The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is a low-drop trainer with a relatively wide toe box that's built for faster workouts and can handle shorter races as well. It sits in the middle of Altra's Vanish lineup, bouncier and more cushioned than the Vanish Pulse, but lower-stacked and less aggressive than the racing-focused Vanish Carbon 3. The Vanish Tempo 2 lives up to its name, as it works best at faster paces, and while it's stacked higher than many Altra shoes, your foot still sits close enough to the ground to be very stable. That said, its cushioning is limited, so the shoe doesn't feel comfortable for longer runs, and the fit is a bit short, so consider sizing up.

✅ Buy If:❌ Skip If:
  • You need room for your toes to splay during faster workouts.
  • You want a shoe that feels fast but stable.
  • You want a zero-drop shoe from Altra.
  • You're an advanced runner looking to maximize race-day performance.

Our Verdict

6.8
Half/Full Marathon Racing

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is an okay shoe for longer-distance racing, although it's neither the fastest nor the most comfortable. Its main asset is its amazing ability to return the energy you put into it, which makes it easier to sustain faster paces. The shoe is much heavier than a dedicated racing shoe, however, and the cushioning is inadequate for the marathon distance, so your legs will take quite a beating.

Pros
  • Returns a lot of the energy you put in, helping you hold faster paces.

  • Wide, low platform stays very stable, even as your legs tire.

Cons
  • Much heavier than a dedicated racing shoe.

  • Cushioning is inadequate for the marathon distance, so your legs take a beating.

7.5
5K/10K Racing

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is a good shoe for short-distance racing. The forefoot is firm and snappy, giving you a lively and rewarding push-off that is complemented by the very energetic foam. Several elements that make the shoe more comfortable for regular training make it less efficient on race day, notably its heavier weight and less aggressive rocker, which make the shoe feel more relaxed than a dedicated racing shoe.

Pros
  • Returns a lot of the energy you put in, helping you hold faster paces.

  • Forefoot springs back quickly after bending, keeping toe-off efficient.

Cons
  • Much heavier than a dedicated racing shoe.

6.8
Long Run

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is okay for long runs, but not great. While it does manage to stay very stable, even as your legs tire, it doesn't have much cushioning underfoot. Over the course of a long run, your legs are forced to absorb much more impact, so while the shoe can get you through the distance, you'll feel sore the next day.

Pros
  • Wide, low platform stays very stable, even as your legs tire.

Cons
  • Limited cushioning forces your legs to absorb more impact over a long run.

6.5
Daily Training

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 works alright as a daily trainer. It feels stable and steady, and its excellent energy return helps keep everyday miles lively. Nevertheless, the relative lack of cushioning limits its range to shorter runs, and the plastic plate could feel unnatural for runners who prefer the more natural, minimalist feel of other Altra shoes.

Pros
  • Wide, low platform stays very stable, even as your legs tire.

Cons
  • Plastic plate in midsole can feel unnatural.

    How We Test Running Shoes

We've bought and tested more than 300 running shoes. Every pair purchased with our own money, never supplied or sponsored by brands. Our data-driven tests are designed to go beyond marketing claims, and since every shoe goes through the exact same methodology, you can directly compare results to find the right pair for your needs.

    6.9
    Weight

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is on the lighter end of Altra's scale, weighing less than the Altra Vanish Pulse or Altra Escalante 5, but it's still significantly heavier than the higher-stacked Topo Specter 3.

    Internal Shape
    8.7

    Energy Return

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 has excellent energy return. Both the forefoot and the heel do an amazing job of rebounding when compressed, converting most of the force you apply into forward momentum. The result is a ride that feels efficient at faster paces, making this a very capable shoe for intervals and other faster workouts.

    Pros
    • Returns a lot of the energy you put in, helping you hold faster paces.

    • Heel and forefoot both rebound very well, so the ride feels lively wherever you land.

    Cons
    2 tests
    8.7
    Forefoot Compression Energy Return

The forefoot is even livelier than the heel, returning an excellent share of the energy you put in, which helps you hold faster paces. It too is more effective than the Vanish Carbon 3.

    8.6
    Heel Compression Energy Return

The heel returns an excellent share of the energy loaded into it, so landings feel lively rather than flat. It's even more efficient than the race-focused Altra Vanish Carbon 3.

