The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is a plated max-cushioned trainer designed for long runs and faster training sessions. Its outstanding cushioning and pronounced rocker make it great for longer sessions that include faster paces, providing protection and a smooth roll through each stride. However, its plated construction feels less natural for very relaxed runs, while you're better off with a lighter, more energetic option if you're looking for an efficient, dedicated racing shoe.

Our Verdict
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is great for marathon runners who care more about keeping their legs protected than maximizing speed. Its outstanding cushioning holds up well during prolonged efforts, while its rigid rocker encourages a consistent transition through toe-off. It's not as light as a dedicated racing shoe, and its heel rebound is quite restrained, but it can still work very well over long distances. However, runners who need extra stability may want more support as fatigue builds.
Outstanding cushioning throughout the midsole.
Cushioning remains protective over long efforts.
Stiff rocker maintains a smooth forward roll.
Very good forefoot energy return makes the ride feel dynamic.
Not particularly light for racing.
Soft foam provides limited support underfoot.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is decent for 5K and 10K racing. Its rigid rocker and good bending energy return make for a dynamic toe-off, but the soft forefoot doesn't provide a particularly snappy platform for fast efforts. Its weight also limits its appeal compared with lighter racing shoes, so it won't feel quite as efficient during races.
Stiff rocker maintains a smooth forward roll.
Good energy return as the forefoot snaps back.
Not particularly light for racing.
Soft forefoot and moderate bending stiffness limit snappiness.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is great for long runs. Its outstanding cushioning provides substantial protection, and the forefoot maintains excellent shock absorption over extended efforts. The pronounced rocker also helps guide each transition. However, its tall platform and soft forefoot offer only adequate stability, which is a consideration if you need more support as fatigue builds.
Outstanding cushioning throughout the midsole.
Cushioning remains protective over long efforts.
Stiff rocker maintains a smooth forward roll.
Effective heel rocker smooths transitions.
Soft foam provides limited support underfoot.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is a decent daily trainer, particularly if you value generous protection and a guided transition. You get outstanding cushioning to soften the impact on your legs and a heel rocker that helps you roll forward smoothly, but the plate makes the ride feel less natural at easy paces. Its stability is adequate for most runners who don't need extra support, though it may not be enough if you prefer a very stable and supportive platform.
Outstanding cushioning throughout the midsole.
Effective heel rocker smooths transitions.
Soft foam provides limited support underfoot.
Rigid plate feels less natural at easy paces.

We've bought and tested more than 250 running shoes. Every pair purchased with our own money, never supplied or sponsored by brands. Our data-driven tests are designed to go beyond marketing claims, and since every shoe goes through the exact same methodology, you can directly compare results to find the right pair for your needs.
Test Results
Energy Return
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 has good energy return overall, with a stronger response at the forefoot than at the heel. You'll get more rebound as you push off the front of the shoe, while heel landings feel comparatively muted. The ride offers some energetic feedback, but it isn't exceptionally springy throughout.
Very good forefoot energy return makes the ride feel dynamic.
Relatively muted energy return at the heel.
Forefoot energy return is very good, contributing a livelier response at the front of the shoe than at the heel. It provides a useful rebound as you push off, although it returns a smaller share of the energy than the original ASICS SONICBLAST and falls short of an explosive response.
Heel energy return is adequate and significantly lower than in the original ASICS SONICBLAST. The heel takes in a similar amount of energy in our test, but loses more of it as it compresses and recovers, leaving less to spring back. This can be caused by a different tuning of the midsole or slightly different layering of the two compounds, with more FF BLAST MAX under the heel than in the previous iteration.
Stability
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 provides adequate stability. Its broad base and semi-gusseted tongue help support and secure the foot, but the soft forefoot allows more movement under load. Although the heel is wide, it also places your foot far above the ground, making it less steady than its width alone might suggest.
Wide platform helps support landings.
Gusseted tongue helps secure the foot.
Soft foam provides limited support underfoot.
Tall heel means you're quite high off the ground.
