Our Verdict

Samsung S95F OLED

LG G5 OLED

The Samsung S95F and the LG G5 are both fantastic OLED TVs that deliver exceptional picture quality. The LG is slightly more enticing for use in a dark home theater, since it gets a bit brighter in HDR, has better processing, and supports Dolby Vision. However, the Samsung still looks incredible in dark rooms. In bright rooms, blacks are raised on the Samsung, but its anti-reflective coating is so effective that it essentially eliminates glare, making it the better choice for very bright environments. As good as the LG is, it has diagonal lines in darker scenes that are noticeable when sitting up close. It also exhibits snow-like noise in certain dark scenes that’s noticeable from a normal viewing distance, along with a few other issues that may bother some people, making it hard to recommend over the Samsung.

I’m glad LG Display’s 4-Stack panel is starting to catch up to Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panels. QD-OLED still seems to be the better display technology for now, but when bundled with all of Samsung’s poor design decisions (anti-glare, HDR10+ only, Tizen OS, etc.) I actually think LG’s 4-stack can come out ahead.

I accepted an 83" S95F as a compensation for my old S95C 77" What I didn’t know because Samsung likes to lie, is that the 83" uses a WOLED panel from LG without MLA, and when combined with the mate finish, the picture quality, especially in dark scenes, it’s horrible. Overall, imo, for a true cinematic experience, the G5 is better than the S95F because it doesn’t have the mate finish.

Looking to upgrade to a 77". Any comments on best TV for watching Hockey? So far, I am leaning toward these two - S95F and G5.

If you plan to watch in bright rooms, the S95F will probably be best if you’re bother by reflections. However, for cinematic experience, the mate screen is terrible imo. It removes a lot of the crystal clear details, especially in dark scenes. I have the 83" and sadly it has a Woled panel without the MLA panel. This makes it way worse than any of the 77" options. I’m trying to sell and get LG G5. Hope it helps

Sounds like the s95f and g5 are neck and neck as far as overall recommendation. If the s95f as reviewed here came in 83 inch I would have purchased it over the G5 assuming a fair price when factoring in cost for extended warranty. One thing these reviews don’t cover is warranty and past reliability of these TVs and I absolutely would never buy the S95f without a warranty given reviews I see on BB of previous year’s models. For the G5, I just purchased from Costco and will rely on them doubling up the manufacture’s warranty, the LG panel warranty, and the 2nd rate all state warranty that is not better than best buy’s but is thrown in for free without the extra cost. For the $1500 best buy wanted for the 83 inch I could invest that money in stocks and self insure the TV. Another thing that is not obvious is that at glance is that the variants list here implies this review would apply for all sizes listed but the reality is the 83 inch s95f would score differently. I am assuming the best 83 inch oled I can buy was the G5 and not the s95f but since I haven’t seen a review of the s95F at 83 inches I can’t be certain. As reviewed here though, qd-oled version of the s95f and G5 are neck and neck at the same size so when comparing a 77 qd-oled vs 83 G5, it’s the 83 inch G5 for the close win. That said, I do wish Sony would enter the conversation as that’s my favorite brand and comes with my favorite OS by default. In fact I’ve been force to buy a google streamer to replace the pretty anemic WebOS and the not so great remote that comes with the TV. By the way for those reading this and on the fence, both TVs supposed faults are not nearly as bad as advertised unless you are obsessed with this stuff and looking for things to complain about. For the s95F the glare protection actually works very well and looks good to me. The only perceived negative is the colors don’t quite shine the way you are used to with a glossy screen and the blacks sometime don’t look as deep as on a glossy screen, but again, you get the benefit of no glare or reflections from windows and ceiling lights which at first watch feels funny because you are so used to having to subconsciously block out reflections that are ever present on glossy screens. Those reflections just aren’t there for the s95f. For the G5, the HDR issue has been a non-issue for me. When I go looking for it I can’t tell if potential things I see are supposed to look the way they look or not. It’s just not obvious enough that there is any issue at all. Also, HDR10 is but a small percentage of what I’ve been watching anyway. That said, I am still looking forward to the updates that fix the HDR10 issue so that I don’t have to wonder if I’m not looking at the picture intended. I do expect those updates will come, and even knowing I may be wrong about that, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying this wonderful TV picture at all. Both of these TVs would be the best TVs you’d ever owned.

I had the S95C 77" and it was amazing. Sadly after a year and a half I started having issues with the panel and after 3 eternal months, Samsung (in my country) finally decided to replace my TV and compensate me for the gross negligence of their tech/customer service. I was given the S95F 83" and I do not like it one bit. Yeah the 6 extra inches are great, but the mate coating, imo, destroys the Oled experience 100% the blacks and the details in the dark scenes are completely gone. I am trying to sell and buy the 77" LG G5. I do not care for that extreme glare-free coating since my main usage is “cinema” experience… If you’re looking to use your TV mainly for cinematic purposes I do not recommend the S95F at all. Especially the 83" because it comes with a LG woled panel without the MLA layer.

Hi Guys, I’m worried about last sentence in this comparison “As good as the LG is, it has diagonal lines in darker scenes that are noticeable when sitting up close. It also exhibits snow-like noise in certain dark scenes that’s noticeable from a normal viewing distance, along with a few other issues that may bother some people, making it hard to recommend over the Samsung.” - is this really noticeable? I was aiming to buy G5 for PS5 pro, to room without heavy sunlight but those diagonal lines and snowlike noise is a bit alarming, do you think it could be fixed by software in future or this is hardware issue? or should I consider S95F to be safe? I would be bit angry if all G5 issues would be fixed in new release of lower model like C6 in 2026

Hey! The diagonal lines likely won’t be fixed with a firmware update, since those are an intentional software choice to help combat black chrominance overshoot. However, as long as you’re sitting at a normal viewing distance (more than 4 feet away from the screen) you won’t notice them. The snow-like noise is pretty subtle and doesn’t affect the vast majority of scenes. LG also recently released a firmware update to fix the contrast-based sharpening that was always on, which made that snow-like noise way more perceptible than it should be. We haven’t had a chance to retest the TV with that firmware, but other trustworthy reviewers have, and it sounds like it’s no longer a big issue at all. If it gives you any peace of mind, I just ordered a G5 for myself the other day, and I’m usually quite sensitive to stuff like that. I really don’t think you should worry about the dithering unless you’re sitting super close to the screen.

When dealing with TVs of this tier, the lack of Dolby Vision isnt a hindrance. Its like a set of instructions guiding how TVs express their colours, contrast and brightness. Its important for lower tier TVs with lower nits as it helps them retain the intended visual identity of a program thats mastered at nits much higher than the TVs capable of outputting. But these higher specced TVs are able to faithfully represent content off the back of their specs. So no Dolby Vision isnt a massive deal.

Some amlogic tv boxes with custom FW can decode even DV FEL 7, so it’s possible to have DV on Samsung TVs (Player-led HDR)
