The Topo Aura 2 is a moderate stability trainer with a low drop and an anatomical toe box, designed for runners who want a very trustworthy shoe for relaxed mileage, walking, and long days on their feet. Its firm platform is impressively stable, giving you a secure ride that rolls you through your stride decently and provides a good amount of shock absorption, especially for forefoot strikers. It’s a good choice for daily training and a satisfactory long-run companion. However, its substantial weight and lack of rebound make it a sub-par pick for short-distance racing, and the ride isn't lively or bouncy.

  • You want a light, lively shoe for faster running.
  • You're looking for a soft, bouncy ride.

Our Verdict

6.0
Half/Full Marathon Racing

The Topo Aura 2 is an acceptable option for a marathon if your goal is to finish rather than race. Its impressively stable platform remains very trustworthy as fatigue builds, while the cushioning does an adequate job of protecting your legs over the distance. It also rolls through the stride decently, especially for such a heavy shoe. However, there's very little rebound, so maintaining pace takes more effort, and there's no escaping its heft, which makes the shoe harder to turn over as the miles build.

Pros
  • Very stable platform is easy to trust when fatigued.

  • Absorbs shock adequately over the distance.

Cons
  • Heavy build is cumbersome as miles build.

  • Lack of rebound makes sustaining pace tiring.

5.7
5K/10K Racing

The Topo Aura 2 is a sub-par pick for short-distance racing. Though its firm forefoot gives you a secure base when pushing off and provides some leverage, the shoe is far too heavy to turn over quickly. The lack of rebound makes it hard to hold a faster pace, and the unremarkable amount of snap means the shoe isn’t propulsive enough to compete with dedicated short-distance racers.

Pros
  • Firm forefoot provides a secure base when pushing off.

Cons
  • Heavy build makes quick turnover difficult.

  • Lack of rebound makes faster paces hard to sustain.

  • Unremarkable snap limits propulsion at speed.

7.0
Long Run

The Topo Aura 2 is a decent long-run shoe for relaxed efforts. Its firm, stable platform keeps the ride secure over extended efforts, and the cushioning does a fair job of protecting your legs from impact. Its forefoot rocker and relatively stiff rocker help guide you forward through the stride, keeping relaxed running comfortable. However, its substantial weight becomes increasingly cumbersome as the miles build, and the lack of rebound makes progressive efforts much harder to sustain.

Pros
  • Very stable platform keeps relaxed long runs controlled.

  • Absorbs shock adequately on extended efforts.

Cons
  • Heavy build is cumbersome as miles build.

  • Lack of rebound makes faster segments very inefficient.

7.5
Daily Training

The Topo Aura 2 is a good daily trainer for relaxed mileage. Its impressively stable platform gives you a very secure ride and offers good impact protection. It also does a decent job of rolling you through the stride overall. Despite its substantial weight, easy miles still feel secure and predictable. That said, there's very little rebound, and the heavy build makes the shoe hard to move when you want to run faster.

Pros
  • Impressively stable platform keeps easy miles secure.

  • Good impact protection for routine mileage.

  • Rolls decently through the stride.

Cons
  • Heavy build and lack of rebound limit faster running.

    How We Test Running Shoes
    How We Test Running Shoes

We've bought and tested more than 250 running shoes. Every pair purchased with our own money, never supplied or sponsored by brands. Our data-driven tests are designed to go beyond marketing claims, and since every shoe goes through the exact same methodology, you can directly compare results to find the right pair for your needs.

    Test Results

    1.5

    Energy Return

The Topo Aura 2 has awful energy return. No matter where you land, the midsole gives very little back, leaving the ride flat and dull rather than lively. That isn’t really what the shoe is built for, though; it prioritizes stability and impact protection for relaxed running over rebound or speed.

    Pros
    Cons
    • Forefoot rebound is terrible, making toe-off feel flat.

    • Heel rebound is even worse, so landings get minimal spring.

    1.7
    Forefoot Compression Energy Return

The forefoot of the Topo Aura 2 also has terrible energy return. Very little of the energy put into the midsole comes back at toe-off, so the ride feels flat rather than lively.

    1.0
    Heel Compression Energy Return

The heel of the Topo Aura 2 has terrible energy return, giving you little rebound on landing. It returns significantly less energy than livelier stability shoes like the Saucony Hurricane 26.

    8.2

    Stability

The Topo Aura 2 is impressively stable. Its very firm platform keeps the shoe secure under both the heel and forefoot, while the broad outsole gives you plenty of support through the middle of the stride. It also uses a medial post for added guidance, helping keep the ride controlled.

    Pros
    • Firm heel keeps rearfoot landings very secure.

    • Broad outsole gives the shoe a very trustworthy platform.

    • Firm forefoot provides a stable base when pushing off.

    • Medial post adds extra guidance through the heel and midfoot.

    Cons
    External Shape
    8.8
    Heel Firmness

The heel is very firm, which keeps rearfoot landings secure but can make the ride a bit harsh.

