The Helix Midnight 2024 is a mid-range bed-in-a-box mattress. It has a hybrid design with a support layer made of individually wrapped pocket coils, a polyfoam transition layer, and two comfort layers: a polyfoam layer and a memory foam layer on top.

It has a medium level of firmness, making it suitable for average to lighter back and stomach sleepers and average to heavier side sleepers. Heavier back and stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer model to keep the spine aligned, while lighter side sleepers may prefer something plusher, so their hips and shoulders can sink far enough in, relieving pressure. This mattress is moderately bouncy, and while you don't sink into it much at all, it offers a fair amount of contouring, so you feel the surface mold around your body.

Our Verdict

8.2
Sleeping (In Development)

The Helix Midnight provides an impressive sleeping experience. It has fantastic edge support. Thanks to the tightly wound pocket coils that reinforce the edges, you can sit or sleep right next to the sides without worrying about slipping off. This mattress is also very responsive, recovering its shape pretty quickly when compressed, so it's easy to move around. It's very good at cooling too, and while it heats up a bit at the beginning of the night, its performance improves throughout the rest of the night. Motion dissipation is a bit of a weak point. You feel most motion near the source, but some movement travels throughout the mattress as well, taking a moment to dissipate. It still dampens enough movement for most people, but if you're a light sleeper or sleep with a partner who tosses and turns, it might not be enough to avoid disturbing you.

Pros
  • Great responsiveness makes it easier to shift sleeping positions.

  • Fantastic edge support, so you can sleep comfortably near the sides.

  • Very good cooling.

  • Decent motion dissipation, so movement is less noticeable.

  • Medium firmness is ideal for average to lighter back and stomach sleepers and average to heavier side sleepers.

Cons
  • Warms up somewhat at the beginning of the night.

  • Motion isolation may not be effective enough for partnered or light sleepers.

  • Uses only low-quality foam, which will sag prematurely.

  • Likely too firm for lighter side sleepers and too soft for heavier back and stomach sleepers.

7.9
Cooling

The Helix Midnight is very good at cooling. It keeps you very cool overnight, transferring a lot of heat away from you, so you don't wake up overheated. However, its cooling is just decent during the first hour of the night, so if you have trouble falling asleep in the heat or if you sleep hot in general, you may need an option that transfers more heat away from you at the beginning of the night.

Pros
  • Very good cooling.

Cons
  • Warms up somewhat at the beginning of the night.

7.4
Motion Dissipation

The Helix Midnight offers satisfactory motion isolation. Most movement is noticeable near the source, and while this mattress is pretty good at keeping motion localized, you can still feel smaller shifts from farther away. When your sleeping partner rolls over, for example, you feel it mainly in the lumbar, but a little bit at the head and foot of the bed as well. Motion takes a moment to dissipate as well, making it more noticeable. While its performance should suffice for most people, partnered and light sleepers may prefer something that dampens motion more effectively.

Pros
  • Decent motion dissipation, so movement is less noticeable.

Cons
  • Motion isolation may not be effective enough for partnered or light sleepers.

9.6
Edge Support

The Helix Midnight has exceptional edge support. There are tightly coiled pocket springs built into the edges for extra support in this area. You can sit or sleep right next to the sides without worrying about slipping off. This extra support also makes it easier to get in or out of bed, especially for people with mobility issues.

Pros
  • Fantastic edge support, so you can sleep comfortably near the sides.

Cons
None
8.1
Responsiveness

The Helix Midnight delivers great responsiveness. When you compress the mattress, it pushes back, recovering its shape pretty quickly. This responsiveness makes it easy to move around, so you don't feel constricted or stuck as you try to change sleeping positions.

Pros
  • Great responsiveness makes it easier to shift sleeping positions.

Cons
None
5.4
Longevity

The Helix Midnight isn't a durable mattress. It doesn't contain any dense, good-quality foam layers; instead, it uses less dense, lower-quality foam. The mattress will lose its shape, sag, and develop permanent body impressions faster compared with mattresses that use higher-quality materials.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Uses only low-quality foam, which will sag prematurely.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Helix Midnight 2024 is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Short Queen (60" x 74"), and RV King (72" x 80"). Two upgrades are available for this mattress: the GlacioTex Cooling Pillow Top, meant to be instantly cooling, and the ErgoAlign Layer, meant for people with lower back pain. We tested the Queen-sized 2024 model with no additional upgrades, and our review is only valid for that variant. See the first label and the second label for our unit. There's also a newer version of this model, the Helix Midnight 2025.

