The Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K is a full-size model in Keychron's Q Ultra 8K series of wireless mechanical keyboards. It follows the Keychron Q Max series, which had very similar overall build and characteristics. As the name suggests, these keyboards increase polling rates to 8000Hz to improve latency. This new version upgrades the battery from 180 hours to 660 hours according to Keychron's estimates, thanks to the more power-efficient ZMK firmware. It also uses new stabilizers and swaps Gateron Juptier switches for Keychron-branded Silk POM switches. All keyboards in the lineup feature solid aluminum cases and double-gasket mounting, which give them a softer typing feel. They're available with various Keychron Silk POM mechanical switch options, and their PCBs are hot-swappable if you want to change out the stock switches. You can connect them via Bluetooth or through the included USB-A or USB-C 2.4GHz receivers. Each keyboard also includes a small toolkit so you can fully disassemble it to add, remove, or modify elements yourself.

See the Differences Between Variants section for information on other size variants.

Our Verdict

Gaming

The Keychron Q Ultra 8K series keyboards are great for any type of gaming scenario. While the increase to an 8K polling rate hasn't yielded any tangible improvement in latency, the overall package remains quite potent, with outstandingly low single-key and multi-key latency. These keyboards have outstanding build quality with pre-lubed switches and stabilizers that feel consistent whether you're gaming or typing. Keychron's software is also very feature-rich and well laid out. You'll be able to customize macros, backlighting, and polling, and set different profiles. It even includes an SOCD function, which isn't as common for traditional mechanical keyboards.

Pros
  • Outstanding overall build quality.

  • Outstanding all-around raw performance.

  • 8000Hz polling rate using a wired or 2.4GHz wireless connection.

Cons
  • No-shine through keycaps.

Office

The Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K are impressive office keyboards. These keyboards have excellent build quality and a double gasket-mounted design that gives typing a soft feel. They're quiet too, thanks to multiple layers of sound-dampening material inside the case and the improved pre-lubed stabilizers. You can connect wirelessly through the included 2.4GHz receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices at once, which is ideal if you want to use your keyboard with multiple devices. Key remapping, backlight customization, and custom profiles are available through configuration software, allowing you to easily tailor the keyboard to your needs. The main drawback is the tall profile. It's comfortable once you adjust, but a wrist rest makes a noticeable difference, and Keychron doesn't include one in the box. The KSA profile on the keycaps also has an aggressive concave shape, which may take a little while to get used to.

Pros
  • Outstanding overall build quality.

  • Connects wirelessly with 2.4GHz receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices simultaneously.

  • Quiet typing noise.

  • Improved pre-lubed stabilizers

Cons
None

Mobile/Tablet

The Keychron Q Ultra 8K series keyboards are passable for mobile use, but they're clearly not made for this use case. While they're very flexible when it comes to connectivity, these are very large and heavy keyboards that aren't made to be transported.

Pros
  • Outstanding overall build quality.

  • Connects wirelessly with 2.4GHz receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices simultaneously.

Cons
  • No-shine through keycaps.

  • Quite large and extremely heavy.

Programming

The Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K are great keyboards for programming. They connect wirelessly through a USB receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices at once, and their build quality is outstanding. The typing experience is great too, though the tall profile means a wrist rest is worth considering for longer sessions. Unfortunately, Keychron doesn't include one in the box. Most size variants in the series don't have dedicated macro keys, but you can program macros to any key through the configuration software. The software also gives you ample room to customize the keyboard to your preferences. The full RGB backlighting uses south-facing LEDs, and the included keycaps don't feature shine-through legends, so the lighting is mostly decorative.

Pros
  • Outstanding overall build quality.

  • Connects wirelessly with 2.4GHz receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices simultaneously.

  • Quiet typing noise.

  • Improved pre-lubed stabilizers

Cons
  • No-shine through keycaps.

Entertainment / HTPC

The Keychron Q Ultra 8K keyboards are only passable for use with a home theater PC. The dedicated media keys only work using the Mac compatibility mode. These keyboards are also extremely big and lack shine-through keycaps, which isn't ideal in low-light scenarios. The keyboard does have a knob and wireless connectivity, which are definitely nice pluses for this use case.

Pros
  • Connects wirelessly with 2.4GHz receiver or via Bluetooth with up to three devices simultaneously.

Cons
  • No-shine through keycaps.

  • No dedicated media keys (in Windows mode).

They've got outstanding single-key latency and excellent multi-key latency. Whether you use them wired or through the included 2.4GHz receiver, you'll get an effective update rate of 8000Hz without any bottlenecking from other latency elements.

