The Epson SureColor P700 is a 13-inch professional photo printer. This print-only model succeeds the Epson SureColor P600, incorporating a new 10-cartridge system in a more compact format. It includes a darker and a lighter shade of magenta, gray, and cyan, as well as a photo black, matte black, yellow, and violet cartridge. The printer also incorporates a new 4.3" touch screen interface and supports Epson's feature-rich Smart Panel application. It's compatible with a large variety of printing sizes up to 13" x 19", paper rolls, and media up to 1.5 mm thick.

Our Verdict

7.7
Family

The Epson SureColor P700 is a dedicated photo printer. It will do a wonderful job if you plan to print mainly pictures, but it isn't adapted to a regular family printer workload. Although it produces excellent documents in terms of clarity, it's very slow, and its ink is expensive for regular document printing. It also lacks a scanner, which can be limiting for some day-to-day tasks.

Pros
  • Excellent feature-rich application.

  • Really efficient with its ink use.

Cons
  • Very slow at printing both documents and photos.

  • No scanner.

6.5
Small/Home Office

The Epson P700 really isn't suited for office use. Despite it can print exceptionally clear documents, it's extremely slow. It also lacks a scanner, and even if its ink use is excellent for printing photos, it could prove to be expensive to maintain for regular documents.

Pros
  • Excellent feature-rich application.

  • Produces very high-quality documents.

Cons
  • Very slow at printing both documents and photos.

  • No scanner.

7.8
Student

The Epson P700 excels as a dedicated photo printer but isn't suitable for everyday use by students. While it delivers outstanding photo quality, it has significant drawbacks for regular document printing: it's extremely slow and lacks a built-in scanner. Also, its ink could prove to be expensive to maintain if you need to print regular documents frequently. If you need a versatile printer for daily document tasks and scanning, you'll want to consider other options.

Pros
  • Excellent feature-rich application.

  • Produces very high-quality documents.

Cons
  • Very slow at printing both documents and photos.

  • No scanner.

3.5
Black & White

The Epson P700 is bad for black-and-white printing. Although the print quality is outstanding, its print speed is extremely slow at only one page per minute.

Pros
  • Produces very high-quality documents.

Cons
  • Very slow at printing both documents and photos.

9.2
Photo

The Epson SureColor P700 is outstanding as a dedicated photo printer. It produces very detailed pictures with exemplary color rendition. Its color gamut is among the widest we've seen, and it's accurate enough for professional work. It also supports a variety of print sizes, including roll paper and sheet media up to 1.5 mm thick. Even if the 10 cartridges are relatively expensive for their capacity, this printer is very efficient with its ink use, so you won't need to swap them as often.

Pros
  • Excellent color accuracy.

  • Very wide color range.

  • Supports a wide-variety of paper formats, including roll-paper.

Cons
  • No external storage support.

9.0
Color Quality

The color quality on the Epson P700 is superb. It has a remarkably wide color range with bright, saturated colors. Only a little grain can be noticed in the color transitions. The color accuracy is also amazing, with natural skin tones and very minor inaccuracies that are barely noticeable to the naked eye.

Pros
  • Excellent color accuracy.

  • Very wide color range.

Cons

2.9
Speed

Like many other dedicated photo printers, the Epson SureColor P700 is extremely slow. It prints only one black-and-white and two color documents per minute, and it's also very slow at photo printing, which is the printer's main use.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Very slow at printing both documents and photos.

9.5
Recurring Costs

The Epson SureColor P700 is very efficient with its ink usage. Even though its cartridges are relatively expensive for their capacity, they will last for many prints. That said, the setup process uses up the majority of the included cartridges, so you should be ready with replacement ones. The P900 variant's cartridges have a much higher capacity, which would make it worthwhile for people with very frequent printing needs.

Pros
  • Really efficient with its ink use.

Cons
  • Set-up process uses up most of the included cartridges.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

We tested the Epson SureColor P700 printer. It also comes in the P900 variant, which is bigger and can accommodate wider 17" prints compared to the P700's 13" maximum. Although they perform similarly, the P900 doesn't use the same cartridges. Its cartridges have a larger capacity. Also, while the P700 includes roll-paper support, the P900 requires an adapter that's sold separately. Here's a table with the main differences:

    Model Max Print
    Width Capacity
    Cartridge Name
    and Capacity
    Roll Paper
    Support
    Epson SureColor P700 13" Epson 770, T46S in Europe (25 ml) Yes, Built-in
Epson SureColor P900 17" Epson T46Y, T47A in Europe (50 ml) Requires an optional accessory

Here's the label of the model we tested.