The heel has a relatively soft feel, with a little more initial resistance than the original ASICS SONICBLAST. It becomes firmer as you press deeper into the foam, but remains comparatively forgiving under heavier landings. This gives it some softness underfoot without the solid support of a particularly firm heel.
The forefoot is much softer than on the original ASICS SONICBLAST, giving it a more yielding feel under the ball of your foot. It gains resistance as you push harder, but remains relatively soft under heavier loads. This may feel less secure if you prefer a firm platform beneath the front of your foot.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 uses a three-quarter-length plastic plate to reinforce the midsole and help maintain its rocker shape. The image also shows the two foam layers: FF BLAST MAX sits beneath the plate and is more prominent in the heel and near the toe, while a large section of FF TURBO2 sits above the plate and extends to the bottom of the midsole under the forefoot. This also explains why the forefoot is much livelier than the heel. The plate now has a pronged design to accommodate the FF TURBO2 foam pod under the forefoot.
Cushioning
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 delivers outstanding cushioning, with substantial impact protection under both the heel and forefoot. It absorbs loading effectively across a broad range of forces, and the cushioning remains excellent during prolonged use. This makes it well-suited to runners who prioritize protection throughout longer efforts.
Outstanding cushioning throughout the midsole.
Cushioning remains protective over long efforts.
Cushioning under the heel is outstanding, providing strong protection across the range of forces we tested. It handles lighter landings well and remains highly protective as impacts become harder, making it useful for heel strikers across different body weights and running paces. The improvement over the original ASICS SONICBLAST is mainly at lighter and moderate forces.
The forefoot provides outstanding cushioning, with almost identical impact absorption to the ASICS MEGABLAST. Protection remains exceptional across lighter and harder landings, giving runners plenty of cushioning under the ball of the foot, including during faster efforts or at higher body weights.
This model is among the most protective we've tested so far over the 50km simulated long run, with outstanding cushioning that remains excellent as the distance builds. The ASICS SUPERBLAST 3 edges it, while the Nike Vomero Premium provides even more protection.
Bounciness
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 has decent bounciness. The forefoot combines greater compression with better energy return than the heel, making the rebound more noticeable toward the front of the shoe. The heel feels more restrained, and the overall ride isn't particularly trampoline-like.
Very good forefoot energy return makes the ride feel dynamic.
Decent forefoot compression supports bounce.
Relatively muted energy return at the heel.
Snappiness
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 has adequate snappiness. Its forefoot recovers energy well after bending, but its moderate bending stiffness and soft cushioning keep toe-off from feeling especially quick. The result is a more gradual, rolling transition rather than a particularly forceful release.
Good energy return as the forefoot snaps back.
Soft forefoot and moderate bending stiffness limit snappiness.
The forefoot returns a very good share of the energy stored as it bends, helping it spring back during toe-off. However, its moderate bending stiffness limits how much energy it stores, so that return doesn't produce an especially forceful snap.
Forefoot bending resistance is decent overall. It takes a good amount of force to bend the shoe, but resistance builds only modestly as it flexes farther, limiting how forceful toe-off feels. The forefoot bends more easily than the original ASICS SONICBLAST, even though the rocker still strongly resists flattening.
The forefoot rocker does a good job of rolling you forward through toe-off. The toe is noticeably raised, but the curve itself has a fairly moderate angle, so the geometry isn't especially aggressive. Its shape remains broadly similar to the original ASICS SONICBLAST.
Roll
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 has a great roll. Its rigid rocker resists flattening under load, helping the curved sole guide you through the transition toward toe-off. The heel geometry also supports a smooth entry into that motion. This pronounced guidance comes with less flexibility for runners who prefer the shoe to bend naturally with their foot.
Stiff rocker maintains a smooth forward roll.
Effective heel rocker smooths transitions.
The rocker is exceptionally stiff, resisting flattening much more than unplated shoes like the ASICS SUPERBLAST 3. The plate helps the midsole hold its curved shape and roll you forward through the stride. That pronounced rolling action works well at faster training paces but can feel less natural during very relaxed runs.
There's a substantial amount of foam under both the heel and forefoot, keeping your foot well above the ground. The heel sits a little lower than on the original ASICS SONICBLAST, but this remains a very tall shoe with limited ground feel.