    7.9

    Stability

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is a very stable shoe. The shoe's wide base gives you a solid platform, and the relatively low stack height means you don't have to worry too much about wobbling. The forefoot is quite firm, which helps you maintain a direct connection to the ground when pushing off, without any mushy feeling. The primary downside is the lack of a gusseted tongue, which can make it harder to get a secure lockdown.

    Pros
    • Wide, low platform stays very stable, even as your legs tire.

    • Firm forefoot keeps you connected to the ground when you push off.

    Cons
    • No gusseted tongue makes it harder to get a secure lockdown.

    4 tests
    9.1
    Forefoot Firmness

The forefoot is very firm, giving you a direct connection to the ground when you push off. It’s less rigid than the Altra Vanish Pulse, but could still feel harsh at faster paces.

    7.9
    Heel Firmness

The heel sits in a  good middle ground, firm enough to feel direct and stable but with a bit more give than the exceptionally firm Altra Vanish Pulse. It’s also far firmer than the soft, wobbly heel of the Topo Specter 3, which helps the Vanish Tempo 2 stay steady when you’re tired.

    6.0

    Cushioning

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 has mediocre cushioning. There's not that much foam under your foot to buffer the shock from landing, so more of the impact is absorbed by your legs. The heel does a better job than the forefoot, but neither is able to cushion against heavy impacts, so heavier runners will not get much protection from the road.

    Pros
    • Heel offers more protection than the forefoot.

    Cons
    • Limited cushioning forces your legs to absorb more impact over a long run.

    • Heavier runners get little protection from the road.

    3 tests
    6.4
    Heel Cushioning

The heel provides only mediocre protection, absorbing a moderate amount of shock at lighter loads but offering less once impacts get harder, so heavier heel strikers will feel more of the road. It’s far better than the Altra Vanish Pulse, which has very little material under the heel, but well short of the Topo Specter 3.

    5.6
    Forefoot Cushioning

The forefoot has even less to offer, with sub-par protection that can leave the ball of your foot feeling harsh on harder landings or at faster paces.

    9.2

    Wet & Warm Weather

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 does exceptionally well in wet and warm weather. The upper is incredibly breathable, which helps your feet avoid overheating, and the shoe doesn't absorb that much water, so it doesn't get waterlogged if you run in the rain. This also helps it dry very quickly, so even if you run in pouring rain, the shoe can still be dry and ready to run again the next day.

    Pros
    • Very breathable upper helps keep your feet from overheating.

    • Absorbs little water, so it doesn’t get waterlogged in the rain.

    • Dries quickly, so it’s ready again the next day.

    Cons
    3 tests
    9.0
    Breathability

The upper is highly breathable, letting plenty of air through to keep your feet cool during hard efforts and on hot days.

    9.4
    Time-To-Dry

This shoe dries quickly, taking less than a day to dry fully, so even if you run through puddles or sweat heavily, it’ll be ready again the next day. It dries noticeably faster than the Altra Vanish Pulse and far faster than the Topo Specter 3.

    6.7

    Bounciness

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is reasonably bouncy. The midsole is too thin to compress that deeply, so you don't sink in that much before rebounding, but the excellent energy return does still put a spring in your step.

    Pros
    • Returns a lot of the energy you put in, helping you hold faster paces.

    Cons
    • Thin midsole compresses little, so there isn’t much sink-in before the rebound.

    2 tests
    5.9
    Heel Compression Depth

The heel compresses only a limited amount, so landings feel firm with little sink-in before the rebound.

    5.0
    Forefoot Compression Depth

The foam compresses very little beneath the ball of your foot, which limits how much sink-in and bounce you feel. The Altra Vanish Carbon 3 compresses far deeper, giving it a much bouncier feel at toe-off, despite having lower energy return.

    7.5

    Snappiness

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 has good snap. The forefoot is very firm, and when it's bent, it springs back quickly, returning a good share of the force required to bend it. That said, it bends a little too easily to provide much leverage, and the shallow angle of the front rocker means that the snap is less propulsive.

    Pros
    • Firm forefoot keeps you connected to the ground when you push off.

    • Forefoot springs back quickly after bending, keeping toe-off efficient.

    Cons
    • Forefoot bends too easily to provide much leverage.

    3 tests
    7.2
    Forefoot Bending Stiffness

The forefoot offers a decent amount of resistance to bending, providing some leverage at toe-off without feeling rigid. It takes more force to bend than either the Altra Vanish Pulse or the Topo Specter 3.