    Popular Printer Comparisons

The Epson SureColor P700 is one of the best photo printers we've ever tested. It stands out thanks to its remarkable print quality. It has one of the widest color gamuts we've ever seen and produces very detailed, color-accurate photos. It's also very efficient with its ink use, even if its ink cartridges are relatively expensive. It supports a variety of print sizes up to 1.5 mm thick and includes a practical roll-paper compartment as well. That said, while it's an excellent photo printer, it falls short when it comes to versatility. It's extremely slow, isn't suited to document printing, and doesn't feature a scanner. In many ways, it's similar to many Canon photo printers like the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 and the Canon PIXMA PRO-200, but models like Epson's own EcoTank Photo ET-8550 deliver similar performance that would be good enough for most, while including a scanner and being cheaper to maintain supertank ink.

For more options, check out our recommendations for the best photo printers, the best iPhone photo printers, and the best inkjet printers.

    Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550

The Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 and the Epson SureColor P700 are both excellent photo printers, but they serve different purposes. The P700 offers better overall photo quality, with more accurate colors out of the box and a slightly wider color gamut. It also uses pigment ink, which typically lasts longer and is more resistant to smudges. However, it's a print-only device designed specifically for photo printing. In contrast, the ET-8550 is far more versatile: it includes a competent scanner, prints much faster, and has significantly lower ink costs thanks to its supertank system. Unless you are aiming to get the very best photo quality printing, the ET-8550 is likely to be a better choice.

    Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310

The Epson SureColor P700 and the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 are very comparable dedicated photo printers. They both deliver excellent, detailed prints. While the Canon delivers slightly better color accuracy, the Epson edges it out slightly when it comes to color gamut. That said, the differences are very subtle, and both printers deliver outstanding color reproduction. The Canon also feels more solidly built. The P700, on the other hand, does benefit from the inclusion of roll paper support, a better interactive display, and it's more frugal with its ink use.

    Canon PIXMA PRO-200

The Epson SureColor P700 and Canon PIXMA PRO-200 are both excellent choices for professional photo printing, offering wide media compatibility and advanced cartridge systems with dedicated photo inks that produce rich, accurate colors and broad color gamuts. Where they differ most is in their ink technology. The PRO-200 relies on dye-based ink, which excels on glossy paper, making it especially well-suited for traditional photo prints. The P700, on the other hand, uses pigment-based ink, which performs better on matte and fine art papers. This makes it ideal for archival or artistic print, since pigment ink also tends to last longer than dye ink.

    Canon PIXMA PRO-200S

The Canon PIXMA PRO-200S and the Epson SureColor P700 are excellent photo printers. The Epson is more color accurate out of the box, while the Canon tends to favor a more contrasty look that isn't as realistic, especially when it comes to darker skin tones. The Canon's cartridges are also cheaper, but they don't yield as many prints. The Epson uses pigment ink, which tends to last longer and be less sensitive to smudging. That said, dye ink does tend to produce deeper blacks and slightly more saturated colors.

The Epson SureColor P700's build quality is great. The plastic feels sturdy overall, except for the lid, which is a little on the flimsy side. The lid is also relatively difficult to lock open when needing to change the cartridges. On the other hand, the input and output trays feel very solid, and the ink cartridges are easy to access and swap. Paper jam access is somewhat tight from both the cartridge bay and the access door at the back of the printer. The printer is pretty compact when you close or fold the input and output trays, and the power cord is removable, making it easy to replace if damaged.

This printer requires little upkeep, but like other inkjet models, it’s prone to printhead clogging if left idle for too long. Fortunately, it offers several built-in maintenance tools to address such issues, including nozzle checks, various levels of cleaning, and alignment features. You can also monitor the maintenance box, which collects excess ink during cleanings. The cartridge compartment is easily accessible by lifting the top cover while the printer is on. The overall cartridge yield is excellent, so refills won't be frequent unless you're printing heavily.