    8.5
    Forefoot Firmness

The forefoot is very firm, giving you a secure base at toe-off but making push-off a bit harsh.

    Other Features

The Topo Aura 2 uses a non-gusseted tongue and has no plate. Despite the tongue not being attached at the sides, lockdown remained secure during testing thanks to its other stability features.

    7.5

    Cushioning

The Topo Aura 2 has good cushioning overall. The forefoot is the standout at a lighter load, absorbing an excellent amount of impact and still providing very good protection at moderate forces. However, it doesn't scale as well under the highest loads, so heavier runners going quickly get a less protective experience. The heel isn't as cushioned as the forefoot, but it still provides decent impact protection overall. The shoe also holds up adequately over the course of a marathon.

    Pros
    • Forefoot provides excellent impact protection at lighter loads.

    • Heel provides decent impact protection overall.

    • Protection holds up adequately over marathon distance.

    Cons
    • Forefoot is less protective for heavier runners going very fast.

    7.3
    Heel Cushioning

The heel provides decent cushioning overall. It absorbs enough impact to keep heel landings reasonably protected, though it isn’t as cushioned as the forefoot.

    7.7
    Forefoot Cushioning

The forefoot provides good cushioning overall, but the protection doesn’t scale evenly as more force is applied. It absorbs an excellent amount of impact at lighter loads and remains very good at moderate forces, before dropping off for heavier runners moving quickly.

    6.7
    Forefoot Long Run Cushioning

The Topo Aura 2 holds up adequately over longer runs, but forefoot protection drops off noticeably as the miles build. It still absorbs a reasonable amount of impact late in the run, though it doesn’t retain as much protection over distance as support shoes like the ASICS GEL-KAYANO 33.

    3.8

    Bounciness

The Topo Aura 2 has poor bounciness. Neither the heel nor the forefoot compresses deeply enough to create much spring, and the awful energy return means very little of what the midsole does compress comes back to you.

    Pros
    Cons
    • Heel has very little spring on landing.

    • Forefoot lacks the compression and rebound needed for a bouncy toe-off.

    5.1
    Heel Compression Depth

The heel compresses poorly under load, so there isn’t much squish to generate spring on landing.

    5.7
    Forefoot Compression Depth

The forefoot has sub-par compression depth, limiting the amount of spring and bounce you get through toe-off.

    6.5

    Snappiness

The Topo Aura 2 has adequate snap. It takes a lot of force to bend the forefoot, giving you useful leverage when pushing off. However, the shoe returns little of the energy stored as it bends when it unbends, so that leverage doesn't translate into much snap. The forefoot rocker provides some help moving you through toe-off, but not enough to make the transition particularly quick.

    Pros
    • Good leverage at toe-off.

    Cons
    • Poor bending energy return limits snap at toe-off.

    • Forefoot rocker doesn’t make toe-off especially quick.

    4.6
    Forefoot Bending Energy Return

The forefoot has poor bending energy return, so little of the energy stored as the shoe bends comes back when it unbends. This fits the Aura 2’s character of prioritizing a stable ride over a lively one, much like the Brooks Glycerin GTS 23.

    7.3
    Forefoot Bending Stiffness

The forefoot takes a good amount of force to bend, providing useful leverage at toe-off. However, it isn’t rigid enough to deliver much snap.

    7.2
    Forefoot Rocker Geometry

Despite its shallow angle, the forefoot still does an adequate job of helping your foot roll forward through push-off.

    7.1

    Roll

The Topo Aura 2 rolls decently through the stride. Its rocker resists flattening enough to provide some guidance, while the forefoot shape helps move you forward through push-off, though it doesn't make the transition especially quick. The firm forefoot also takes a good amount of force to bend, providing leverage at toe-off. However, the sub-par heel rocker gives rearfoot strikers little help transitioning into midstance.

    Pros
    • Forefoot provides good leverage through push-off.

    • Rocker provides some guidance through the stride.

    Cons
    • Forefoot rocker doesn’t move you through toe-off quickly.

    • Heel rocker gives rearfoot strikers little help transitioning into midstance.

    6.7
    Rocker Stiffness

The rocker takes enough force to flatten to provide some assistance through the stride.

    Stack Heights

The Topo Aura 2 has a moderate stack with a low drop, leaving plenty of foam beneath the forefoot rather than concentrating most of the height at the heel.

    5.6
    Heel Rocker Geometry

The heel does a sub-par job of rolling rearfoot strikers into midstance, so heel landings get very little help moving forward into the rest of the stride.

    9.1

    True To Size

The Topo Aura 2 fits true to size overall. The length is bang-on, with a roomy arch that should accommodate most runners comfortably. There’s also plenty of clearance above the toes, and the anatomical toe box gives your toes room to splay. You can confidently go with your usual size, and wide sizing is available if you need extra room.

    Pros
    • Length is bang-on.