Pros
  • Outstanding all-around raw performance.

  • 8000Hz polling rate using a wired or 2.4GHz wireless connection.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Keychron Q Ultra 8K series keyboards are available fully assembled in two colorways with Keychron Silk POM switches. We bought and tested the fully assembled Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K with Keychron Silk POM Red switches. We typically include a photo of the product's label, but, like other models in Keychron's Q lineup, these keyboards have no visible label, aside from small print on the bottom case.

Here's a table with the different variants currently offered in this series:

    Popular Keyboard Comparisons

The Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K is a high-end mechanical keyboard in Keychron's current flagship Q Ultra 8K line. It has an outstanding build quality and typing experience thanks to its solid aluminum cases, multiple layers of acoustic dampening material, and a double-gasket-mount design. This creates an amazing typing experience with a very pleasing sound signature. It can be seen as a successor to the Keychron Q6 Max, with slight improvements across the board. The first change is the polling rate, which can now reach up to 8000Hz. While this can seem like a big upgrade, it doesn't really translate into tangible benefits in our testing. The pre-lubed stabilizers have been refined to remove the rattling on the larger keys. Another major back-end change is the switch from the QMK to the more power-efficient ZMK firmware. This allows the new keyboard to reach more than 660 hours of battery life, up from 180 hours on the previous model. While these additions aren't revolutionary, they make up for a more polished overall package.

The Keychron Q Ultra 8K keyboards are high-end keyboards that come with a high price. While they don't have any glaring flaws, cheaper keyboards such as the Keychron V Max series or even the Logitech Alto Keys K98M deliver similarly good typing experiences at much lower prices. The Q Ultra's sturdy aluminum cases set them apart from these models, but performance-wise, they remain very similar to the V Series boards. This is even more the case for the Keychron V3 Ultra 8K, which has virtually the same internals. Also, while the Q Ultra keyboards can serve as a very solid gaming keyboard thanks to their outstanding latency performance, gaming-centric keyboards like the NuPhy WH80 deliver similarly good typing and better overall performance for this use case.

    Wooting 60HE v2

    Track

The Wooting 60HE v2 and the Keychron Q6 [Q1, Q3, etc.] Ultra 8K are two keyboards with very different use cases. The Wooting is a Hall effect gaming-focused keyboard that supports adjustable actuation. It has exceptionally good latency performance, and its software is among the best available. It has all the functions you might need to customize its performance to your preferences, including advanced features such as Rapid Trigger, SOCD, and Mod Tap. The Keychron, on the other hand, is more focused on office work. It includes a softer gasket-mount and multiple layers of sound-dampening. It also includes wireless connectivity, which gives you a lot of flexibility if you want to use your keyboard with multiple devices.

Keychron Q5 Max [Q1 Max, Q2 Max, etc.]

    Track

The Keychron Q5 Max [Q1 Max, Q2 Max, etc.] and the Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K [Q1, Q3, etc.] are very similar wireless, high-end keyboard lineups in Keychron's wider catalog. The newer Ultra 8K lineup introduces a few incremental changes. The most significant is the switch from QMK to ZMK firmware, which allows for substantially longer battery life. The stabilizers have also been refined, reducing rattling on larger keys. The polling rate has increased to 8000Hz, but this doesn’t translate into any meaningful real-world latency improvement.

    Logitech Alto Keys K98M

    Track

The Logitech Alto Keys K98M and the Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K both have gasket mounts, which make for a springy feeling typing experience. The Keychron distinguishes itself in a few ways. Its build quality is better overall, and it delivers much more reliable raw performance whether you use it wirelessly or wired. It's much more expensive, however, but the higher price point does translate into a stronger overall package. The Keychron is also part of a wider lineup, so there are plenty of other smaller size variants, including a 75% model if you want to save some desk space.

    NuPhy WH80

    Track

The NuPhy WH80 and the Keychron Q6 Ultra 8K are high-end wireless keyboards, but they serve different main use cases. The NuPhy is a gaming keyboard with adjustable actuation switches and exceptional raw performance. It also delivers excellent overall typing quality with smooth switches and a well-rounded sound signature. The Keychron is available in many different sizes and is more focused on office work. It includes multiple layers of sound-dampening and a double-gasket design. It still delivers excellent gaming performance, even if it doesn't include advanced functions that only work with Hall effect switches. Note that while the Q6 is a full-size layout, the Keychron is part of a wider lineup, so there are plenty of other smaller size variants, including a 75% model to save some desk space.