The heel rocker is great, with a steeper curve and a more lifted rear edge than the original ASICS SONICBLAST. This creates a smoother roll forward for heel strikers, making the transition feel less abrupt.
True To Size
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 fits true to size, so you can confidently choose your usual size. Its forefoot offers some lateral room, but the shallow toe box can feel restrictive above the toes, particularly if you need more vertical space.
Length fits true to size.
Forefoot and arch widths match standard sizing.
Shallow toe box limits vertical toe space.
Wet & Warm Weather
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 performs well in wet and warm conditions, with great overall performance for managing heat and water. Its upper offers good breathability, absorbs very little water, and dries quickly afterward. This helps keep your feet ventilated in the heat and prevents the shoe from staying soaked for long after a rainy run.
Good breathability.
Absorbs very little water.
Dries quickly after getting wet.
The upper has good breathability, allowing air to pass through and helping heat escape during warm-weather runs and longer workouts. However, it doesn't provide as much airflow as more ventilated performance shoes like the ASICS METASPEED SKY TOKYO.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is considerably lighter than its predecessor, and it's now even slightly lighter than the ASICS MEGABLAST. Its weight is decent for a shoe with this much cushioning, representing a substantial improvement for faster training. However, it still isn't as light as a dedicated racing shoe like the ASICS METASPEED SKY TOKYO.
This model has a dual-foam construction. FF TURBO2 forms the top layer, above an FF BLAST MAX base. FF TURBO2 is the A-TPU foam used in the ASICS MEGABLAST, while FF BLAST MAX is the main foam in the ASICS NOVABLAST 6. Under the forefoot, an extra FF TURBO2 pod extends down through the lower layer, making it feel quite springy upfront. The heel retains more FF BLAST MAX underneath, so it feels more restrained.
Popular Running Shoe Comparisons
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is a workout shoe built to combine distance and speed. It's a plated option in ASICS' Blast lineup, alongside the unplated ASICS MEGABLAST and ASICS SUPERBLAST 3. Compared with the original ASICS SONICBLAST, its lower weight, improved cushioning, and softer forefoot bring it closer to the MEGABLAST. However, the MEGABLAST remains the better all-around choice thanks to its bouncier ride, but it usually costs quite a bit more.
Among competing workout shoes, the adidas Adizero Boston 13 offers a more traditional alternative. It shares the livelier forefoot and more restrained heel, but has considerably less cushioning and a firmer, snappier feel that may be more appealing for speed work if you are a powerful runner. Another similar super trainer is the HOKA Mach X 3, but the SONICBLAST is lighter and more cushioned, making it the better choice overall and one of the stronger options at this price point.

The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is a better running shoe overall than the HOKA Bondi 8. It's substantially lighter, more cushioned, and livelier, making it better suited to long runs and faster sessions. Choose the cheaper Bondi 8 if you mostly do easy mileage and prioritize a broad, stable platform.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 and ASICS MEGABLAST offer similarly deep cushioning at nearly the same weight, but the MEGABLAST is the better all-rounder. It usually retails for a bit more money, but its bouncier, unplated ride is more versatile for daily miles, long runs, and faster workouts, making the extra cost worthwhile for most runners. Choose the SONICBLAST 2 if you want to save some money and prefer a more pronounced rolling sensation for your fast, long runs.
The ASICS SONICBLAST 2 is a better running shoe than the New Balance SuperComp Rebel for most runners, especially for long runs and racing. It offers more protection over long distances and a more stable platform. Choose the New Balance if you prioritize higher energy return and a lighter, bouncier ride.
Differences Between Sizes And Variants
We bought and tested the ASICS SONICBLAST 2 in men's US size 9, as noted on the label for our pair. The pair we purchased is the White/Stadium Orange colorway, the only available colorway at the time of writing. The SONICBLAST 2 is available in both men's and women's sizing, though unlike some other ASICS models, it doesn't come in wide or extra-wide versions. The design section applies only to the exact model we tested, but we expect other sizes and gender variants to perform similarly.