    6.7
    Forefoot Rocker Geometry

Your toe is raised a fair amount, but at a very shallow angle, so the forefoot rocker gives you a mild assist onto your toes without feeling aggressive. It’s a little more pronounced than the Altra Vanish Pulse’s and far gentler than the very aggressive Topo Specter 3’s.

    7.0

    Roll

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 has a decent roll. Both the front and rear rocker have a rather gentle slope, so you're not pushed forward that quickly during your stride. The effect is more of a gentle assist than a noticeable push.

    Pros
    • Gentle front and rear rockers give a mild assist through your stride.

    Cons
    • Rocker is too shallow to give significant assistance.

    3 tests
    7.0
    Rocker Stiffness

The rocker takes a decent amount of force to flatten, holding its shape much better than the very compliant rockers on the Altra Vanish Pulse and Topo Specter 3. That helps keep you rolling forward at faster paces, though it’s far less rigid than a more advanced tempo shoe like the ASICS SONICBLAST 2.

    Stack Heights

Compared to the rest of Altra's lineup, the Vanish Tempo 2 has a high drop and tall stack, but compared to the broader running shoe market, both are actually on the low end.

    7.8

    True To Size

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is close to true to size, but if you are normally between two sizes, opt for the larger one, as we found the shoe to be on the shorter end of true-to-size. Otherwise, the shoe features Altra's anatomical toe box, with a narrower arch but a wider toe box than conventional running shoes.

    Pros
    • Wide toe box gives your toes room to splay.

    Cons
    • Length is on the short side.

    4 tests
    7.0
    Length Fit

The shoe runs a bit short, so if you are choosing between two sizes, go with the larger one.

    Popular Running Shoe Comparisons

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is an uptempo trainer that marks a further shift away from Altra's zero-drop, minimalist origins. Altra loyalists who want a shoe with zero heel-to-toe drop and a wider toe box, even if that means less cushioning and energy return, should stick with the Altra Vanish Pulse. If you want Altra's most race-worthy shoe, get the Altra Vanish Carbon 3. If you're looking for a shoe with an anatomical toe box for faster workouts, the Topo Specter 3 is a lighter, bouncier alternative.

If you're looking for a shoe to race a 5K or 10K, see our recommendations for the best running shoes for 5K and 10K.

    Topo Specter 3

The Topo Specter 3 is a much more capable uptempo trainer than the Altra Vanish Tempo 2. Both shoes have a wide 'anatomical' toe box, but the Topo shoe is lighter, better cushioned and more efficient at returning the energy you put into each stride. The main advantage of the Altra shoe is that its lower stack height keeps it more stable than the softer, higher stacked Topo.

    Altra Vanish Carbon 3

The Altra Vanish Carbon 3 is a more marathon-ready shoe than the Altra Vanish Tempo 2. The aggressive rocker of the Vanish Carbon 3, combined with its stiffer carbon plate, give it an edge on race day, especially for longer races, where its better cushioning keeps your legs better protected . The Vanish Tempo 2 has a more relaxed geometry and a plastic plate that feels more suited to regular training runs, although it's still a capable short-distance racer.

    adidas Zenboost

The adidas Zenboost is a better choice than the Altra Vanish Tempo 2 for most runners. The two shoes have similar stack heights, but the adidas is lighter and better cushioned. Both shoes are better suited to shorter distances, so the Zenboost's lower price tag makes it a more sensible choice. Both shoes are very wide around the ball of your foot, but the adidas tapers more toward the toes, so if you want more room for your toes to splay, the Altra is the better choice.

    ASICS METASLEEK

The Altra Vanish Tempo 2 is a better choice for most runners than the ASICS METASLEEK. The Altra shoe has a bouncier, more cushioned midsole and a wider, more stable base, that gives it a longer distance range than the thin, lightweight ASICS shoe. The METASLEEK’s ultralight, flexible build will suit efficient runners who want a fast, minimal feel for short races or workouts. Both shoes run slightly short.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

We bought and tested the Altra Vanish Tempo 2 in men's U.S. size 9, as noted on the label for our pair. The pair we purchased is the White/Silver colorway, but you can also buy this shoe in other colors, depending on your region. The Vanish Tempo 2 is only available in standard width for both men and women. The design section applies only to the exact model we tested, but we expect other size variants to perform similarly. For the women's version of this shoe, the exact results may differ because Altra uses its "Fit4Her" design, with a slightly narrower profile and female-specific shaping and geometry.