    • Roomy arch accommodates most feet.

    • Plenty of clearance above the toes.

    • Wide sizing is available for runners who need more room.

    Cons
    10
    Length Fit
    7.4
    Forefoot Fit: Width

The forefoot is wider than our reference fit because of its anatomical shape, allowing the toes to splay.

    9.9
    Arch Fit: Width

    Wet & Warm Weather

The Topo Aura 2’s upper environment isn’t bad, but it’s not great. Though it does a good job of limiting how much water it absorbs, it’s already a heavy shoe, so the extra weight makes it feel even heavier when soaked. Its breathability is unremarkable too, so your feet can get warm on hot days, longer runs, or when wearing thicker socks. It also takes well over a day to dry completely, so if you need to use it again the next day after a wet run, it’ll likely still be damp.

    Pros
    • Does a good job of limiting water absorption.

    Cons
    • Already-heavy build becomes even more cumbersome when soaked.

    • Takes well over a day to dry completely.

    • Feet can get warm on hot days or longer runs.

    6.0
    Breathability

The Topo Aura 2 has passable breathability overall. Most of the airflow comes through the toe box, but on very hot days, longer runs, or when wearing thicker socks, your feet will get very warm.

    4.6
    Time-To-Dry

The Topo Aura 2 takes well over a day to dry completely. If it gets soaked, it'll likely still be damp the following day. We recommend placing it in front of a fan or using a shoe dryer to help speed things up.

    7.7
    Water Absorption

The Topo Aura 2 does a good job of limiting how much water it absorbs, but it starts out as a very heavy shoe. Once soaked, the added water makes it noticeably heavier, so wet runs make an already hefty shoe even more cumbersome.

    Additional Tests
    4.2
    Design Weight

There's no escaping that the Topo Aura 2 is a heavy shoe. It weighs more than traditional support shoes like the ASICS GEL-KAYANO 33 and is significantly heavier than more modern stability trainers like the Saucony Hurricane 26.

    Design Internal Shape
    Design Foam

The Topo Aura 2 uses a blend of EVA and TPU in its midsole. In this shoe, the result is a firm platform with good impact protection but very little rebound, prioritizing stability and protection over a lively ride.

    Design Laces

The Topo Aura 2 uses standard flat laces with moderate stretch. They kept lockdown secure during our testing without causing lace bite or needing to be retied during runs.

    Popular Running Shoe Comparisons

The Topo Aura 2 occupies a fairly unusual spot among stability shoes, pairing a low drop with an anatomical toe box and a very secure ride. Despite sharing a similar silhouette, it's nothing like the performance-driven Topo Specter 3, sitting much closer to the Altra Paradigm 8 in purpose. The Paradigm is the closest alternative if you want that same foot-shaped fit with an even lower drop. It’s cheaper and slightly more stable, but the Aura 2 provides much better impact protection and versatility. If you don't specifically need such a low drop or an anatomical toe box, the Saucony Hurricane 26 is the more versatile option of the three: it's significantly lighter, much livelier, and more cushioned, though it's less stable. Get the Paradigm if you want the lowest-drop option, the Aura 2 if you prioritize stability and protection in a low-drop package, or the Hurricane if you want a more energetic stability shoe for a wider range of running.

    Topo Phantom 4

The Topo Phantom 4 and Topo Aura 2 are both impressively stable low-drop shoes with anatomical toe boxes, but the Aura 2 is the more aggressive support option. It’s much heavier and a bit more expensive, though it is slightly more stable and more deeply cushioned. The Phantom 4 is significantly lighter and a bit more versatile, making it better suited to faster running. Get the Aura 2 if you need the most support and don’t mind paying extra; get the Phantom 4 if you’re a neutral runner who still wants plenty of stability.

    Altra Paradigm 8

The Topo Aura 2 is a better running shoe than the Altra Paradigm 8 for most runners. Though the Altra is cheaper, lighter, and slightly more stable, the Aura 2 provides much better impact protection and is more versatile overall. That said, the Paradigm is practically zero-drop, so it’s the shoe to get if you specifically want the lowest-drop stability option. If you want better protection without giving up the foot-shaped fit, low drop, and secure ride, get the Topo.

    Topo Specter 3

The Topo Specter 3 and Topo Aura 2 share an anatomical toe box, but they’re built for very different runners. The Specter 3 is significantly lighter, much more energetic, and far better suited to faster running and marathon racing. The Aura 2 is much more stable and better suited to relaxed mileage, walking, and runners who prioritize a secure ride. Get the Specter 3 if you want the performance-focused Topo; get the Aura 2 if stability and dependability matter more.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

We bought and tested the Topo Aura 2 in a men's U.S. size 9, as indicated on our pair's label. We purchased the Charcoal/Green colorway, though multiple colorways are available depending on your region. The shoe comes in regular and wide sizing for both men and women. The design section applies to the exact model we tested, though we expect other sizes to perform similarly.