If you encounter a different variant or have experience with one that performs differently, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Helix Midnight 2024 is an impressive mid-range hybrid bed-in-a-box with a medium firmness level. It's an outdated version of the Helix Midnight 2025, which has redesigned foam layers. The company also makes the Helix Midnight Luxe 2024, which was also redesigned. Compared to the Luxe model, the Midnight performs really well. Despite a much lower price tag, it provides better edge support, so you can sleep comfortably no matter how close to the side you are, and it's more cooling.

Compared to other hybrids, this mattress has great, though not outstanding, performance. Its edge support is its strongest aspect, outperforming most other hybrid options. You can sleep right next to the side without worrying about falling off. While it's not quite cooling enough for hot sleepers, its cooling performance rivals that of the much pricier Stearns & Foster Lux Estate as well. On the other hand, its motion isolation is a bit below average. You'll feel more movement on this mattress compared to other hybrids, like the Nectar Classic Hybrid, so it's not the best option for couples. Still, it's a solid option if you're not a particularly light sleeper.

If you're wondering what we recommend, see our recommendations for the best mattresses, the best memory foam mattresses, or the best mattresses for side sleepers.

    Helix Midnight Luxe 2025

The Helix Midnight Luxe 2025 is an updated version of the Helix Midnight 2024. It has a different feel and a slightly better performance overall. The 2025 version has a medium firmness level, so it's a little firmer than the medium-plush 2024 version. It offers better cooling as well as marginally better edge support and motion dissipation. However, it uses less resilient memory foam in its comfort layer and also includes a layer of memory foam in its quilted layer, which results in a less responsive mattress.

    Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid

The Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid and the Helix Midnight 2024 are evenly matched overall, but they have different strengths, and you may prefer either depending on your priorities. The medium-plush Sealy has better motion dissipation, so it's the better bet if you have a sleeping partner who tosses and turns. It's more responsive as well, making it easier to move around. The Helix has a medium level of firmness. It comes out ahead for edge support, making it even more comfortable to sleep next to the sides. The Helix is slightly more cooling, too, though neither option is ideal for hot sleepers.

    Saatva Classic

The Helix Midnight 2024 is a better option than the Saatva Classic for most people. Both mattresses have a medium level of firmness, but the Helix comes out ahead in a few areas. The biggest difference is in edge support. On the Helix, you can sleep right next to the edge without worrying about slipping off. It's more cooling, too, and while it's not quite cooling enough for hot sleepers, it's a significant improvement over the Saatva. The Helix has slightly better motion isolation as well, though it's probably not a big enough difference to be noticeable. The one area where the Saatva comes out ahead is responsiveness. It responds more quickly when compressed, making it easier to move around on. Still, unless responsiveness is your top priority, the Helix is a better choice.

    Bear Elite Hybrid

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a better choice for most people than the Helix Midnight 2024. The Bear is a medium-firm option that stands out for its edge support and responsiveness. These strengths make it very easy to move around on and mean you can comfortably sleep right next to the sides. The Bear also has better motion isolation than the Helix, so movement is less likely to disturb you. The Helix has a medium level of firmness. It's slightly more cooling than the Bear, but only by a hair, and neither option is quite cooling enough for hot sleepers. Unless you need a softer option, the Bear is the better choice.

Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance

We've recently started testing mattresses. We use objective data and repeatable testing for key characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, to ensure each mattress gets the same treatment. Since we buy all of our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials. Our approach gives us unprecedented insight into how each product design decision contributes to a mattress's overall performance and feel, and allows us to tailor our results to different body types and sleeping positions.

The Helix Midnight mattress has a medium level of firmness. It's a good option for lighter and average back and stomach sleepers, as well as average and heavier side sleepers. Heavier back and stomach sleepers will likely sink too far into this mattress and need something firmer to keep the spine aligned. Conversely, lighter side sleepers will likely need something softer to relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders.

