The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is a budget lightweight trainer built for faster workouts. Its firm, low-profile feel will suit runners who want a shoe that's light and simple. But its basic foam lacks the cushioning and energy return that runners have come to expect from ASICS' shoes, and it feels unpleasant over longer distances.

Our Verdict
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is a mediocre shoe for running full or half marathons. Its lightweight construction helps it feel nimble when you start the race, but the lack of energy return means you have to work a lot harder to maintain the pace. The thin midsole bottoms out quickly, leaving your legs very little cushioning after the first 10k.
Light weight prevents the shoe from slowing you down.
Cushioning doesn't hold up over long distances.
Lack of energy return makes the ride draining at faster paces.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is a decent shoe for racing shorter distances. With its light build, it stays out of your way and doesn't weigh you down when you're trying to kick. But it also doesn't give much back, and the lack of energy return makes it feel quite inefficient.
Light weight prevents the shoe from slowing you down.
Firm forefoot creates a good platform for strong push-offs.
Lack of energy return makes the ride draining at faster paces.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is okay for long runs, but not great. Its low-stack platform keeps it decently stable even as you fatigue, but it lacks the cushioning to protect against the repeated pounding of longer distances.
Satisfactory stability for long runs.
Cushioning doesn't hold up over long distances.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is satisfactory as a daily trainer. It's stable enough for easy running, and its geometry helps give it a bit of forward roll without feeling too aggressive for casual paces. The cushioning is acceptable for shorter distances, but struggles over longer distances.
Satisfactory stability for daily training.
Limited cushioning reduces its range.

Test Results
Energy Return
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 has abysmal energy return. The very basic foam doesn't rebound very efficiently, making it much harder to sustain momentum when you're running.
Heel landings feel flat.
Not much life in the forefoot when you push off.
Stability
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 has decent stability, thanks to the firm midsole, which gives it a very solid foundation. The relatively low stack height also helps keep the ride grounded. The main concern is the narrow platform, which doesn't give much of a margin for error when landing.
Low stack height keeps the ride grounded.
Very firm midsole creates solid foundation.
Narrow platform demands good balance.
The heel stays exceptionally firm, keeping heel landings stable, but potentially harsh.
Cushioning
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 has rather unremarkable cushioning. The midsole is made of a basic foam that bottoms out when heavy force is applied, and turns into a brick over the course of a long run. Lighter runners will be okay in this shoe, but heavier runners will find it lacks shock absorption.
Forefoot cushioning is decent under lighter loads.
Both heel and forefoot turn harsh when you land with force.
Cushioning bottoms out over long distances.
The heel cushioning is passable. There's just enough padding under the heel to take the sting out of most landings without feeling plush.
Bounciness
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is not a very bouncy shoe. The basic foam doesn't compress very much when you land, so it doesn't rebound very forcefully. Don't expect this shoe to put a spring in your step.
Midsole foam doesn't compress enough to bounce back.
Midsole doesn't return enough energy to feel bouncy.
Snappiness
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 has a reasonable amount of snap. The firm midsole gives you a very direct connection with the ground when you push off, and the forefoot stays stiff enough to give you decent leverage. That said, the forefoot isn't able to store and release energy as it bends and unbends, so it doesn't snap back very well.
Stiff forefoot gives decent leverage as you push off.
Forefoot doesn't return much energy as it unbends, so there's little spring.
The forefoot doesn't give back much energy as it unbends, limiting any spring at push-off.
Roll
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 rolls decently well through stride. The geometry is rockered, but not so aggressively that you'll feel it pushing you onto your toes.
Forefoot is rockered enough to encourage turnover.
Rocker doesn't stay stiff enough to sustain momentum at faster paces.
The rocker holds its shape reasonably well under load, giving a very modest assist to forward momentum.
True To Size
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is true to size for most runners. The length is right on, and the width matches our baseline fit through the arch and forefoot. There's not much vertical clearance over the toes, so it could feel tight if you dorsiflex.
Length is spot on.
Generous width through the arch.
Low vertical clearance over toes.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is one of the lightest shoes that still has a midsole comprised primarily of EVA foam.
The Flytefoam in the ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is EVA foam, a basic compound that's not very responsive by today's standards.
The laces in the ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 have just a bit of stretch, and were able to maintain secure lockdown during testing.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 has mediocre breathability. Compared to the adidas Adizero Evo SL, the ASICS's upper doesn't allow as much airflow, meaning your feet could get quite sweaty on warmer days.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 takes just over a full day to dry after being completely soaked. Unless you run in pouring rain or sweat profusely, you should be able to use the shoe the following day.
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is not waterproof, but it's very repellent, and absorbs a similar amount of water as the adidas Adizero Evo SL.
Popular Running Shoe Comparisons
The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 is a lightweight, budget daily trainer that feels like a blast from the recent past. By current standards, its stack height seems low, and its foam very basic, although both would have been mainstream only a few years earlier. But thanks to more advanced foams, lightweight no longer means low-stack. The PUMA Deviate Pure NITRO, which sits 4mm higher in the heel, is lighter and has much better cushioning and energy return than the HYPER SPEED 6. The Dynafish Xiaonian is both taller and lighter still, and has even better energy return, although the higher stack does make it less stable. If you want the lightest and liveliest of these three shoes, get the Dynafish. If you want the most stable, get the PUMA.

The ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 and ASICS MAGIC SPEED 5 are both lightweight tempo trainers from the same brand, but the MAGIC SPEED is the more advanced shoe. Its combination of carbon plate and more premium foam results in a ride that is more responsive and better cushioned. The HYPER SPEED is less expensive, though, so if price is more important than performance, it could still be a good option.
The HOKA Mach 7 and ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 are both lightweight trainers, but the HOKA is the better shoe for most runners. Its midsole foam absorbs impact better, and it also returns significantly more of the energy you put into it, resulting in a livelier, more cushioned ride. The HYPER SPEED 6 retails at a lower price, so it's still a viable option for runners who don't need much cushioning or bounce.
Differences Between Sizes And Variants
We tested the ASICS HYPER SPEED 6 in men's U.S. size 9, as noted on the label for our pair. The colorway shown here is called Stadium Orange/Singed Red, but is available in other colorways as well. The design section applies only to the exact model we tested, but we expect other sizes to perform similarly.
