The Altra Torin 9 is a dependable daily trainer for neutral runners who prefer a zero-drop platform, which keeps your foot in a flat, natural-feeling position. Its grounded, stable ride can appeal to runners who like to feel connected to the road, though it offers very little bounce and cushioning. It handles easy runs and recovery miles decently well, but feels a lot less convincing when the pace increases.     The Altra Torin 9 is on the heavy side for such a low-stack shoe. With less foam underfoot, shoes like this are usually easier to keep light, but the Torin still feels fairly substantial. The Topo Cyclone 3 is a good example of a similarly grounded trainer that feels much lighter and more nimble.

    We bought and tested the Altra Torin 8 in men's US size 9, as noted on the label for our pair. The pair we purchased is White/Black/Safety Yellow, but you can also buy this shoe in a wide range of colors, depending on the region. This shoe also comes in a wide version for both men and women. The design section applies only to the exact model we tested, but we expect other size variants to perform similarly. For the women's version, the exact results can differ a bit because Altra uses its women-specific "Fit4Her" design, with a slightly narrower profile and female-specific shaping and geometry.

    Popular Running Shoe Comparisons

    The Altra Torin 9 is a low-stack, zero-drop daily trainer built around a wide toe box and great stability. Like the Topo Cyclone 3, it appeals to runners who dislike tapered toe boxes and want room for their toes to spread, but the Topo has a low drop rather than no drop at all. This generally requires less adaptation and tends to place less strain on the calves and Achilles. The Topo is also much lighter and more energetic than the Altra, making it a more capable shoe overall. Altra also offers low-drop models, such as the Altra Experience Flow 3, for runners who want the brand's roomy fit with a small heel lift and more guided transitions.

    The Altra Torin 9 and Topo Cyclone 3 are both low-stack shoes with roomy toeboxes, but they suit different runners. Get the Altra if you're already comfortable with zero-drop shoes and prefer a firm, grounded ride. Get the Topo if you're newer to more minimal footwear, since its low drop is easier to adapt to. It's also the better all-around shoe because its stable platform is paired with a lower weight and more energetic platform, which makes it more versatile for daily training and faster running.
