    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

    We bought and tested the Altra Escalante 5 in men's US size 9, as noted on the label for our pair. The pair we purchased is Oceana/White/Black, but you can also buy this shoe in a wide range of colors, depending on the region. The design section applies only to the exact model we tested, but we expect other size variants to perform similarly. For the women's version, the exact results can differ a bit because Altra uses its women-specific "Fit4Her" design, with a slightly narrower profile and female-specific shaping and geometry.

The Escalante 4 is slightly lighter and more flexible, while the Escalante 5 adds more outsole rubber for durability. Both are similarly suited to shorter daily miles, so get whichever one you can find for cheaper.

    Topo Cyclone 3

    The Topo Cyclone 3 and Altra Escalante 5 are both low-stack shoes with roomy forefoot fits and a grounded feel, but the Topo is the better daily trainer overall. Its low-drop platform is easier to adapt to than the Altra's zero-drop geometry, while its lighter build makes it feel more nimble and versatile. Get the Escalante 5 only if you specifically prefer zero drop and a firmer, more direct ride.

    Altra Torin 9

    The Altra Torin 9 and Altra Escalante 5 now deliver a surprisingly similar experience because of their comparable stack heights and weights, even though the Torin and Escalante lines have traditionally filled more distinct roles. The Escalante 5 feels slightly firmer and flatter, giving it more ground contact, while its midsole is also a little livelier. Their daily-training performance is close enough that you should get whichever one costs less.