The Helix Midnight mattress delivers great responsiveness. It responds pretty quickly when compressed, so it's easy to move around or change sleeping positions. While the upper comfort layer is slow-moving memory foam, the resilient polyfoam in the next layer down helps the mattress adapt more quickly, so you feel the hugging effect of memory foam without feeling held in place.

This mattress provides decent motion isolation. You feel most movements nearby, and while movement is less noticeable from farther away, a moderate amount still travels throughout the mattress. So when your pet hops onto the foot of the bed, you notice movement in that area, but also feel a smaller shift at the lumbar and head of the bed. The movement takes a moment to dissipate as well, so it's a bit more likely to disturb you. While this is unlikely to actually wake most people, if you're a light sleeper or you sleep with a partner, you may need something with better performance in this area, like the Nectar Premier Hybrid.

It has outstanding edge support. Thanks to the tightly wound pocket coils reinforcing the edges, the sides don't compress much at all when you sit on or sleep near them. This makes it easier to get in or out of bed, extends the usable sleeping surface, and makes sleeping close to the edges more comfortable.

This mattress is very good at keeping you cool. It transfers a lot of heat away from you over an eight-hour period, keeping most sleepers comfortably cool throughout the night. Unfortunately, its cooling performance is a little slow to start. During the first hour of the night, its cooling is decent, but not great, so you may heat up a bit as you fall asleep. If you sleep hot or have trouble falling asleep in a warm environment, you may prefer something that's more efficient at the start of the night.

    Pocket Coils

15-gauge pocket coils reinforce the sides of the mattress. While this is a higher gauge than the 14-gauge pocket springs in the support layer, the edge coils are more tightly wound, offering more resistance when compressed. This gives the mattress its outstanding edge support.

Resilient polyfoam makes up the lower comfort layer, adding responsiveness and a bit of bounce. Firmer polyfoam makes up the transition layer, ensuring you don't sink too far into the mattress or feel the individual springs beneath you.

None of the foam is dense enough to meet the standard for good quality. The memory foam upper comfort layer, the polyfoam lower comfort layer, and the polyfoam transition layer are all less dense, lower-quality foams, and you can expect them to sag and develop permanent body impressions sooner than denser foams.

This mattress has 3.3" (8.4 cm) of foam above its layer of pocket coils. The memory foam upper comfort layer is 1.5" (3.8 cm) thick and most people will completely compress this layer. The resilient polyfoam lower comfort layer is 1.1" (2.7 cm) and makes the mattress a bit easier to move around on. The transition layer is also made of polyfoam and at 0.7" (1.9 cm) it's pretty thin, but it's firm as well, adding a bit of extra support to the heavier parts of your body that don't quite sink into the springs below.

The spring layer consists of pocket springs, which offer better contouring and motion isolation because they each compress independently of neighbouring coils. The springs are 14-gauge, offering medium firmness, and the layer isn't very dense. Together with the softer foam layers, this layer produces a medium mattress with a somewhat airy and yielding feel.

The foam layers have a simple design in terms of firmness, with the softest layer at the top and progressively firmer layers going down. The upper comfort layer is soft memory foam, which relieves pressure and contours your body closely. The lower comfort layer is medium-firm polyfoam, which helps support the recessed parts of your body that don't sink very far into the mattress. The polyfoam transition layer is the firmest overall, offering more robust support and making sure you don't sink too far into the springs below. This design helps distribute weight evenly, reducing pressure on areas that sink most deeply into the mattress, like the hips and shoulders for side sleepers.

The pocket spring layer is the firmest part of the mattress, though compared with most hybrid and innerspring models, the springs are still fairly soft. They offer flexible support for the heaviest parts of your body, like the lumbar, hips, or shoulders, depending on how you sleep. Combined with the softer foam layers, the springs produce a medium level of firmness.

The memory foam upper comfort layer has very low resilience, which is expected of memory foam and helps to relieve pressure. The slow-moving nature of memory foam can make it more difficult to move around on, but the resilient polyfoam comfort layer below helps to offset this effect. The polyfoam transition layer is less resilient, but still has a bit of bounce, pushing back when compressed to help with support.
