We've bought and tested more than 250 running shoes. Every pair purchased with our own money, never supplied or sponsored by brands. Our data-driven tests are designed to go beyond marketing claims, and since every shoe goes through the exact same methodology, you can directly compare results to find the right pair for your needs.

The Topo Specter 3 is a significant upgrade over the Topo Specter 2. It's lighter, more cushioned, and much bouncier, with a far more energetic ride that turns the Specter into a full-bore super trainer rather than just a lightweight performance shoe. The Specter 2 is a more stable option; however, the Specter 3's performance far outshines it on every type of run. That said, if you can find the Specter 2 on sale, it could serve as a great training shoe if you want to save the Specter 3 for race day.
