printer with a much better touch-sensitive display screen, check out the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M555dn.

The HP M554dn is compatible with the HP ePrint Enterprise mobile app, which is available on both Android and iOS devices. The app isn't designed for home use; rather, it's meant for an office environment, and setting it up requires several complex steps and specific information about the network. As such, we consider that there isn’t any mobile app for home use, only for businesses.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn has no variants but is part of the same family of printers as the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn. They both perform very similarly, but the M554dn has a better and bigger display screen, and its color accuracy is also slightly better. You can see our unit’s label here.

Compared To Other Printers

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn is designed for high-volume printing in commercial environments. As such, it features an outstanding cartridge system that yields a high number of pages. It also prints remarkably fast, whether in black or with colors, and has a large input tray capacity, so you don’t have to constantly fill it up with paper during large print jobs. However, it lacks a few useful features when compared to other office printers, such as a scanner and wireless connectivity. It’s also quite large and heavy. For more options, check out our recommendations for the best laser printers, the best printers for small businesses, and the best office printers.

HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw and the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn are both decent color laser printers. The M554dn is better-suited for small offices as it's much bigger and heavier. It yields a lot more pages and prints much faster, while also having a bigger input tray capacity. On the other hand, the M255dw is a better choice for students or anyone looking for a compact size printer. It has a better touch-sensitive screen and you can easily connect to it wirelessly.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw is a better printer than the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn for most uses. The M479fdw has a much better display screen, a remarkable sheetfed scanner, a lot more connectivity options, and decent mobile app support. On the other hand, the M554dn has a higher page yield for both black and color pages and prints much faster. It also has slightly better photo printing quality, though it’s still disappointing.

HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn and the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn perform very similarly. The M553dn yields more pages, whether in black or color, and has a lower cost-per-print. It also prints a little faster. However, the M554dn has a better and bigger display screen, and its color accuracy is also slightly more precise. Both options have disappointing photo printing quality and very few connectivity options.

Brother MFC-L3770CDW Laser

The Brother MFC-L3770CDW Laser is a better printer than the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn except for photo printing. The Brother has a much better touch-sensitive display screen and is equipped with an exceptional scanner. It also has a lot more connectivity options, including wireless printing, and is compatible with an exceptional mobile app. That said, the HP yields a lot more pages in black and color and has a much faster printing speed. It also has much better color accuracy and photo printing quality, though the result might still be disappointing for some users.

Canon imageCLASS MF644Cdw

The Canon imageCLASS MF644Cdw performs better than the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M554dn for most uses, though the M554dn is a better option for photo printing. The Canon has a much better display screen and comes with a great sheetfed scanner. It also has great connectivity options, including wireless ones, and it’s compatible with a remarkable mobile app. On the other hand, the HP has better photo printing quality, though it’s still disappointing. It prints much faster, and its cartridges system yields a lot more pages. However, as the toner cartridges of the Canon are much cheaper, they both end up with a comparable cost-per-print.