We did encounter clogging during our testing. During the yielding process, the printer was left on standby over the weekend, and it was clogged when we came back. After four printhead cleans, the cyan was still clogged, and we had to do a full deep clean to resolve the issue. While clogging is usual for inkjet printers, this process used about 1/6 of our cartridges.

This printer also uses quite a lot of ink during the priming process. Once the setup is done, you will be left with around 25% of your cartridges still filled. Epson does specify in its quick start guide that you will be left with relatively low levels of ink and that you should be prepared with replacement cartridges. The installed maintenance box will also fill up almost entirely in this process, as it'll be used to collect the shipping fluids. That said, Epson includes a supplementary maintenance box, which shouldn't fill up as quickly as it's only used to store excess ink.

The display on this printer is superb. It has great viewing angles, and you can tilt it to accommodate different positions. The touch-screen interface is responsive and well laid out. Large, clear icons and an intuitive menu system make it easy to navigate. When in use, the printer communicates useful information such as progress, time remaining for a print job, and the maximum number of sheets you can load.

The Epson SureColor P700 uses 10 individual 25 mL UltraChrome PRO10 pigment ink cartridges, including cyan, light cyan, vivid magenta, vivid light magenta, yellow, gray, light gray, violet, photo black, and matte black. Unlike its predecessor, the Epson SureColor P600, this model assigns each cartridge to its own dedicated channel, so you don't need to switch between photo black and matte black inks depending on the media type. You can easily monitor ink levels on the printer's built-in display or through the app or software installed on your device. On the computer, the Epson Status Monitor displays the ink levels and pops up a warning when an ink color starts to be low.

The new system uses light gray ink in a similar way to how the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 uses Chroma Optimizer. It helps reduce bronzing, an artifact that makes some colors look metallic from certain angles. It also improves uniformity and enhances the richness of black tones.

Because of the printer's unusual cartridge setup, we didn't run our standard yield tests. Our current testing method focuses on printers with a conventional CMYK setup, which involves printing 80% coverage patterns of each color and using ISO-IEC references to estimate yield. Read a more detailed description of our testing process. In this case, the P700's complex ink system makes it nearly impossible to tell whether it's using one color or blending several to produce the exact shades of cyan, magenta, and yellow required for our test. You can find more details on estimated photo yields in the Cost-per-print section.

Color Ink Needed For Black & White
    Yes

Although it's not designed for this purpose, the print quality of black-and-white documents is superb and among the best you can expect from an inkjet printer. The printer renders text and small details sharply, and it reproduces fine elements, like the background of the bar chart and the small white text under the frequency chart, with impressive clarity, even though those elements are typically very difficult to print accurately.

    9.5

As explained in the Cartridge section, we couldn't run our full yield test suite because of the particular cartridge setup in this printer. Therefore, our results only show the cost of operation of photo printing, which is the expected use for this printer. While this means you can't simply compare this printer's score with others, the results are more representative of what you can expect when printing photos, which is this printer's intended use. To estimate this printer's efficiency, we ran the photo printing task by printing this test image on 4" x 6" photo paper, with default print settings, and only adjusted the paper type to Epson Glossy photo paper and the size.

We ran the test with all full cartridges until the printer couldn't print anymore, and noted the results. In this case, the light gray cartridge was the first one to get emptied, while the other cartridges were about half-full. This will definitely vary if you choose to use matte paper instead. In that case, the printer won't use nearly as much light gray, as it won't need to coat the photograph. We then monitored ink levels and extrapolated the results to get our average ink use for photo printing. This screenshot gives you an idea of the ink levels close to the end of this test.

All this considered, the Epson SureColor P700's cost-per-print is excellent. Even if the cartridges are relatively expensive for their capacity, the printer's Piezo printheads and pressurized bladder make for very efficient ink use. The Epson 770 cartridges are also sold individually, which will allow you to only buy the cartridges you need and save money on the cartridges you don't use as often.

For people who print in large quantities, investing in the larger Epson SureColor P900 variant may be worthwhile. It delivers the same outstanding efficiency, but its T46Y cartridges contain twice as much ink and are only around 15% to 20% more expensive.
